Hi Mr Scrunge I appreciate the response and will keep your opinion in mind when posting 🙂

The subject of recent posts has mainly been on Autism-related events and organisations in the American state of Ohio.

Across the Atlantic, _Autism Support Angus & Dundee_, is a Scotland, United Kingdom based nonprofit where individuals affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders, including children, could share hopes, dreams, problems, questions and achievements. They share information, approaches and even jokes with each other…

> [@](#):
>
> Kindhearted carnival organisers in Dundee have been praised for opening their attraction specifically for autistic children and their parents.
> Loud music was turned off, entry was limited strictly to families with additional needs, and free candy floss was handed out to visitors as part of the special event.
> Following the success of the visit, [the] generous owners …are now pledging to open the fair to children with autism or other special needs again on Wednesday.
> Mum-of-three Farrah MacKenzie, from Autism Support Angus and Dundee (ASAD), said she was ‘totally indebted’ to him for providing the fun family day out.
> “It’s such an amazing thing to do,” she said.
> "For a big business to open it for children with huge issues, to let them use all the play equipment completely free of charge is just incredible.
> "It was all at his own cost – we never paid a single thing. He opened early to let the kids have a go at the rides – he gave them free candy floss on the way out. They even turned the music off so the kids could enjoy it.
>
> …“It has made a lot of children really happy.”
> Kered Horne, who runs the Inflatable Adventure Park, said she had been pleased that the children had enjoyed using the play equipment.
> “It’s the first time we’ve done it, but we will definitely start to do it more regularly,” she said.
> "I have friends who have children with autism, and I know how difficult it can be.
> "Usually when the festival comes it is too big and too noisy for children with autism, so we wanted to provide them a way of getting in.
> “It’s great to see the children having fun and enjoying it.”
> Around 40 children and their families attended the event, which was organised at short notice, so Farrah hopes more people will be able to make it along to the next sessions, which run between 10.45-11.45am and 6-7pm on Wednesday…

The popular Saturday morning program will continue to provide families with children on the autism spectrum the opportunity to explore the Science Center before doors open to the public free of charge through December 2016.
> For many children on the autism spectrum, a typical day at the Science Center can be overwhelming, and nearly impossible to visit with heavy crowds, loud noises, bright lights and visual stimulation from exhibits. With the continued support of Safeco Insurance, each month these families will continue to have the opportunity to enjoy the Science Center at their own pace, two hours before the Science Center opens to the public.
> In addition to opening our doors early one Saturday a month, softening lighting and decreasing exhibits’ sensory stimulation, Pacific Science Center will build on this year’s inclusivity training through a program conducted by Partners for Youth with Disabilities (PYD). Earlier this year, Pacific Science Center trained 250 staff to assist guests who have disablities; frontline staff also received in-depth training around autism spectrum disorder. Pacific Science Center will also work with PYD and focus groups to evaluate the exhibit experience for guests with low or no vision and prototype some ways to make our exhibit space more inviting for them.
> “Safeco Insurance and Liberty Mutual are proud to continue to support a program that allows people of all abilities to experience community assets such as Pacific Science Center,” said [the] program officer for the Liberty Mutual Foundation and manager of the Safeco Insurance Fund. “Regardless of ability, people are inspired when they come to Pacific Science Center, and that is an opportunity that everyone deserves.”

Hi Mr Scrunge I appreciate the response and will keep your opinion in mind when posting 🙂

The subject of recent posts has mainly been on Autism-related events and organisations in the state of Ohio.

To the east, _BluePath_ is a Hopewell Junction, New York-based nonprofit that provides Autism service dogs, offering safety, companionship and opportunities for independence. The nonprofit wants to be a leader in Autism service dog provision…

