The subject of recent posts has mainly been on Autism-related events and organisations in the state of Ohio.

To the north, _Autism Ontario Windsor Essex_ is a nonprofit based in Canada that has just held its annual Walk for Autism Awareness in Leamington…

> [@](#):
>
> Though the $22,000 raised at the sixth annual Walk/Run for Autism Awareness held at Leamington’s Sea Cliff Park Sunday will help fund vital services in the county, the value of the event isn’t measured just in dollars.
> It’s also an opportunity for parents who are raising a child with autism to enjoy an outing with people walking the same path in life, in a way that most families take for granted.
> “At events like this, though I don’t know 50 per cent of the people’s names, we recognize each other as parents,” said Cathy Crosby, who was running in the event with her husband Craig and sons …for the second time.
> “We’re there for each other. Watching Max (who has been diagnosed with autism) move around the park, the music and not having to worry about him while we’re here is great.”
>
> Just how much an autism diagnosis impacts a family is illustrated by the Crosbys’ move back to Windsor… nine years ago. Crosby has family here who can offer support and the wait times for services here, though lengthy, are still shorter than much of the province.
>
> “We want to give back for the support we’ve received here,” Crosby said. “We’ve used the different services a lot.”
> Sunday’s event attracted 250 runners and walkers. That’s nearly triple the number who attended the first outing in 2013.
> Ann Diab, who co-founded the run …said initially the goal was just to raise awareness of autism. It has since morphed into an important fundraiser to help expand services in Essex County.
> “I think parents can often feel very alone,” Diab said.
> "As a parent of child with autism, meeting new families through the services being added has been the most important impact of what we’re doing. More families are coming forward and not feeling alone.
> “We’re creating small wins within our community.”
> Tera Kimball said educating the public about autism is vital.
> The social isolation of children with autism can be heartbreaking.
> “It’s a constant battle for him just to have a friend,” said Kimball, whose nine-year-old son Raydon has autism.
> “My son is loving and caring but autism is so wide-ranging it’s hard for adults to understand it, let alone kids.”
> Some of the programs created directly out of the event’s fundraising efforts, which after Sunday’s event totals just short of a $100,000 over six years, are a parents’ group, cooking classes and special development programs.
>
> …“Awareness has been raised and now it’s starting to filter into the schools.”
> Much of the progress in expanding county services has been made in partnership with the volunteer, charitable group Autism Ontario Windsor Essex.
> But it’s slow progress and the reality is what’s offered falls far short of the amount of services needed, according to [an]
> Autism Ontario Windsor Essex volunteer…
> Currently, parents are being told those next in line to receive services registered in Aug. 2016.
>
> …Frustratingly for parents, once they do get their children into government programs, they face the deadline of doing it all over again once they turn 18 years old and are classified as adults.
> Funding comes from a different ministry for adults and families must re-apply for it. It can be years before the appropriate support is put back in place.
> The gap that has been created in service has forced parents to foot significant bills for private support or quit jobs to stay home to tend to their adult child…

Hi Mr Scrunge I appreciate the response and will keep your opinion in mind when posting 🙂

The subject of recent posts has mainly been on Autism-related events and organisations in the American state of Ohio.

On the other side of the Atlantic, Brighton and Hove City Council in East Sussex in the United Kingdom is home to a program that tries to help students with Autism Spectrum Disorders at school…

