The subject of recent posts has mainly been on Autism-related events and organisations in the state of Ohio.

To the east, _Special Surfers_ is a non-profit organization (501c3) that provides the opportunity for individuals with various challenges, including children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. There is no cost to participants or their families, and all equipment and instruction is provided. Special Surfer events are held on the third Tuesday of each month in June, July, and August at Gooches Beach in Kennebunk, Maine…

> [@](#):
>
> I am absolutely ecstatic to be helping out tonight in Kennebunk for Aquaholics Special Surfers Night. I only started surfing about three or four years ago and I can honestly say it has changed my life. So much so that, just as people warned me, it is dictating where I’m living and how I spend most of my time away from work. It’s such a great feeling having a hobby that transitions into a lifestyle.
> Half the fun happens out of the water – in the surf community. It’s always nice to get a friendly wave when you’re on the road and someone notices the surfboard on the roof of your car, or when you find someone else with a wetsuit suntan in the middle of the winter.
> Tonight is the perfect example of what else happens in the surf community. Sure, it’s great to be able to have a whole beach to yourself and catch 25 waves in a session, but it can be just as fun to help someone… Tonight will be just that kind of night in Kennebunk, but magnified beyond belief. Below you can read all about Special Surfers and how you can help tonight, next month, in August or by simply donating.
> _Kennebunk, ME For Immediate Release Surf Shop Raises Funds to Bring the Joy of Surfing to Special Needs Children and Teens Special Surfer Night, a nonprofit offering free surfing adventures for special needs children and young adults, announces an Indiegogo campaign to raise funds to bring the joys of surfing to hundreds of ‘special surfers’ each summer. Since 2004, Special Surfer Night has ben organized by surfer Nanci Boutet, whose Aquaholics Surf Shop provided the free wetsuits, surf boards, and SUPs. The program, which pairs volunteer teams with special surfers, has become so popular that Aquaholics owner Nanci Boutet created a nonprofit to separate the program from the shop. Newly armed with its nonprofit status, Special Surfer Night is now seeking funding to buy its own surfboards, wetsuits, and SUPs, and get these kids into the water. Every third Tuesday during the summer months, families with children on the autism spectrum [and various other challenges] …come from as far as Toronto, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island to give their kids a chance to enjoy the freedom and exhilaration of surfing. Many of these kids struggle with social and sporting activities. But once a month in June, July, and August, 100 Special Surfers get outfitted in wetsuits, paired with volunteers, and head out into the surf. The parents, families (and many interested bystanders) cheer from the beach and take photographs, as the kids ride the waves, some on their bellies, some on their knees, and some getting all the way to their feet. The volunteers, Boutet explains, benefit as much as the special surfers. Surfer Tom Gale, who’s been volunteering for 4 years, remembers every person he’s worked with, and says, “Each one has some fear going into it, and helping these special kids transform that into excitement, happiness, and joy is such a thrill. They show the surfing ?stoke? in ways that are so honest and unfiltered. They are beaming, hugging you, just totally stoked. And their parents are touched by it all, too.”_
>
> _…Aquaholics has offered surf lessons since it opened in 2002. One day Maureen Dow, a special education teacher, asked Boutet to take a few kids with autism spectrum disorder out for a surf session. “They had such a great time–and so did I,” Boutet says. She began recruiting volunteers among the local surfer community, enlisting the town’s cooperation, and Special Surfer Night was born. When parents of children with other conditions began calling, the answer was always “Yes, we’ll find a way.”…_

_Zenaviv_ is a Washington metropolitan area-based nonprofit whose mission is to transform the perception of people with Autism from one of deficiency to one of talent and productive abilities. > In a proactive effort to continue to give back to the local community, Four Seasons Hotel Washington, DC commissioned a 345 square foot (32 square metre) mural inspired by the Hotel’s local Historic Georgetown neighbourhood. The artwork that beautified the behind the scenes employee area was completed by Zenaviv, a social enterprise that inspires hope and creates brighter futures for children with autism or special needs by celebrating their unique abilities, promoting their talents and improving their quality of life. The organisation’s mission, touching personal backstory and tie to the local community made it the perfect fit to create this special piece.
> “We are excited to partner with Four Seasons Hotel Washington, DC to provide an avenue for these individuals with autism to express their unique abilities,” says Harish Bikmal, co-founder, Zenaviv. “This opportunity and recognition of the special talent of special needs children brings more exposure, and could help address one of the biggest concerns for most parents of individuals with autism – the future of their kids. Such efforts by Four Seasons gives the parents hope and confidence of a better future for their kids.”
> Zenaviv was founded in 2016 …Their mission is to transform the perception of people with autism from one of deficiency to one of talent and productive abilities.
>
> …While it was the first time that Four Seasons Hotel Washington commissioned a piece of artwork of this size for the employee area, as well as the first time that Zenaviv added a wall painting to their portfolio, the planning and execution took less than two months. Himal Bikmal and Lee Jaworek, along with their art therapists Heather Hewitz and Caitlin Mason and volunteer Scott Daniel Day, painted a total of 21 iconic Georgetown buildings.
> “It has been an honour to work with such an outstanding organisation in our local community,” said David Bernand, General Manager, Four Seasons Hotel Washington, DC. “We enjoyed welcoming Himal and Lee to our Hotel and seeing their Georgetown inspired mural come to life. The mural is an inspiration to all of us at the Hotel of what can be accomplished when supporting each other and looking beyond first impressions and perceptions.”
> Himal personally handpicked his favourite architectural structures including Four Seasons Hotel Washington, ENO Wine Bar, Michael Kors, Market Street Diamonds, PNC Bank, Pizzeria Paradiso, Georgetown Cupcake, Walking Company, Dean and Deluca and Georgetown Veterinary Hospital among many others.
>
> …The team at Four Seasons Hotel Washington, DC will act as ambassadors for Zenaviv to the local community and among Four Seasons hotels and beyond, so that the recognition of their hard work and dedication towards this important cause can be even further recognised, embraced and celebrated…