> [@](#):
>
> JP, a Labrador retriever puppy, stopped calmly over a storm-grate in the middle of a Bronxville street on a recent afternoon, unfazed by the strange surface that might throw off other dogs. JP will need that cool under pressure when he becomes a service dog for a child with autism.
>
> He is one of 10 puppies who may hold the key to the future security and happiness of families with children with autism in Westchester and Rockland counties, and across the region.
>
> Volunteers are raising the puppies – nine Labrador retrievers and one golden retriever – in homes throughout the area.
>
> …Once matured, the dogs can prevent autistic children from wandering off, which parents say is the difference between families living life or becoming virtual shut-ins…
>
> In her Bronxville home, Pat Carforo, the volunteer raising JP until he’s about 1 1/2 years old, fastened a BluePath vest onto him. Carforo walks him frequently and seeks out distractions – sirens wailing, a police officer’s radio, gawking school children – to get J.C. to the point where they no longer grab his attention. One result, she said, is he’s the dog about town.
>
> “I’'ll go for a walk and 'JP! JP! – everybody knows you – you’re like a rock star,” Carforo said of the 4 1/2-month-old.
>
> BluePath started in December…
>
> …BluePath’s leadership is mostly from Westchester County, while its offices are in Hopewell Junction. A BluePath service dog costs about $13,000, but BluePath will assist families in fundraising efforts, Brier said.
>
> BluePath’s mission for the moment is to raise and train the puppies and to raise money. On May 20, BluePath will hold its first annual walk-a-thon fundraiser …in Yorktown…
>
> The nonprofit draws its name from the blue vests that autism service dogs tend to wear, [said Michelle Brier, vice-president of marketing and development at BluePath.]. She said the reason BluePath picked Labrador and golden retrievers is they tend to be highly trainable, motivated and adaptable.
>
> “They have the temperament we look for,” she said.
>
> A volunteer takes in a puppy that’s perhaps 8 weeks old.
>
> “During that time, they (teach) the dog how to have good behavior in the house; they teach obedience skills – some are more related to the type of work that they’ll do later on,” Brier said.
>
> After the dogs turn 16 to 18 months old, the volunteers turn them over to BluePath’s training staff.
>
> “It’s at that point that the dog learns the very, very special skills that he or she will need to know in order to work for child,” Brier said.
>
> BluePath does not at this point have a kennel facility, but the training is largely about taking the dogs out into the world until they master the skills needed for the role with a family.
>
> An important one is “anchoring,” where a service dog can keep a child from wandering or bolting. A dog usually wears a leash for a parent to hold and a tether for a child to hold. Brier said different dogs anchor differently. One may lock all four feet, while another dog may lie down and still another may sit.
>
> “These wandering behaviors are incredibly frightening for parents,” Brier said.
>
> A parent might naturally express panic toward a child, which can increase the anxiety in a situation.
>
> But a service dog’s anchoring position is “such an emotionless response” that calms things down, Brier said.
>
> Children with autism are also severely bothered by sensory issues – a loud noise or a texture, for instance.
>
> “One of the things that the dogs often do is just gently rest their head on a child’s leg or against the child’s side – and that can so greatly reduce anxiety,” Brier said. “It’s a pretty amazing benefit of the dog.”
>
> Because many of the dogs will accompany the children at schools, BluePath will help get the dogs acquainted with a given school and teach faculty what they need to know.
>
> …In Bronxville, JP’s puppy feet made calm work of some of the village’s storybook downtown. Brier said he’s ahead of the curve for his age.
>
> Carforo, who retired as an Ossining special-education teacher, said one of her students had a service dog. Over the years, the trainer would come into the classroom with a dog or dogs to show students. She decided she wanted to raise service dogs…

Parents will have the opportunity to meet the needs of their children without having two to three appointments a week at different locations, this streamline service delivery, offers increased accountability and consistency with treatment progress. Students will benefit from a specialized autism curriculum that emphasizes development across skill domains, e.g. communication, socialization and behavior. Hi Mr Scrunge I appreciate the response and will keep your opinion in mind when posting 🙂

The subject of recent posts has mainly been on Autism-related events and organisations in the state of Ohio.

To the south, the _Mosaic Child Care Center_ is a San Angelo, Texas-based nonprofit that _s_erves over children, ages 6 weeks to 5 years, in an integrated and therapeutic environment. The _Center_ offers services valuable for children with and without various challenges, including those with Autism Spectrum Disorders…

