Roissy posted a blog about a Kazakhstan study on women of the world. No BS, no PC nonsense, just a view from the far corner of Asia. Reminds me a bit about last night. I was disgusted about the social conditioning of women in America and plan a blog on it.

In the meantime here is the Roissy link:

Wow, a whole lot of stuff in the linked study. I’m not sure how to approach it.

I’ll just say, the part about American women really isn’t far off, at times I feel that European women have been raised better. But IMO, it isn’t an issue of American _ **women** _, it’s an issue of **Americans**..I agree, embarrassing.

Well, I think the question should still stand. It’s not every day you get to ask someone their perspective from the USA, either. 🙂

Heck, when I traveled around the US, Canada and Mexico, I couldn’t find the same culture anywhere. There are connecting themes, but there’s more difference than I used to think.

I’m not many miles now from where I grew up in Orange County, but even the cultural difference between LA and OC is huge. The way women act couldn’t be more different. The way ANYBODY acts couldn’t be more different. They act as LOCAL COUNTERPOINT to each other, the closeness of one driving the other to “rebel”, in a sense. To differentiate.

There seems to be these “cultural bubbles” everywhere. Some bubbles are nicer than others for _some_ people. Usually not all. I’ve yet to run into any place that’s equally nice for both men and women, and from all age ranges from infants to seniors. Seems like some group loses out somewhere.

There’s local weather which affects the psychology of an area. Studies show harsher weather seems to build who thrive better, in general. (this bit of research bums me out, since I like the sun)

The role of “place”, physical & cultural differences, is something I’ve been researching to help build locate our next office. We want an actual R&D campus of some sort, just like a baby Intel or Apple. Beyond where to find & house the best researchers, this might effect sex relations, too. It’d be interesting to see under what type of cultures and even weather normal human relationships work best under.

These books are pretty cool bits of research into the roles of place, and local and national cultures:

Richard Florida’s book covers the US. Steve supposedly lives in one of the happiest, most social parts of the US. I, on the other hand, live in one of the grumpies, “selfish” and least conscientious parts of an otherwise middle of the road state. (look at those bubbles!)

Eric Weiner’s book, The Geography of Bliss, covers the entire planet. It’s a funny book. Or least it’s funny when you let the author read it to you as an audiobook (that’s how I “read it”.)

The question does still stand, but at least now he knows what culture she is really trying to describe. I was just clearing it up.

Jasmin, that’s very true. There are large cultural differences between Northern and Southern California. Something that I have noticed since day one of moving here.

Although, you couldn’t pin it to any specific set of behaviors, in the end it all comes down to vibe. People from different places vibe differently.

I seem to get along with people from San Diego the most, out of all the locales around here. Just last night, someone said that she didn’t think I was from the Bay because I was too ‘laid back and relaxed’. Maybe that meant she thought I was a sun and surf kinda guy from the beach?

Interesting idea, thanks for bringing it up.

You are absolutely right, but the study was done on women and that is why it does not include men. I am certain if one were to be done on men, it would be even more embarrassing. :o

SoCal vs. NoCal?

Heck, there’s a large difference between San Diego, OC and LA. They’re all _quite_ different. I think the main thing is that SoCal has more sun than NorCal, and there are a greater % of book-read type people in NorCal in general. Otherwise, I think you should consider SD, OC and LA separately.

I’m guessing that some guys will get along better with women in one of these 3 areas more than another. If they don’t get along with LA girls, they might just hit it off with an OC girl or an SD girl. Different areas, different girls.

I haven’t been there as much as I like, but I like the north, beach parts of SD the best out of any area here. They’re nice people, “sunny” personalities, but there’s still smart people. Lots of engineers and scientists. That’s a nice combination.

