I know that most of us are probably a little grossed out by the thought that we have glands in our anus much like every other mammal. Other mammals use it to mark their territory, attract mates, ward off rivals and even in defense (skunk). Here’s the one paper I was able to find on this topic:

[https://kb.osu.edu/dspace/bitstream/handle/1811/4757/v61n02\_065.pdf?sequence=1](https://kb.osu.edu/dspace/bitstream/handle/1811/4757/v61n02_065.pdf?sequence=1)

Though largely considered to have no current purpose. I imagine our ancestors may have expressed these glands with their fingers and then wiping it on personal belongings or territory.

I’m embarrassed to admit it but after a shower I expressed and tested my own anal glands. It doesn’t smell like poo so much as it smells like very strong body odor. I’m wondering what is in there.

I’m only assuming that they contain sex pheremones. Does anyone know?

Not gonna do it. Nope, sorry.

“Confucious say: He that go to bed with itchy butt, wake up in morning with stinky finger…”

My initial thoughts were that you could be rather on your own with this one! 😮

However, the apocrine glands around the human anus are IIRC very similar to those clustered on other parts of the body, so presumably their secretions will e somewhat similar too.

Most of the scent is actually produced by bacterial decomposition of these near scentless secretions, so any differences there probably say more about the nature of your individual arse-flora and the cosseted and more bacterially active nature of the location rather than any major differences in the secretions across the body. In ancient, more exposed and windblown times, things might have been rather different scent-wise?

And careful with that “expressing” - The types and levels of bacteria in this area are rather full-on and it is very easy to trigger a perianal abscess - Which can be rather nasty.