> [@](#):
>
> …Today is World Autism Awareness Day. Mosaic serves many people with autism, a demographic that is growing, largely due to better diagnosis. That’s a good thing: better diagnosis means the people who need help are getting it.
> Mosaic works to provide personalized services, finding the unique blend of supports an individual needs. Among people with autism, finding that personalized support is essential. It is called Autism Spectrum Disorder because of the wide range in the type of behaviors and symptoms people with autism experience.
> JD loves to be social; he’s a pretty happy-go-lucky guy. But when he came into services at Mosaic, he took off running whenever he could. I can vividly picture staff members …chasing after a healthy–and fast–teenager.
> But instead of seeing this as a problem, staff members were able to find an alternative that not only affected that behavior, but helped JD find new interests. They approached the junior ROTC in his high school. JD joined, and became a proud member. ROTC helped change his behaviors and today, his running is channeled into Special Olympics and other activities he enjoys.
>
> Cassi’s mom struggled to find a place where her daughter could receive daycare. She was asked to leave several daycares before finding Mosaic’s integrated …Center in San Angelo, Texas.
>
> …Mosaic’s childcare center is an integrated daycare for children with and without disabilities. And everyone benefits–the center is bursting at the seams and has a waiting list.
> The wide spectrum of behaviors associated with autism require a wide spectrum of personalized supports. It challenges Mosaic staff to be creative. But everyone benefits–JD, Cassi and hundreds of others.

On the other side of the world, the _AEIOU Foundation_ is a Woolloongabba, Queensland, Australia based nonprofit whose mission is to enhance the lives of children with autism and their families and benefit the community though early intervention learning, along with practical and caring support…

> [@](#):
>
> The Queensland-based AEIOU Foundation is opening its first South Australian autism-specific early intervention centre on October 7.
> It will offer support, education and therapy for preschool aged children.
> AEIOU Foundation chief executive Alan Smith said the not-for-profit organisation chose to open a centre in the south because there was a need in the area.
> ?The prevalence of autism in the community is high,? Mr Smith said.
> Its opening comes after the _Southern Times Messenger_ backed a community campaign for a special needs school to be built in the area.
> Mr Smith said such a school would complement the programs offered at the new centre.
> ?It would be another arm of the work we already do,? he said.
> **TELL US BELOW: Do you think there is enough support for children with autism?**
> The Huntfield Heights centre will open up with 20 placements, depending on whether parents chose to enrol their child on a part-time of full-time basis.
> Mr Smith said the centre was likely to triple the number of spaces available in the next 12 months.
> He said children needed to be assessed under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) before they could apply for a place at the centre.
> The programs are run by a specially trained teacher with three support aids, a speech pathologist and occupational therapist.
> Mr Smith said 77 per cent of children who completed AEIOU’s program transitioned into a mainstream school with ?little or no? assistance.
> ?We know our program works because it is underpinned with research that backs up our success,? he said.
> ?There is an urgent need for quality education and therapy support across the country, and in the southern suburbs of Adelaide is no different.?
> The _Special School for the South_ campaign was started after Port Noarlunga teenager Kelsey Walker, 17, started a petition in July calling on the State Government to build a school for special needs students…
>
> The nearest special school is at Park Holme and many parents travel as far as Kidman Park to ensure their child receives proper care and education.
> Kelsey said the AEIOU Foundation’s centre would help her campaign.
>
> ?It will still help a few kids in the south but there is still a growing need for older kids,? she said.
> ?Families need the support of a special school now.?
> The AEIOU service will operate from its Lindisfarne Rd, Huntfield Heights, home until its permanent home is built at Minda’s Brighton site, likely to be open next year.

The subject of recent posts has mainly been on Autism-related events and organisations in the state of Ohio.

To the south, the _Turn Center_ is an Amarillo, Texas-based private, non-profit dedicated to providing occupational, physical, and speech/feeding therapies to children from birth. This includes children with various challenges, including Autism Spectrum Disorders…