> [@](#):
>
> …The ‘Just Right’ programme was created by specialist teachers and health professionals in the city.
>
> It has helped students communicate their emotions and needs.
>
> The programme uses colour zones to help children understand the emotions they are experiencing and how they can go about managing them.
>
> The colour coding is used across schools in Brighton and Hove.
>
> Each zone has a different sensory or emotional state.
>
> The four colour zones are green, ‘just right’, which describes the child’s emotions as calm, alert and focused.
>
> Orange is ‘fizzy’, which means the child is feeling bubbling, not calm, anxious and possibly hyper alert.
>
> Blue is ‘floppy or fidgety’, which signifies the student being under-stimulated, tired, bored and not alert, and possibly feeling ill.
>
> Red is ‘crisis’ where the child is unable to cope, exhibiting challenging behaviour wanting to run away, shutting down from the outside world.
>
> The colour coding replaces the need to use complex words to describe emotions, which, to children with autism, can seem confusing or even worrying.
>
> Sadie Gillett, lead specialist for autism in Brighton and Hove’s inclusion support service, said: "The brilliant thing about ‘just right’ is that it is absolutely tailored to the individual child.
>
> "Each child will have their own particular set of circumstances that keep them feeling just right.
>
> "Parents and carers can also use the tools and strategies we develop, which gives a consistent approach across children’s lives.
>
> “We’ve had some incredible success stories. It’s beginning to make a significant difference in our schools, and a number of parents have told us it’s making a real difference to their lives.”
>
> Specialist teachers work with individual children and their parents to understand, from the child’s point of view, what each colour zone looks like to the child.
>
> They also look at what the triggers are that take the child from one zone to another, and what can be done to help keep them stay in the green zone as much as possible.
>
> This included making sure students have the same seat everyday, short periods of exercise to help them calm down, and giving students a quiet, calm and blank safe space to retreat to when they are over-stimulated or in the red zone.
>
> Parents and teachers can get more information about the Just Right programme…

To the east, the _New England Center for Children_ is a Southborough, Massachusetts-based nonprofit school for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. The nonprofit aims to transform the lives of children with Autism through education, research, and technology…

> Over the weekend, the Franklin Pierce University [FPU] women’s ice hockey team held its ‘Skate for Autism’ campaign, in conjunction with its home games against Saint Michael’s on Friday and Saturday at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. In all, the initiative raised $5000, which will be donated to the New England Center for Children in Southborough…
>
> “Organizations such as the NECC work tirelessly to make our local community a better place, and to be able to recognize them and thank them in this way is very rewarding for our program,” said head coach David Stockdale.
>
> The Ravens wore special-edition jerseys for the two games, which were then sold as part of the fundraising efforts. In addition, the team conducted a t-shirt sales drive in the weeks leading up to the games and collected walk-up donations at the rink during both contests.
>
> “This process begins as nothing more than an idea in the spring and takes several months of planning and organization on the part of the players…” continued Stockdale.
>
> All proceeds will be donated to the NECC, which, per its own description, is a ‘private, nonprofit autism research and education center.’ [The NECC tries] to ‘transform the lives of children with autism worldwide through education, research, and technology.’
>
> “All of us at NECC are touched by the generosity of [FPU] …and all of those who supported this event,” said Jared Bouzan, Chief Development Officer at The New England Center for Children. “Community support broadens the awareness and ultimately, the understanding, of autism.”
>
> It marked the second straight season the women’s ice hockey team has chosen a community initiative to focus on as part of a special-event weekend. A year ago, the team worked with the Skate for the 22 Foundation.
>
> “I am very proud of the commitment the players in our program have shown to raising money for outstanding local organizations like the Skate for the 22 Foundation last year and the NECC this year,” said Stockdale. “I think it speaks to the character of the players in our program that they had absolutely no hesitation when I asked them if they wanted to take on this challenge again this year, and I have no doubt they will continue to find deserving local organizations to support in the seasons to come.”
>
> On the ice, the [FPU] (3-4-0) won both games against Saint Michael’s over the weekend and will return to the ice on Nov. 17-18, when they travel… for a two-game weekend series. [FPU] will meet the Pioneers at 7:30 p.m. Friday and 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Sports Center of Connecticut in Shelton, Conn…

>
> The event featured …entertainment, silent auctions and a raffle prize (worth some $13,000) for a trip to Paris, France.
>
> “The gala has been running for about 12 years,” said Dr. J.P. Gedeon, executive director of the Shining Through Centre. “It started with five families that could not find services they deemed to be appropriate for their children, so they opened the centre, hired qualified people and got a program going…and it slowly grew over time until to where it’s today…”
>
> The organization’s two locations …are considered centres of excellence when it comes to Applied Behavior Analysis …therapy, the only scientifically validated method, known to yield tangible and positive results when working with children with autism, said Gedeon.
>
> The way this model works is; every child has a dedicated therapist who’s with them all day, every day, Monday to Friday. The therapist is supported by a team of other professionals. The cost for a family to send their child to the Shining Through Centre costs is $60,000/year, which is quite reasonable compared to fees charged by similar centres ( maximum of $120,000), explained Gedeon.
>
> This year, the gala hopes to raise $225,000.
>
> Thanks to the proceeds raised from the annual gala, the centre has been able to offer the same high-quality service without having to raise the tuition fees in over 12 years. The money also helps support important research initiatives, he said.

