The subject of recent posts has mainly been on Autism-related events and organisations in the state of Ohio.

To the northwest, _Vibes earplugs_ are a new product designed not to block outside noise, but to lower the volume. The nonprofit _Autism Society of Minnesota_ has partnered with the business that created _Vibes_ to test out the new earplugs…

> [@](#):
>
> A Minnesota entrepreneur is getting praise from around the country for his tiny idea.
>
> …The small ear plugs are getting big praise – but not for their intended use. The business mission is taking a heartfelt turn.
> There’s just something about seeing your favorite musician play in person, but sometimes live concerts can have loud consequences. Jackson Mann of Minneapolis knows firsthand.
>
> “I had originally ended up rupturing my ear drum due to loud sound at a concert,” he said.
> That injury got the music lover’s attention, loud and clear. He started wearing ear plugs, but quickly realized they muffle and distort the music.
> “That was the real catalyst, to me, to try to create something that allowed people to still hear the sound of music clearly, just at a lower decibel where your ears weren’t becoming damaged or strained,” Mann said.
> With the help of the University of Minnesota’s sound lab, he created Vibes high-fidelity, discreet ear plugs.
> “Nobody wants a big, bright, dorky, neon foam piece sticking out of their ears,” Mann said.
> The way Vibes work, instead of blocking out or muffling the sound around you, they simply lower the volume, so you can still communicate with the people around you.
> Four months in, he was asked to pitch the product in Los Angeles on national TV …He soon realized how good Vibes can be.
>
> …The emails started pouring in – customers were using Vibes for sensory issues.
> Noah’s dad’s email brought Mann to tears.
> “We have tried ear muffs, ear phones, ear plugs and even ear phones with his electronics playing to try and buffer the sound that tends to cause him displeasure,” [the father] wrote.
> Like many people with autism, Noah hears noises much much louder than the rest of us. From Dayton, Ohio, his father says Noah first tried them at a play, when he was agitated from the noise.
> “I got him to put them in, and literally not another issue the whole time,” Zinkiewicz said. "So I’m literally texting my wife, “Hey they’re working! He’s sitting here, not even budging with them at all.! So it was really cool.”
> Since then, Noah has been able to explore the world like never before. Zinkiewicz says the family was finally able to go on a cruise because Vibes control Noah’s hearing level so well.
> “I tell people about them nonstop, because it makes a big difference,” he said.
> The correlation is no surprise to the head of the Autism Society of Minnesota, Jonah Weinburg, who says ear protection typically looks like large head phones.
> “To have something that isn’t quite as obvious, that maybe just fits in the ear, could help someone get what they need as far as blocking out sound, but also just navigate the world in a more normal, less outstanding sort of way,” Weinburg said.
> The society has partnered with Vibes so his clients can try out the technology.
> “It may not have been created for people with autism, but it can certainly help make their lives a lot better,” Weinburg said.
> Mann says he’s surprised and thrilled to have all the attention on his product.
> “This was a discovery for us as much as it has been for other people, in terms of finding out that our product can really work in their lives to make it better,” he said.
> Mann is now focusing on catering to people with special needs. Vibes has a new calling, and they’re listening.
> “Yes, it’s off from our first mission of concerts and events, but it has a much better feeling to be helping people in that world,” Mann said.
> Vibes cost $23.99 a pair. He sells them online and in a few stores. The company is growing, and Jackson and his one full-time employee are going strong with their newfound mission.

Hi Mr Scrunge I appreciate the response and will keep your opinion in mind when posting 🙂

The subject of recent posts has mainly been on Autism-related events and organisations in the state of Ohio.

To the west, _Heartspring Inc._ is a Wichita, Kansas-based nonprofit center for children with various challenges, including Autism Spectrum Disorders. The Autism CARE Walk is _Heartspring_’s largest fundraising event…

> [@](#):
>
> The Heartspring Community of Autism Resources and Education (CARE) Program will bring together more than 5,000 autism advocates at the ninth annual Autism CARE Walk… The event will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, 2016, downtown at the WaterWalk. Participants are challenged to create teams and to fundraise for the Heartspring CARE Program, which provides outreach training, consultations and programs to support individuals and families impacted by autism.
>
> The walk has grown from nearly 500 participants in its first year in 2007 to more than 5,000 participants at the 2015 event. The increased support allowed the Heartspring CARE Program to expand its services and programs with some areas doubling or tripling the number of children served within the last year.
>
> “We are so excited to be expanding our program to serve more children impacted by autism,” Nicole McLain, director of CARE and autism outreach, said. “Last year, our summer camp… increased from a two-week program to an eight-week program. We were also able to expand our CARE Clubs from one club to 12 clubs each with unique themes and focuses.”
>
> Free registration opens on Monday, Feb. 1, 2016, on the Autism CARE Walk website… Participants have the opportunity to further their support by purchasing a T-shirt for $10, which provides a child the opportunity to attend one week of Heartspring CARE Clubs. These clubs allow children to learn valuable social skills, build confidence and make friendships while participating in different group activities and discussions.
>
> …Before and after the walk, attendees will enjoy family activities in an autism-friendly environment.
>
> Heartspring is a worldwide center for children with special needs. The residential school, outpatient pediatric services, and the Community of Autism Resources and Education (CARE) Program aim to help children of all ages succeed by gaining the skills necessary for a more independent lifestyle.