> [@](#):
>
> It’s a scene familiar to most parents: A young child splashes in a shallow indoor pool, smiling. He floats an arm’s length from a very patient young woman, who speaks to him in a calm, gentle voice.
>
> At first glance, it could easily be a quiet moment in a swim lesson, a rite of passage for countless Amarillo kids.
>
> Then you see the woman hand the child a ball. You hear her give him a set of instructions. “I need you to get this toy and throw it through the hoop,” she says. “Then, swim to the other side of the pool and do 10 jumping jacks.”
>
> Tentatively, the boy takes the ball and attempts to follow the sequence. In the process, you realize he already knows how to swim – and these aren’t any kind of swim lessons you’ve ever seen.
>
> That’s because you’re at the Turn Center in Amarillo, and you’re watching a patient go through a groundbreaking 10-week aquatics intervention. He’s a participant in a clinical trial about the benefits of aquatic therapy for children with autism. Nationally, it’s the first trial of its kind, and its results may transform the way kids like him are treated in a therapeutic setting.
>
> …says Executive Director Bruce Moseley. “Last year, we provided therapy to 1,307 children in the [region]…”
>
> These patients come to Turn Center from all over the [region], sometimes driving for two hours to receive one hour of therapy. Some have been diagnosed with autism. Others have [various other challenges.] All of them were referred by a physician.
>
> Many for-profit therapy centers exist in the [region], but Turn Center is the only nonprofit. “That means we never turn away a child for inability to pay,” says Moseley, who leads a team of 34 licensed therapists. “Families have moved here from big cities to work at Xcel or Pantex or WT, and say there’s nothing like this where they came from. This really is special that we have this place dedicated for children.”
>
> After installing a therapy pool in March 2017, the therapists at Turn Center …wondered if it might also be useful for treating children with autism…
>
> …Moseley remains passionate about the work he sees on a daily basis at Turn Center. A former attorney and litigator who previously oversaw the legal studies and business departments at Amarillo College, Moseley switched to a nonprofit career because the work of Turn Center elicited in him an emotional response he couldn’t ignore. “It’s the greatest thing I’ve ever done,” he says of his career change. “I tell people a lot that I can’t even hypothetically think of a more rewarding place to work. I get to feel all day, every day that the things we do are really impactful and really needed. This place is truly magical.”
>
> So much of that magic is occurring right now in Turn Center’s pool, and this month, physical therapists from around the world will learn how they can begin to replicate that magic. “We’ve seen outcomes that I couldn’t have ever predicted,” Moseley says.
>
> But, then again, who could have predicted that a children’s therapy nonprofit in Amarillo, Texas, would become a leading voice on treating autism? Who could have predicted that a physical therapist, a former lawyer, and an eye surgeon would team up to make it happen?
>
> Maybe no one. But when the magic happens, you don’t shrug it off. You study it. You test it. You crunch the numbers and look at the outcomes. And then you share that magic to help make the world a better place.

Hi Mr Scrunge I appreciate the response and will keep your opinion in mind when posting 🙂

The subject of recent posts has mainly been on Autism-related events and organisations in the state of Ohio.

To the southwest, _Autism Services Center_ (_ASC_) is a Huntington, West Virginia-based nonprofit, licensed behavioral health center providing Medicaid Waiver services to Cabell, Wayne, Lincoln, Putnam and Mason counties. _ASC_ also provides Applied Behavior Analysis therapy…

> The 15th annual Rally for Autism was held …in Huntington and may have been the most exciting year so far. We are constantly challenging ourselves to find new ways to expand this event, make it enjoyable and interesting for the participants, and bring our goals and commitment to the attention of the public.
> As in past years, we had a pancake breakfast a week or so prior to the event, and a t-shirt contest leading up to the Rally.
> We were also fortunate this year to have Michael Tolleson, an artist with Asperger’s Syndrome, do a painting at the Rally which was then raffled off.
> Some of the changes we incorporated this year were:
>
> - In addition to the …bike [event] for those avid and experienced bike riders, we added a shorter …bike [event] to appeal to families.
> - More and more young people are showing an interest in participating in the run, so we’ve added a couple of categories to allow them the opportunity to compete against others in their own age group and perhaps win a prize. The new categories were 10 years old and younger, and 11 to 14 years old. The other categories remained the same as in previous years.
>
> But the most exciting change this year was the renaming of the [event] to the ‘Ruth Sullivan Rally for Autism’ in recognition of the instrumental role Ruth C. Sullivan, Ph.D. played in the establishment of all three local entities that benefit from the Rally and her livelong work in the field of autism. A new logo commemorating the change was also unveiled.
> We had 1,364 registered participants and once again we exceeded the numbers from the previous year. The [event] is always totally staffed by volunteers and 100% of the profits benefit our three local autism organizations: The Autism Society River Cities, Autism Services Center, and the West Virginia Autism Training Center…
> We hope you will join us again at next year’s [event]…
