In a number of recent posts, for example [this one](https://pheromonetalk.com/t/agricultural-specialisterne-rural-employment-revolution-for-those-with-autism/50615/379), I have mentioned the California-based nonprofit, _Heart of Sailing Foundation_.

_Wines for Autism_ is a sponsor of _Heart of Sailing_. Started by Christine Roffi, the goal of _Wines for Autism_ is to promote awareness that there is hope for children suffering from Autism and to help fund non-profit organisations that aid the families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders…

In [an earlier post](https://pheromonetalk.com/t/specialisterne-leveraging-the-unique-skills-of-autistics-at-competitive-market-terms/50245/259), I mentioned _Cellar Angels_, a web-based wine marketing company which partners with marquee California wineries to raise funds for various charities across the United States.

In [my post from yesterday](https://pheromonetalk.com/t/agricultural-specialisterne-rural-employment-revolution-for-those-with-autism/50615/381), I mentioned _Wines for Autism_. _Wines for Autism_ was started in 2009 by stay-at-home mom, Christine Roffi, who is directly affected by Autism. The goal of _Wines for Autism_ is to promote awareness that there is hope for children suffering from an Autism Spectrum Disorder and to help fund non-profit organisations that aid the families affected by Autism…

> [@](#):
>
> …Q: Why did you start Wines for Autism?
>
> A: Before my son was diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder a few weeks shy of his fourth birthday, I was working as a freelance translator and helping my husband with his wine business. Helping my son recover from his initial diagnosis became my full time job and forced me to stop everything else I was doing. As he improved significantly thanks to biomedical interventions I had a little more time on my hands.
>
> I felt an obligation to give back to my community for getting my son back.
>
> Using my background as an advantage, I started Wines for Autism from home on a zero dollar budget less than two months ago.
>
> …I have made it my mission to spread awareness of the effectiveness of biomedical interventions while supporting charities that share my beliefs and have been helping families like ours. Wines for Autism, Inc. gives one-third of its gross profits from all sales to our autism non-profit organisations…

In a [recent post](https://pheromonetalk.com/t/agricultural-specialisterne-rural-employment-revolution-for-those-with-autism/50615/368), I mentioned _Autism Family Services of New Jersey_ (_AFSNJ_). In New Jersey, according to a 2012 report from the _Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)_ , 1 in every 49 people have an Autism diagnosis compared to America’s national average of 1 in 88 people. _AFSNJ_ is a leading provider of family support services to the Autism population under contract with the New Jersey State _Division of Developmental Disabilities_ (_DDD_). Lunch will be provided by Whole Foods of Middletown and the Belmar First Aid Squad for all registered families…

The subject of [yesterday’s post](https://pheromonetalk.com/t/agricultural-specialisterne-rural-employment-revolution-for-those-with-autism/50615/383) was _Autism Family Services of New Jersey_ (_AFSNJ_). The Trenton, New Jersey-based nonprofit is a leading provider of family support services to the Autism population under contract with the New Jersey State _Division of Developmental Disabilities_ (_DDD_). _AFSNJ_ holds another annual event–the Seaside Soiree features a beautiful evening on the beach with a reggae band, silent auction and lobster dinner to entertain and please the crowd of community supporters. In a [recent post](https://pheromonetalk.com/t/agricultural-specialisterne-rural-employment-revolution-for-those-with-autism/50615/368), I mentioned the _Virginia Autism Project (VAP)_. The _VAP_’s President is Teresa Champion, who became an activist in the Autism community after her son received a diagnosis of Autism in 1996…

