Hi Mr Scrunge I appreciate the response and will keep your opinion in mind when posting 🙂

The subject of recent posts has mainly been on Autism-related events and organisations in the state of Ohio.

To the southeast, _Behavioral Family Solutions, LLC._ is a Miami, Florida-based private agency with experience in providing the highest quality therapeutic services to children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. The private agency hosts a booth at the annual Miami walk for _Autism Speaks_, North Ameria’s leading Autism science and advocacy nonprofit organisation…

> [@](#):
>
> The Autism Speaks walk will be held at the Doral Central Park on April 10 as part of Autism Awareness Month.

>
> “I think it’s a very positive thing. It has been a great cause,” said Gaby Lopez, 20, who has a younger brother …with autism.
>
> …Her father is a walk committee member and a co-chair for Autism Speaks.
>
> “I think the positive effect is that we’ve been able to raise a lot of money just to fund more research about autism,” Gaby Lopez said. “If it wasn’t for Autism Speaks, we wouldn’t have the resources to help with this challenge that these children face.”
>
> Doral Councilwoman Sandra Ruiz is very involved with Autism Speaks and was named Autism Champion, an honorary position given by the organization for this year’s walk.
>
> Ruiz states that it’s important to bring awareness about autism.
>
> “What it means to the city of Doral is the opportunity to co-sponsor and bring awareness of autism to the community,” Ruiz said. “It’s an opportunity for others to join both have been impacted and individuals to support and to tell these families that they are not alone.”
>
> “By raising awareness, it takes the shame out of the shadow,” added Evan Owen, communications and protocol manager for the city of Doral.
>
> The Doral City Council supported the event and, according to Ruiz, is working to making this an annual event in the city of Doral and part of the city budget…

To the east, _Western New York Adaptive Watersports_ is a nonprofit that offers (All adaptive) Scuba Diving, Fishing, Water Ski, and Sailing and we are working on Kayaking including for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders…

> Taylor Dunford, who is 17 and on the autism spectrum, went kayaking when she was a little girl. So the chance to paddle out in a tandem kayak with her father …seemed to please the teenager. She splashed her hands in the water as soon as she settled into the craft.
>
> …Sam and the Dunfords were among the half-dozen kayakers who took advantage of 80-degree weather, bright sunshine and a steady breeze to enjoy the water of Green Lake in Orchard Park at Sunday’s …Adaptive Kayaking activity. Western New York Adaptive Water Sports and Orchard Park Recreation helped put on the event.

Hi Mr Scrunge I appreciate the response and will keep your opinion in mind when posting 🙂

The subject of recent posts has mainly been on Autism-related events and organisations in the state of Ohio.

To the southeast, _Face Autism, Inc._ is a Tampa Bay area, Florida-based nonprofit committed to providing sensory friendly activities, support groups, referrals for therapeutic services, structured classes and other necessary resources for children with autism. This is in order to significantly improve and maintain a balanced quality of life…

> [@](#):
>
> “Mr. Don” urges two distracted children to dip fingers into the bowl of flour-and-water paste between them.
>
> “You need to be close to share,” he reminds them.
>
> They are supposed to be gluing newspaper strips to a balloon held by an adult, but have trouble seeing the point of the task and seem ready to spring away from the table at any moment. So Don Boulanger, a pediatric occupational therapist, gently herds eight young minds and bodies through the challenge of sitting still and making something together.
>
> “I like how you’re sticking with it,” he says.
>
> For most children, a lesson in social skills starts with ‘please’ and ‘thank you.’ But for the quiet, watchful [children from the age of 7] who attend this weekly class at Children’s Therapy Associates in Bradenton, it is more about taking turns on an obstacle course, making eye contact when tossing a ball and not shrinking from the touch of papier-mache or another child’s hand.
>
> The free class is sponsored by Face Autism, and designed for young people who have to put a lot of effort into a simple hello.
>
> …Colleen Buccieri’s godson Jordan Soriano, 11, a tall and gentle boy who beams throughout the one-hour class, inspired Face Autism. Seeing few resources for parents in this area, she started a tiny but busy collective that offers free screenings for children from 18 months to 4 years, recommends doctors and specialists, and generally helps families affected by autism feel less alone.
>
> Marina Manjarrez, 8, is on her second journey through the three-month course that her mother Vikki says ‘changed her life.’
>
> …“Normally, she would not go into a group situation at all,” Manjarrez says. “Now she’s braver, and trying new things.”
>
> Manjarrez and Robin Henderson perch on chairs on the play area’s edge, watching their daughters gently pummel each other with big, pink pillows. Because boys are three to four times more likely to be autistic, Henderson says, she was grateful when the girls found each other in class.
>
> Marina “woke up this morning looking for Alexandra,” says Manjarrez. “Of course, when she sees her she has a hard time saying anything to her.”
>
> Guiding the children through ever-changing activities, Boulanger and his fellow therapists remind them to say each other’s names, take turns and even hold hands. The way they process sensory information – a loud noise, or the feel of their own clothing – makes that difficult.
>
> “They need to control everything that’s happening in their world, because they have so much anxiety and uncertainty,” he said.
>
> But just getting through a craft session without a lot of hand washing can make regular school painful for a child with autism.
>
> “Most are what we call tactilely defensive,” said Boulanger. “They have a tough time with messy mediums…”