I also like the people in San Francisco quite a bit, when there’s a “warm referral”. People there are very hospitable to guests and friends of friends. There’s also smart people _galore_. Plenty of great people to chat with, to hire, whatever…

It’s a really filthy city, though, esp for the money they want. I don’t like that one bit, which is why I resist expanding there. I might like other parts of the bay better, but I don’t get up there enough to do enough exploring.

> [@](#):
>
> Although, you couldn’t pin it to any specific set of behaviors, in the end it all comes down to vibe. People from different places vibe differently.

Yep, vibes. Vibes and cultural memes. Local memes. Traditions. Whatever you want to call them.

There’s definitely a “mind set” of each area you get with _both_ (personal & societal) cost _and_ obligation when you live in certain place. 🙂

It may be one of the few major places in California, where something that resembles the California dream still exists.

It’s not an accessible dream for everyone, though. Not everyone can afford to live near the beachy areas there. (although they’re a LOT cheaper than in LA)

I’m used to putting most of my money towards rent, so it might not be impossible to me (I’d have to check current pricing, actually).. but if I was to put someone like Steve out there, I think he’d be shocked at how much of your income goes to your tiny apartment or house, compared to a place like TN.

The actual experience must be kind of settling, kinda like when I first saw a $15 or $20 hamburger on a menu. And it’s just a hamburger!! _shock & horror!_

Anyway, yeah… differences everywhere…

Even here in the US, there’s going to be “cultural bubbles” of women that you’ll like far more than women from another cultural bubble. Even bordering towns have this effect. One town over, women are conservative and prissy. Next town over, women are more joyful and fun. Some bubbles are smaller than others.

I can say that if Jasmin is recommending a book it has to be a good one!
She sends me about 3 books every week and never once has I been disappointed.

I posted this here, because I wanted to get the minds of the forum thinking about other cultures and how they think about the States. In that respect its good to get outside your bubble, its a part of being socially aware. If you are unable to see the parallels here on how what other people think, I would be happy to discuss it with anyone, just feel free to call me.

From a personal ecology standpoint, it has been said that it is not healthy to care about what others think of you, but I disagree to some point. You should never care to the point it breaks your confidence down, but still take that information and learn so that you can make improvements. Don’t be the person with their head in the sand. Live and learn.

How much of this do you think is caused by the way Americans are represented in the media?

Personally, I hardly watch any TV and get most of my impressions of Americans from forums, tourists and people I have met from forums. However, I know some people who watch a lot of TV and it has shaped their idea of your countrymen a lot. We get a lot of American movies, but also talk shows and documentaries and rap videos, there is a lot of bad stuff among that that does give you guys a bad reputation.

There are a lot of rednecks, gangstas and dumbasses in the media. Some people think Americans are mostly fat, foulmouthed and a bit slow mentally, very emotional with low restraint and prone to violent and sexual impulses. Small wonder if you watch rap videos, Jerry Springer and Roseanne.

I must say I have met a number of clever, disciplined Americans online, women who are charming and graceful, women who are loud and engaging, men who are responsible and respectful, men who are chubby and funny, men who are fit and stoic and everything in between. In the end it is all about the person who happened to grow up in that culture and what he or she decided to take from it and what to discard. The best people are not the stereotype of any culture.

LOL\* Yeah man, I know Borat is a character in a movie… The subtle point I was attempting to make was as interesting as it may be to know what people from Kazakhstan think of women from the rest of the world, I was just citing an example of how the western world perceves Kazakhstan.

Interesting point, so are you trying to say that since there are so many different offshoots of American culture it would be difficult for a foreigner, or possibly anyone to truly make a broad generalization about American women?

I know from my personal experiences that the view of American women portrayed in that study is not necessarily true. I mean yes there are some who fit those stereotypes to a T, but most in my mind are nothing like how they describe American women to be.

Unfortunately, yes, there really _are_ a lot of rednecks, gangstas and dumbasses in America who are mentally slow with little restraint.

There are also nice, smart, well-balanced people, too, but yeah, the lowest common denominator has slowly been taking over the culture here.