> [@](#):
>
> Since I was a young boy, I’ve always looked up to my big sister Teresa.
>
> …But when James was about 1 [and a half] years old, my sister noticed a sudden change.
>
> “He would just stare. And there would be no response,” Teresa Champion told “Good Morning America.” “And he stopped responding to his name. It’s like somebody flicked the light switch.”’
>
> She sometimes felt as through James’ condition was her fault.
>
> “I was, like, I should’ve spent more time working with him, one-on-one, I should’ve played with him, like I did Sydney. You know, I mean, I should’ve, I should’ve, I should’ve, yeah,” she said.
>
> Like any mother, she carried that guilt through numerous trips to the doctors. James was 2 years old when Teresa finally heard the diagnosis that would have crushed any parent.
>
> The doctor said James had moderate to severe autism.
>
> For Teresa, the diagnosis became a challenge.
>
> “I’m like, ‘Oh, OK. Autism. All right, great. Now we know what we’re going to do, right?’” she recalled.
>
> But there is no cure for autism.
>
> …My sister put her legal career on hold to dig for answers.
>
> She was sure if she worked hard enough she would find a cure for her little boy.
>
> Many other mothers of autistic children were also devoting their lives to finding answers.
>
> …But they would all be told the same thing: There is no cure and there are very few treatment ideas or programs for children like James.
>
> Years later, as parents with autistic children began to network for solutions, there would be adapted baseball leagues, swim meets – places where James felt accepted.
>
> …Riding horses connected James to the outside world. It was a connection that Teresa wanted for the other autistic children and their parents.
>
> She helped raise money for the struggling nonprofit program James rides in. Those funds allow others take part in the program, too.
>
> “Her purpose was never just to find something for James, but it was to really encourage the whole community of parents and riders, let’s build a community and network … that’s going to help them move forward,” said Corliss Wallingford, the executive director of Simple Changes.
>
> Putting people together and fundraising may be one of my sister’s best talents. She found strength in a support group when she first heard James’ diagnosis. Now, she runs one out of her own home.
>
> “I found this group about six or seven years ago and it has become a lifeline for me,” June Adelsberger, the mother of an autistic child, said.
>
> Another parent seconded the sentiment.
>
> “We always have to, amongst each other, get the message out there, that they are just a little bit different,” Scott Campbell said.
>
> Patty Ratliffe finds understanding.
>
> “Some of the things that our kids do, you don’t necessarily want to go to the other neighborhood moms because they can’t relate,” she said…

The subject of [yesterday’s post](https://pheromonetalk.com/t/agricultural-specialisterne-rural-employment-revolution-for-those-with-autism/50615/385) was the _Virginia Autism Project_, a non-profit that focuses on educating, advising and collaborating with federal, state and local decision makers and the general public on issues that impact individuals with Autism and their communities, while raising awareness throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. The organisation’s priority is to create positive change for people on the Autism Spectrum through Autism Insurance Reform in Virginia…

> [@](#):
>
> …The Virginia Autism Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to the betterment of autistic individuals, has been persistent with pushing legislation protecting families with autistic children. This year, they heavily supported [Senate Bill] 1062. In a release, Pat DiBari, president of the organization, stressed his desire for Virginia to catch up to other states when it comes to autism insurance reform.
>
> “For years, families of children with autism have been caught in an endless struggle with insurance companies for coverage of autism treatments and therapies,” DiBari said.
>
> “The state of Virginia has not been keeping up with other states on this front,” DiBari said, “We hope the legislature will reform insurance laws this year to require coverage for children with a diagnosis of autism like 23 other states have done.”
>
> …“You have to treat these children early,” [Teresa Champion of the _Virginia Autism Project_] said. “If parents can’t afford to do that because medical insurance won’t pay for coverage, the children can’t be treated.”
>
> “What we’re trying to do is save money in the long run,” Champion said…

> [@](#):

> …To date, thousands of parents, teachers, and other service providers have been trained. Law Enforcement Officers and First Responders in every New Jersey county have been trained in autism recognition and response and in at least one case, the training has been life-saving. POAC has reached out to colleges and universities and provided course work to students studying to be special education teachers. All of this is accomplished without government funding, it is all done through the generosity of those who contribute to POAC fundraising activities. Making a difference in the lives of children now is at the heart of everything we do at POAC. For the thousands of children with autism who benefit from our services and programs every year, POAC has become a bastion of support and a beacon of hope.

I based this assumption on his attitude during his first encounter with a horse, which occurred through the graces of a fund-raiser for POAC hosted by Rein Dancer Therapeutic Riding Center , an encounter which ended after ten minutes. I can honestly say Justin’s desire to dismount during that period of time was matched only by my aversion to getting off the couch after 9 PM.

In my last two posts I have focused on _POAC (Parents of Autistic Children)_, a non-profit Autism training and outreach organisation based in Brick Township, New Jersey. _POAC_ is that state’s largest provider of free Autism training and education for parents, teachers, and friends of children and adults on the Autism Spectrum. The nonprofit has held fishing events for Autistic children at ‘L&H Woods and Water’ in Wall Township, New Jersey…

> There are so many opportunities for learning during a outing to the lake, river or ocean to fish. You can prepare your child for what to expect by writing a story about what you’re going to do while fishing or watching a movie about fishing. Summertime is a time to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Just because your child has autism doesn’t mean you need to avoid doing these regular summer activities. The more activities you expose your child to, the more opportunities they will have for learning and social interactions. Take some pictures of your catch of the day so they can share them with friends when they return to school. But most of all, remember to have fun!