To the south, _Easterseals Arkansas_’ _Grand Prairie Developmental Preschool_ is a Stuttgart, Arkansas-based nonprofit that provides quality early childhood special education and pediatric therapy services for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years. The nonprofit’s staff prepares children with various challenges, including Autism Spectrum Disorders, for kindergarten…

> [@](#):
>
> Get up. Get dressed. Have breakfast. Go to school. Come home. Eat dinner. Do homework. Take bath. Go to bed. Sounds like a typical day for school age kids, right? Well, for some, especially those with some type of autism, it means much more than that. It’s a way of life and survival in a world that’s all their own.
>
> …April is National Autism Awareness Month and two Stuttgart mothers are working to bring awareness to their hometown. Magen Millerd, mother of six-year-old Parker, and Stephanie Gwin, mom of five-year-old Noah, are forming the Stuttgart Area Autism Support group and hope to be a non-profit organization soon, holding fundraisers and raising money that will stay in the area.
> Both women said that autism comes in many levels and degrees. It covers a wide spectrum, from minor symptoms to severe.
>
> …For Noah, it was little quirks that first got Gwin’s attention when he was 13-months old.
> “He didn’t like anyone mesing with his hands and was obsessed with spinning objects,” she said. “He wasn’t trying to talk much and at 15 months, he quit speaking.”
> "After early evaluations through the Department of Human Services he was diagnosed at 20 months of age and began therapy at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. Noah has low-end autism… It affects his social skills, and he has to have everything on a set schedule, the same routine every day. He is now a student at Easter Seals Arkansas Grand Prairie Child Development Center and has started to speak more, is writing letters and knows his ABC’s and how to count.
> “He is a different child after a year and a half at Easter Seals,” she said.
>
> …For Parker, it took a little longer to get a diagnosis. Millerd said she began noticing something different when he was 2. He would take gifts, like toy cars, and line them up according to size and color.
> “He always had to have his hands on something,” she said. “You couldn’t tell him no, he made up names for everything and would only eat certain foods.”
> Parker’s social skills are the opposite of Noah’s. He is very social. He likes everyone and thinks he knows everyone.
> “He is not negative and has lots of personality,” Millerd said. “Sometimes to the extent of being too friendly.”
>
> …He was at Grand Prairie Child Development Center from the age of 9 months, but at age four, there was still no autism diagnosis. He became labeled at first as a ‘problem child,’ until Millerd kept pushing for answers from doctors. When he entered Kindergarten, he would go into a shell when told to do things. Finally, in October at the age of 5, he was diagnosed with Asperger’s, a form of autism.
>
> …The most important thing that helps children like Noah and Parker is schedules. They both start the day with a routine. One change can lead to a meltdown. For Noah, picture schedules tell him when he is going to play, eat, etc., and this keeps him calm. He is picked up at the same time every day and has a schedule at home…
> For Parker, his day begins with breakfast and his dad taking him to school. He, too, works by a listed schedule.
> “It’s better to take the safe road,” Millerd said. “No matter what, you have to control his environment the best you can.”
> Gwin said she has to explain to Noah exactly where they are going and what they will be doing if it’s something out of his comfort zone.
> “I get eye-level with him and make him listen to me,” she said…
>
> Millerd said positive reinforcement works so much better than negative. “That’s the Golden Rule for autistic children.”
>
> …Life can be very hard in a school setting for autistic children…
>
> “My advice to teachers who have autistic students, is to listen to the parents of those kids,” Millerd said “…they just have to have their schedule and some things make them anxious.”
> Gwin said it is also important for other parents and teachers to teach children that not everyone is the same and that it’s okay to be different.
>
> …Early intervention is the key, according to these two moms.
> “As a mom, you will know when something isn’t right or different,” Gwin said. Follow up with your concerns.
>
> Their advice is to find a support group of other parents and educate yourself and your family. Sometimes it’s hard to get family members to accept that something is wrong or they see it differently. Family members can disagree on how to handle it or make excuses, which makes life harder on the child.
> Millerd and Gwin hope that with the Stuttgart support group, they can raise money for local schools to have more resources like supplies and teacher training, as well as speakers at schools and in the community.
>
> To help raise awareness, the Stuttgart Junior Woman’s Club sold blue ribbons to hang in doorways and buildings. Thursday, the group presented to Gwin a check for $1,100…

By 2010 Heather was cutting the ribbon on the newly formed not-for-profit charitable society’s very own East Kelowna Farm and launching the epic journey to this magical haven.