>
> “This car show is special to us because it is our opportunity to really reach out to the local community and let them know we are part of their lives and we look forward to having them be part of our lives, especially in helping individuals with autism of all ages,” said Kristine Quinby, founder and president of Potential Inc. and the Springtime School.

People really enjoyed that addition to the show.”

To the north, _I Can Dream Theatre Inc._ (_ICDT_) is a Montreal, Quebec, Canada-based nonprofit whose main purpose is to provide individuals with various challenges, including Autism Spectrum Disorders, opportunities to develop their talents in the performing arts. Specifically this is in the areas of acting, singing, dancing and playing musical instruments…

> [@](#):
>
> I have heard a lot of great things about I Can Dream Theatre over the years. As the editor of Inspirations Newspaper, which focuses on upbeat stories related to special needs, I was persuaded to attend the company’s fifth production entitled Remembering Titanic by my colleague Wendy Singer.
>
> With a cast of 24 actors taking to the stage, this year’s production was touted as being bigger and better than ever as the company celebrated its official non-profit status. Over the period of two nights at the Eric Maclean S.J. Center for Performing Arts of Loyola High School in NDG, a group of young actors …from [the age of 19], performed an original script mixed with modern song and dance.
>
> What is so unique about this? The cast includes those with special needs such as Autism…
>
> Opening night marked the company’s first-ever gala, with all proceeds benefiting continued programming, including workshops and employment opportunities for its members. Pierre Fr?geau, founder and senior associate of Fr?geau & Associates, was the honouree. The evening included cocktails and hors d’oeuvres and the opportunity to see the play’s premiere.
>
> Remembering Titanic is a musical comedy based on the infamous story of the Titanic. Audience members did see many familiar characters. Yet the story is not like the one you may remember.
>
> We attended the second show. There was a packed house, filled it seems by mostly family and friends of the performers. You could sense the pride and it was emotional to witness the many well deserved standing ovations.
>
> As the producers told us “Remembering Titanic is I Can Dream Theatre’s fifth original production. This time, it’s a musical dramedy based on the famous story that is over 100 years old. But put away your history books, because this is the story you don’t know. Come board this new tale of family, adventure and romance, where laughter and tears are abound on the grandest ship in the world.”
>
> It began with a homemade film, going back and forth between cast members waving from a makeshift deck to shots of the real Titanic. As the screen went up, the cast introduced themselves one by one via their character. This was indeed not all like the Titantic we saw on film, starring Leonardo Di Caprio. The script …had a lot of funny lines and scenarios and bravo to each and every actor. They were all so poised on stage. Nobody came close to forgetting a line.
>
> Let’s start off with the remarkable Steven Atme, who starred as Captain EJ Smith. Two years ago I met Steven when we invited him to speak at an English Montreal School Board press conference about bullying. He shared the experience of what it was like as someone with Autism being bullied and how he persevered. He performed the song The Prayer, which addresses finding a safe place for every child and gave an address which was so powerful that he has since become a much in demand motivational speaker.
>
> Steven attended McGill Conservatory of Music. He is a pianist, composer, piano teacher, and public speaker. His speech titled Special People Have Dreams recounts his life with Autism, the challenges he faced as a non-verbal child, and how he has succeeded in embracing his talents and passions. He teaches private piano lessons at Summit School to people with and without special needs, including the music teacher. He also helps people with behavioural issues.
>
> …And this Titantic did not have the horribly sad ending of the film. Somehow Captain Smith’s crew saved the ship from sinking. The conclusion was packed with emotion as each cast members ran up one the aisles and high fived audience members. They then gathered …to talk with all of their fans.
>
> Hats off to the The Dreamers Band of David Bush, Benjmain and Ryan Languay and Mary Lou and Michele Matthews. The song list included a true mix, including such favorites as We Are The Champions, I Got You Babe, Love and Marriage, Stayin’ Alive and of course My Heart Will Go On. Every song fit the theme of the scene perfectly.
>
> …\* t was created in September 2011 and obtained non-profit status in August 2015.
>
> One major production is performed annually. Through performance, ICDT gives adults with special needs opportunities to develop and reinforce skills that contribute to their lives: independence, responsibility, commitment, perseverance, social skills, self-confidence and friendship. Last year Merrill Matthews produced a very well received documentary about the group, which premiered at the Guzzo Spheretech Theatre…