In [yesterday’s post](https://pheromonetalk.com/t/agricultural-specialisterne-rural-employment-revolution-for-those-with-autism/50615/389), I mentioned _POAC (Parents of Autistic Children)_ fishing events.

_The Fisherman’s Conservation Association (FCA)_ is another organisation that uses fishing as a force for good. The nonprofit has a ‘Hooked For A Lifetime’ fishing program, teaching Autistic kids as well as children from underserved communities that fishing can be a great way to have fun. Not only does the program teach children where, when and how to fish, but it also sends them home with all the materials and equipment they need to continue enjoying what they were taught and exposed to at the program. Each child who attends a ‘Hooked For A Lifetime’ event receives a rod, reel and tackle box with tackle and ‘How To’ guide. The _FCA_ believes that by getting kids ‘Hooked on Fishing’, they are establishing a generation of future stewards of the resource…

> On September 17, 2011, [New York State Environmental Conservation Officers (ECOs)] Alan Brassard and Matthew Nichols attended the Fisherman’s Conservation Association’s Autistic Children’s “Hooked for a Lifetime” fishing event held at Ocean Breeze pier in Staten Island. The event was an overwhelming success as the (FCA) along with help from the Staten Island Borough President’s office and Mike’s Bait and Tackle Shop, helped approximately 25 children with autism enjoy a fun day of fishing. The ECOs were able to donate $250 dollars from NYCOA (New York State Conservation Officers Association) to the FCA to help support the event and future events. ECOs Brassard and Nichols also fielded questions about current fishing regulations and also informed the attendees about the job duties of an [ECO]. The children enjoyed seeing the “guys in green” at the event…

The subject of [yesterday’s post](https://pheromonetalk.com/t/agricultural-specialisterne-rural-employment-revolution-for-those-with-autism/50615/390) was the _Fisherman’s Conservation Association (FCA)_ ‘Hooked For A Lifetime’ program. The program teaches Autistic kids as well as children from underserved communities that fishing can be a great way to have fun. Not only does the program teach children where, when and how to fish, but it also sends them home with all the materials and equipment they need to continue enjoying what they were taught and exposed to at the program. The _FCA_ believes that by getting kids ‘Hooked on Fishing’, they are establishing a generation of future stewards of the resource.

A recent event that was part of the program was the ‘Grace Foundation Fishing Event’ held on September 15 at Staten Island’s Ocean Breeze Fishing Pier. Children on the Autism Spectrum were treated to a morning of fishing with rods, reels and tackle boxes donated by Michael’s Bait & Tackle Shop, the event sponsor…

> Borough President James P. Molinaro’s office on Saturday will host “Kids Fishing Day” for autistic children at the Ocean Breeze Fishing Pier.
> The event will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. The pier is located at Capodanno Boulevard and Seaview Avenue.
> Children from the Grace Foundation, Eden II and On Your Mark will receive one-on-one instruction from volunteers from several Island fishing clubs.
> A small area at the end of the pier will be closed to visitors temporarily to allow the children to have fun trying their hand at fishing.
> Each child will receive a fishing pole and tackle box, which they will be able to keep at the conclusion of the event. Molinaro will also present each child with a T-shirt and certificate of appreciation for their participation.
> It is the 10th year in a row that Molinaro’s office has hosted the event.

The last two posts have mentioned the _GRACE Foundation of New York_. Another Autism-focused nonprofit organisation based in New York City/Long Island, is the _Eden II and Genesis Foundation_. The organisation’s primary purpose is to provide much needed funds for programs and services that support individuals with Autism. The _Eden II and Genesis Foundation_ supports programs, serving children and adults with autism, including day schools for children, as well as day and residential services for adolescents and adults. > Dr. Moretti was an attending physician at Staten Island University Hospital and a staunch advocate of the Eden II School. When Anthony and Laura Moretti’s son, Anthony Jr., was diagnosed with autism his parents enrolled him at the Eden II School. It was his abiding love for his son and gentle, compassionate nature that compelled Dr. Moretti to take a more active role in the school and its work, not only for his son, but for all children and adults affected by autism…

</div>

The subject of the [previous post](https://pheromonetalk.com/t/agricultural-specialisterne-rural-employment-revolution-for-those-with-autism/50615/394) was the _Eden II and Genesis Foundation_. Formerly known as the _Foundation for the Advancement of Autistic Persons (FAAP)_, the organisation’s primary purpose is to provide much needed funds for programs and services that support individuals with Autism. The _Eden II School for Autistic Children_, located in Staten Island, New York, was founded in 1976 after _FAAP_ parents identified an existing successful program–the _Eden Institute_ (located in Princeton, New Jersey).

