I think what everyone has told you so far is very important. The guy may well have been reacting to the 'none. Not necesarily uncommon. The girls may have been also. You said they were young - a certain amount of standoffishness in the face of 'none is not uncommon with young women who are just figuring themselves out - especially in the romance/sexual realm. They instinctively understand what the 'none means and may feel themselves reacting to it - but they are not necessarily comfortable with the 'none message or their own reactions - so they are interested but cautious.