> In the water every surfer had two to three people surrounding them; sometimes a counselor would be on hand if a child needed some extra help. Most of the kids really wanted to ride a wave.
>
> Sometimes all they wanted to do was stand up on the board–and that was OK, because the event is focused on what the kids want and what will make them feel good about who they are.
>
> The real story, though, might be the parents; the parents who are holding up signs telling their children that they can surf, that they can ride a wave, that they are somebody special.
>
> There were over 90 families registered this year, and the organizers of the event have always believed that every child should have a chance to surf.
>
> That was certainly the case with Dominque Dixon from South Mills.
>
> Dressed in a wet suit, wearing goggles, Dominque was riding a board through the surf and his parents, Cheryl and Fabiano, were cheering him on.
>
> Last year, Cheryl said, the water was cold. Dominique’s body couldn’t adjust to the change in temperature and he had a seizure.
>
> She and her husband were concerned their son would be afraid to go back in the water, and Surfing for Autism agreed.
>
> The answer?
>
> “They went out and rented him a wetsuit,” she said. “So that he would feel safe getting in the water.”
>
> Dominque did ride some waves and he did stand up on his board – not while riding a wave, but he did stand, and his smile, the smiles of his family and everyone who helped him accomplish his goal told the story.
>
> “It is always awesome to see the pure joy not only on the faces of the participants who were surfing but also on all who were involved and observing the day,” Eileen Lowery, co-founder and president of Surfing for Autism said, and Dominique’s story was just one of many.
>
> The community support for Surfing for Autism has been tremendous since 2010, the first time the event was held. How the Outer Banks has embraced the event was highlighted Friday evening when [an] Award was presented.
>
> …[The award] honors a business that has contributed significantly to the success of the event. This year the award was given to Whitney and Jesse Hines, owners of Surfin’ Spoon…
>
> Co-founder Mark Slagle mentioned the couple had donated $11,000 over the years. When the couple came forward to accept their award, an envelope with an additional $4,000 was given to Surfing for Autism.
>
> That contribution comes from the change customers stick between the boards of the ceiling of their store on the Beach Road at milepost 10.5, honoring a tradition when …in the 60s and how patrons left tips for their servers.
>
> Next year’s Surfing for Autism is already scheduled for August 10-11…

Hi Mr Scrunge I appreciate the response and will keep your opinion in mind when posting 🙂

The subject of recent posts has mainly been on Autism-related events and organisations in the state of Ohio.

To the west of the United States, nonprofit _The Arc of Fresno/Madera Counties_ last month worked together with _Fresno Yosemite International Airport_, _SkyWest Airlines_, _TSA_, _Delta Global Services_ and _HP_ for a very special event. It was part of a program that helps prepare children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, to ensure their first flying experience is a positive one…

> [@](#):
>
> Last week, SkyWest teams in Fresno, California, worked together to operate a flight much different than our typical [flight]. This unique operation brought the miracle of flight to 50 special passengers as part of the first ever Wings for Autism event in California.
>
> After checking in at the ticket counter, the children and their families were greeted by members of the TSA, who explained what to expect in the screening process. After making their way through Security, they gathered at the gate, where SkyWest crewmembers greeted them and talked to each child individually.
>
> “You’re an actual pilot?” asked one wide-eyed child. “This is the coolest day ever!”
>
> The children then boarded the SkyWest CRJ200 and received a special sendoff from crews lined up on each side of the aircraft. After a full safety demonstration from the flight attendants, they taxied around the airport while enjoying snacks and beverages. They were welcomed back to the gate with high fives and plenty of smiles.
>
> Teaming up with Fresno Yosemite International Airport, The Arc, TSA, Delta Global Services and Hewlett Packard, the event provided individuals with autism or other intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families the opportunity to prepare for air travel in a real-life environment. While this special flight never actually left the ground, the children …got a first-hand look at what to expect at the airport and on an aircraft, helping to alleviate the stress they may feel when travelling.
>
> Many thanks to the SkyWest people who volunteered countless hours of coordination and expertise to share their love of flying and provide …memories that will last a lifetime!..