> Well over 700 people came out to [support three local nonprofits including the Autism Society of Washington, Spokane] – collectively the Steps for Autism Committee.
>
> What was predicted as a windy, cool, and overcast day turned in to a balmy Spring afternoon, gracing participants with bright sunshine, light breezes, and temperatures in the 60s after 11am.
> This year’s event was held at a more central location… The walk route took participants along the north bank of the river, headed east toward the Don Kardong Bridge, where they returned along the south bank to the pedestrian bridge from the Convention Center grounds to the park.
> …with multiple re-routes due to the Riverfront redesign project, we were happy to just be able to have the walk happen.
> The location was also a great place for our vendors. Booths lined the sunny ‘Marmot Meadow’ right next to the river (with a sturdy fence providing safety) and families were able to watch their children playing Sidewalk Games …while they browsed the services available.
> This year’s walk t-shirt was a much bigger hit than expected, and a second order for shirts had to be placed!
> …A BIG ‘Thank You!’ to everyone who volunteered, walked and fundraised…

> _Jump Autism Support_ co-founder Emma Thorpe commented: "We’re absolutely delighted to receive support from …the [Gaelic Players Association] and it was wonderful to have star players visit one of our camps and interact with the children. We do not invest any of our resources into promotion as we believe it is best to put 100 percent of our funding into enriching the lives of the children so it is great to have the [Gaelic Players Association] on board to help raise awareness for what we do.
> "_Jump Autism Support_] started with a Summer Camp with close to a 1:1 ratio of qualified staff to children. It was an innovative design which focused on fun child friendly activities with every opportunity taken to expose the children to new experiences like sports and music. We have also run numerous social skills groups with the help of experienced Speech and Language and Play therapists. These groups are very important in developing play and social skills while supported in an understanding environment.
> “Our services are constantly oversubscribed so the next step for _Jump Autism Support_] is securing premises of our own – this will allow for more capacity and flexibility in what we provide. Everyone involved in the organisation works in a voluntary capacity supported by a wonderful group of parents who have come together to help and work towards creating better services for their children.”

> “It gives her freedom,” said Kenesha Thompson, mother.
> A fresh chance to prove everyone wrong.
> Six-year-old Zoe Thompson is learning to skate and her mother cannot believe it. Among other things, Zoe has autism.
> “A given month, she’s typically sick two weeks out of the month,” Thompson said. “My daughter is non-verbal. So, she doesn’t talk. But when she’s on the ice, it’s like she’s speaking a language and I understand it.”
> The translation happens at Sobe Ice Arena every few weeks.

In her spare time, she runs …a program that allows children with autism and [various other challenges] a chance to try something new, to be social, to push their own boundaries and to succeed.
> “I want to show that, these kids can do so many things,” Quinney said. “They just have this pre-conceived notion in their minds where, they expect the kids are only capable of so much. We’re hoping to change that.”
> “Aubrey has autism,” said Rachel Gwin.
> For Rachel Gwin, learning to skate helps her as much as it helps her 5-year-old daughter.
> “Some days, when they’re around typical kids, it’s easier to see the things they’re lacking,” she said. “Don’t underestimate these kids, they have a lot more potential than you give them credit for.”
> Quinney has run the program for about a year. Recently, it’s become more popular. She buys the ice time and coaches for free. It’s a sign of how much she loves being with these children.
> “Well, we could use some sponsorships,” she admits.
> But what she really wants is to grow because it’s working.
> “This is not something most people expect autistic kids to do and I didn’t either,” she said.
> “To take something that’s so extremely difficult for most people and to have the children do this…” Thompson said. “For me, it’s me saying to the world, she can.”
> Right now, Quinney is putting together a choreographed winter skate with the children.