There, the Chartwell Center will be able to serve even more students and will continue its role as a community resource – educating others on best practices for helping people with autism.

The subject of recent posts has mainly been on Autism-related events and organisations in the American state of Ohio.

On the other side of the globe, in Australia, the ‘Inclusive Beaches Project’ aims to support inclusion of children of different abilities and backgrounds to join their local Surf Life Saving Clubs, Nippers programs and learn to be safe at the beach. In partnership with _Surf Life Saving Australia_, the nonprofit _Autism Spectrum Australia_ (_Aspect_) is delivering training, resources and support to surf life saving clubs around New South Wales and Queensland…

> [@](#):
>
> Surf Life Saving Australia and Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) have joined together to create a suite of resources for children and families with disabilities who are joining Nippers.
> The ‘What We Do at Nippers’ program helps prepare children with disabilities for their first Nippers experience, as well as promote beach safety and inclusion activities. After a successful event with 60 children held in Northern NSW earlier this year, the inclusion resources are now available for all Surf Life Saving Clubs, parents and children to use online. The website includes videos, downloadable resources and visual supports.
> “Our aim is to support the community, groups and organisations to be inclusive of all people with a disability. SLSA have welcomed this support with open arms and we are delighted by the inclusive resource we have been able to create together” says Jodi Rodgers, Autism Spectrum Australia.
> “Inclusion …is about being an organisation where everyone feels welcome and valued. This starts from when a potential new member comes into contact with the club for the first time, through to the member actively participating in club activities” said a spokesperson for Surf Life Saving Australia…

The subject of recent posts has mainly been on Autism-related events and organisations in the America state of Ohio.

In South Asia, a special program run by an India-based nonprofit is helping children on the Autism Spectrum…

> [@](#):
>
> …Among the several challenges that an autistic child faces, there are three big ones..
> While neurologists across the world are working to solve these three challenges, a theatre specialist, professor and artist, Dr. Parasuram Ramamoorthi has achieved this using a very simple tool that is seen very often in the theatre- a face mask!
>
> …?First I used a physical mask with the children but the material of the mask was not comfortable to many. It either irritated them or gave them a sensory overload. So, out of 10 children, 4- 5 did not like it and removed it immediately. It was then that I thought of the Kathakali and the Yakshagana face mask,? explains Dr. Parasuram Ramamoorthi.
>
> …Ramamoorthi himself is a theatre professor, so his familiarity with the art form runs deep and he reveals that for an autistic child to get his face painted is not a small thing. Their first reaction is to get scared and run away.
> “Then I will tell them that -okay will do it with your brother, sibling or the father-and once they see the outcome, they begin to like it and slowly start enjoying it. And if we do it before a mirror, the child starts making faces, so we draw a monkey, tiger or lion on the face. If the children are familiar with the story of Hanuman, Ram, and Krishna- we draw these pictures and if they are western oriented – we draw western figures…” says Ramamoorthi.
>
> …The face mask not only encourages the child to get into the character but also helps the child focus and connect with the painter, which is otherwise impossible. According to Dr. Ramamoorthi, the biggest change that the exercise brings about in the autistic child’s life is to increase his/ her bonding with parents and siblings. He explains further by saying that when the parents started involving in the activity with their child, the child began looking straight into the face of the parent, something they had never done before…

> …Peak Potential now runs indoor programs 4 days a week at 3 different locations across New Jersey and an outdoor program.
> Staffed by both climbers and non-climbers from the local community, Peak Potential’s indoor program is a 12 week introduction to rock climbing that exposes children to a sport that they normally would not have a chance to participate in. Participants who complete our introductory program and wish to continue climbing are welcome to apply for additional sessions in our indoor facilities or to join us outdoors.
>
> Through generous donations and the dedication of both it’s executive board and its members, the program remains free and open to any child who has a physical disability and would like to try a sport where his/her condition does not exclude participation.Learn more about this unique organization and the kids that benefit from it, its board members and volunteers, and how you can be a part of bringing this sport to many deserving children in the area.