To the east, _Paddle NYC_, is a renowned fundraising event for autism and the environment…

> [@](#):
>
> Heavy summertime raindrops pelted the roof sharply as we clambered into our Uber through the early morning gloom still half asleep. We were headed for the 2017 Surfers Environmental Alliance (SEA) Paddle NYC, the renowned fundraising race for autism and the environment now in its 11th year.
> My partner at Plastic Tides, Gordon Middleton, and I had been invited to paddle on the CLIF Bar relay team. As the hosts of the Devil’s Isle Challenge in Bermuda, an endurance race that supports the environment and youth, we were excited to see the parallels between SEA Paddle and our own event. We accepted the relay team’s offer with gratitude.
> When we reached the race site the rain had cleared and was replaced with low-hanging gray clouds and a comfortably cool and damp atmosphere. We made our way into the fray as antsy paddlers, volunteers and interested passersby milled and mingled. Nearly a hundred boards lined the guardrail separating the boardwalk from a small beach tucked away directly beneath the iconic Manhattan Bridge.
> Approaching the race site we spotted a group of volunteers busily working to clean up the very dirty beach. We grabbed some gloves and stepped in to help pick up trash. The site was in environmental shambles and I soon found myself in dry heaves after reaching for the wrong patch of urine soaked polystyrene. I stood up to remove another full trash bag and spotted fresh cases of bottled water being loaded down to the beachfront. This sharply juxtaposed with the ongoing effort behind me. In those moments it’s important to remember that not everyone is an expert on plastic pollution and effective solutions, and the responsibility is on race directors to keep their participants safe and hydrated. Fortunately we’re already talking about how to change things for 2018 and hydrate in a sustainable way.
>
> The next time I looked up from my task, it was to the voice of Will Yandell, our host, approaching with a smile and exclaiming “Gordon, Christian, the race starts in 5 minutes! Who’s going first?” He tossed us a couple CLIF singlets and sent us off to find our board, a shiny 14’ Bark Vapor that fit the bill for this twenty-five-mile endeavor around the [New York City].
> I took the opening leg and stood at the start line awaiting the hooter. The horn sounded and the traffic jam that ensued had me bobbing and weaving to find open water. Once I broke out I disregarded my complete lack of a warm-up and laid down the hammer, stroking fast and hard and passing some paddlers. I fell into a rhythm, meditating on the task at hand and soaking in the unique surroundings. The East River was eerily calm and the water moved swiftly passed, block by block. A couple miles in I was leading a three-man draft train with sights set on the only paddler ahead of me just a couple hundred yards away. According to Derek (the solo paddler directly behind me) we were moving at a steady 6.5mph with a slight current in our favor. Before I knew it I was drenched in sweat, gliding under the 59th Street Bridge, and handing off to Andrew Dima ? a local waterman and owner of A-Team Paddleboarding in Rockaway Beach. As Andrew took off in a flash I contemplated jumping in to rinse off, but quickly thought better of it. This was the East River after all.
> What followed over the next few hours, and well into the evening was an absolute blast. By 10am we were singing and dancing on the back of the boat, cheering on every single paddler we passed…
>
> …as much as the event’s $30,000 prize purse is appreciated by the paddlers, for everyone involved from the organizer Richie Lee and his team to the children with autism who benefit from the race, it isn’t really about the money, either. It’s about people coming together …for a common cause. Coming together to do something they love and amplify their positive energy as it ripples through the community.

>
> The airport was independently assessed in person by DisabledGo surveyors who looked at each stage of the passenger journey. The access guide talks users through the accessibility of the airport – from transport to check-in, security to departures, together with the assistance available. It also provides detailed information – from walking distances to toilet locations, fixtures and fittings to dimensions, signage to hearing assistance and lighting.
>
> London Stansted is the first London airport to publish a fully transparent, independent fine grain detailed pan-disability access guide. M.A.G, the airport operator is committed to enhancing the experience of its passengers, and the guide aims to give disabled people and their families the confidence to fully access the airport and have the best trip possible…
>
> The guide launches at a time when consumer research carried out by Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) states that passengers with reduced mobility demonstrated a strong demand for information, such as walking distances, waiting times, number and type of accessible toilets. Equally the guide looks to address the needs of people with a wide range of requirements and providing many essential details for people with hidden impairments.
>
> The information in the guide will enable people with access concerns to independently decide for themselves the best way to access the airport and to decide in advance how much assistance they will need…
