Androstenone:
[Pig pheromone proves useful in curtailing bad behavior in dogs – ScienceDaily](http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/08/140824213155.htm)

John McGlone, a professor at Texas Tech, discovers Androstenone can stop dogs from barking, jumping.

McGlone had four different groups of barking dogs in separate kennels. The first group of dogs simply had a person with another dog stand in front of the kennels. The second group of dogs was sprayed with a placebo that made the startling, spritz noise. The third group of dogs was sprayed with the noise and a lower concentration (.01 mcg/mL) of androstenone in isopropyl alcohol. The fourth group was sprayed with a higher concentration (1.0 mcg/mL) of androstenone in isopropyl alcohol that also made the spritz sound.

In the first group, 25 percent (3 out of 12 dogs) stopped barking. In the second group, 44 percent (4 of 9 dogs) stopped barking. In the third group, sprayed with the lower concentration of the [pheromone](https://a314.com/shop/), 78 percent (7 of 9 dogs) stopped barking. In the fourth group, sprayed with the higher concentration of androstenone, 100 percent (6 of 6 dogs) stopped barking.
“We sprayed it in their nose or toward their head while they were barking ? barking and jumping, running back and forth,” McGlone said. “This whole behavior stopped. You could almost see them thinking, ‘What was that?’”

Question: What is the ml of solution per spray used in the study? I couldn’t find that. - lwatkins

Nice study, and from the great state of texas. right on.

as we all know, dogs have the pact mentality, essentially following the alpha.

interesting that they didn’t include the final spray concentration…

edit:

i started digging as much as i could for the information, because research is my cup of tea.. but i only found this, which i’m sure has the answer but needs to be paid for

Dog appeasing [pheromones](https://a314.com/shop/) are used in Australia to help with separation anxiety and excessive barking problems. I use it with my sighthound to calm her down during stressful times such as car rides and bin day (she hates the rubbish truck even when it is several blocks from the house.)
I have not been able to find out what exactly is in this dog appeasing pheromone, does anyone else know? Brand name of the one i use is Adaptil \*Pheromone.