The _Eden Institute_’s new facility incorporates in its design what I described in an [earlier post](https://pheromonetalk.com/t/agricultural-specialisterne-rural-employment-revolution-for-those-with-autism/50615/349)–‘Neuro-typical’ environments that can prepare the Autistic individual for the outside world by potentially helping such an individual develop generalisation skills, which are often poor in Autism. So the _Eden Institute_ incorporates frequent ‘generalisation’ exercises in which pupils venture into the neighboring food court and stores or work in some of the restaurants…

> [@](#):
>
> …At Eden, the balance between the outside world and the school’s safe harbor takes on yet a different character. …Eden is in a mixed-use complex, with retail, offices, a hotel, and restaurants. The site was chosen for a purpose. Eden’s previous home, in a former telephone-switching station, was isolated. …[The mixed-use complex] allows the school to share resources, such as a health-club swimming pool.
>
> Unique to Eden is its mini Wawa convenience store, staffed by supervised students and open part-time to the public. (The Wawa chain is a corporate partner of the school.) So the interface with the outside world is very real. But at the same time, the building also makes sensory accommodation.
>
> Designed by KSS Architects, the 38,300-square-foot facility incorporates an existing 12,900-square-foot houselike, gabled structure. KSS retained the intimate scale and form, giving the new section a contrasting flat roof and modest massing. The configuration, which accommodates early-intervention and outreach programs along with the day school for 62 students, aged 3 to 21, centers around a courtyard with a protected outdoor play area and a multipurpose gym. As in all these schools, exercise is important for both its calming effects and motor-skill development.
>
> While the wide, daylit corridors are straight shots, changes in floor-tile colors signal classroom entrances. The flexible teaching rooms …are designed for round tables, high faculty-student ratios, and ample maneuvering space, rather than blackboard-oriented lecture seating. These classrooms also have rows of small side rooms, offering a scale shift for more focused learning.
>
> An unusual feature is each classroom’s home-style kitchen (in addition to the school’s professional cafeteria kitchen, where vocational training occurs). Here the daily life-learning curriculum actively involves students in lunch preparation, from grocery shopping to dishwasher loading.
>
> While Eden’s visual connections to daylight and surrounding greenery are strong, its sensory controls are subtle. They include indirect lighting, high-rated acoustic separations, muted natural colors, a large frosted window in the gym to diffuse distracting views, and an alarm system with a strobe specially synchronized to reduce jarring effects…

In the past week, I have mentioned a number of New York/New Jersey-based nonprofit organisations dedicated to helping individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Another such organisation is _HeartShare Human Services of New York_. The _HeartShare School_ is a non-profit educational institution located in Brooklyn, New York. The school caters to children ages 5 to 21 who fall on the Autism Spectrum or who have other developmental disabilities. A unique aspect of the school is its integration of [TEACCH](https://pheromonetalk.com/t/agricultural-specialisterne-rural-employment-revolution-for-those-with-autism/50615/54) with [Applied Behaviour Analysis](https://pheromonetalk.com/t/agricultural-specialisterne-rural-employment-revolution-for-those-with-autism/50615/121). All of the students in the school, ages 5 through 19, participated in the various projects.
>
> “I liked my science project called the Sink or Float Project,” said 11-year-old Ariella. “I also liked my friend’s projects and it was fun. I can’t wait for next year.”
> Rokhaya, a 13-year-old student made an underwater volcano. “Next year, I want to do something even more challenging.”

[My last post](https://pheromonetalk.com/t/agricultural-specialisterne-rural-employment-revolution-for-those-with-autism/50615/399) mentioned _HeartShare Human Services of New York_. This is a nonprofit human services agency dedicated to improving the lives of people in need of special services and support, including individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Each year, the organisation hosts a gallery art show featuring artwork created by children and adults with various developmental disabilities…

> [@](#):
>
> …[2010’s] exhibit features more than 50 pieces which include paintings, mixed media pieces, masks, and photography by more than 35 artists. This year’s artists attend a HeartShare day program or live in a group home or apartment. Three students from HeartShare’s preschools are also featured. They were all provided different mediums–watercolors, pencils, markers, acrylics, mixed media, clay, masks, photography, and more. They were encouraged to express their unique artistic viewpoint of the world around them, as well as explore their feelings, hopes and fears.
>
> All of the artwork will be available for purchase. [In 2009,] ArtShare for HeartShare presented over 45 pieces of artwork representing more than 30 artists. The exhibition sold 16 pieces which was a record for the gallery for number of artworks sold in a single show. HeartShare is hoping to top its own record this year…
