Well, if the title didn’t scare ya away…

I know there’s a few of you here who are into meditation and/or hypnosis and/or NLP. Well, I use meditation and some self-hypnosis as a way of managing stress, and one of the things I’ve done is anchor a theta brainwave state. I’ve been using binaural beats to get to these states, but I find that it’s not always convenient for me to spend the 10 minutes or so it takes to listen to a track that takes me down.

I decided that for on-the-spot use, I’d anchor a calm, high theta state to a finger position that I could call upon whenever a stressful situation came about. I did it 5 times per session for 3 sessions spread over 2 days, and now I can fire off the anchor and be instantly calm.

Even though it _felt_ like I was in a calmer state, part of me wondered if I was just fooling myself. You can’t really argue with a feeling; I mean, I DO feel calmer and more able to sort things out when I fire the anchor, but recently I had the opportunity to get some biofeedback in real time.

A week before my surgery, I had a pre-op appointment, where some blood tests were done, and they also did an EKG. Even though EKGs are heart measuring tests rather than brainwaves, I figured SOMEthing had to show. So, I asked the nurse to let me know if there was a noticeable change in my heart rate as of… right… now (firing the anchor). She immediately said “Wow, there was. Your heart rate went down 12 bpm instantly. What did you do?” I explained that I did some breathing exercises, and she seemed pretty impressed. So was I. In fact, that was probably the coolest thing to happen to me in some time.

Just thought I’d share for those interested in this kind of thing.

Wow. That is awesome. Seriously. I’ll need to start trying this for real.

Do you anchor right when you enter your desired state? Throughout the duration of the desired state? Err..maybe just a handful of leads, or more details on what you did? I’ve always read about it kinda in theory, never heard of someone actually getting biofeedback on it.

Well, what I do is make my own binaural beat mp3s, that include suggestions I record. At about 10 minutes into the desired state, I instruct myself to anchor the state by touching my right thumb and middle finger while picturing a specific image. I then make the suggestion that whenever I do that, I will enter the same state. Like I said, I repeated the process 5 times in the session, then listened to it 3 times over a couple of days. I’ll probably listen to it a couple more times soon to refresh it.

Any more questions, clarification on anything, feel free to ask. I’m certainly no expert in it, but I find the whole thing so fascinating, I love sharing about it. Unfortunately, a lot of people roll their eyes and write me off as some sort of new age weirdo, when what I’m doing is based more on science than metaphysics.

Phya, you might like this. It’s a proof of concept I put together of a storytelling hypnotic induction using NLP ambiguities and immersive sound effects. There are no binaural beats in it, however, I may put one of my relax tracks up. This is a LOT more fancy than the stuff I make for my own use. Anyway, it’s about 10 minutes long and is best listened to in a dimly lit room through stereo headphones. Tell me what you think!

REALLY good stuff! I just wish I had listened to this in the morning ..instead of at 4 am before I was supposed to sleep! I actually feel refreshed and doing something really constructive right now.. maybe catch up on some pathology.

Please do put up more of these! Are there ones that are geared more toward motivation to study or even inner confidence boosters? If so, where can I purchase these? :-x

Hehe, Thanks! I can’t sell that one, since I don’t own rights to the music. Like I said, I did it as a proof of concept for the induction alone, but realized I’d better throw in something useful and a pathway towards coming out of trance before I shared it with anyone. General confidence seemed like a useful thing to do, even though it’s really short. But hey, I’m glad you got a positive experience out of it!

I don’t really intend to sell any of them, since I’d feel weird making claims that it’ll do this or that, and then have to deal with people paying money being dissatisfied. For now, it’s just a hobby that’s 75% for my own benefit and 25% “what the hell? If it works for you, awesome!”.

Most of the things I’ve made are in the theme of calming down, lowering stress levels, and a positive outlook. I’m diagnosed as clinically depressive, though I’m fighting that label tooth and nail, so again, it’s mainly to help me fight that. So far it’s really working for me, in conjunction with some meds. The goal of course is to get rid of the meds and train myself in more holistic ways of dealing with the crap that comes my way now and again.

I’ll go through my library and see if there’s anything else I’ve got that fellow forum members might benefit from and put it up. And just to make sure my bases are covered, none of this stuff is meant to diagnose or treat any illness, and no promises are made, implied, or even slightly hinted at. 😉

Thanks D4! I’ll check it out when I get home. I’m at work right now and I really don’t feel like explaining what I’m doing - not because I’d get in trouble, but I think I’d be met with a bunch of glazed over eyes going huh? 🙂

I’ll look more into it, I’m using Glauberman’s stuff right now and I like it, but I’d like to be able to anchor stuff for my own use. I say, an erection on command could be useful later in life…something like 40 years for me. I kid. 😃

LOL! In all seriousness, since that’s physiology that responds to psychological stimulus as much as physical, I really can’t see any reason why an erection couldn’t be anchored, barring any physical roadblocks such as diabetes, lack of a penis, etc.

Speaking of Glauberman, my cds just came in the mail. I’ll be trying out the ACE and Money, Wealth, and Prosperity cds. 😃 ACE comes first, I wanna see if body control changes can come about. 😃

Really? Glauberman was recommended by Tacitus, and SteveO also has experience with his work. I’ve only tried Personal Ecology, but I liked it enough to consider trying two more cds.

Well, I usually just check out the Men’s forum here, but since I’m off for a couple of weeks, I’ve only just recently been able to give the whole place a good looking through. It’s a good thing, too. I’m finding good nuggets of info everywhere!

Interesting experience. I have never had a medical person comment on my physiologic response to self-hypnosis/meditation. I do not regularly practice both, honestly- it is an occassional thing I have experimented with, and typicly I go back to trance/meditation/hypnosis at a time of increased stress and I feel like things are starting to get out of control.

Years, and years ago I used to just listen to music, and focus on my breathing. If my mind started to wander away from the music to other thoughts- I would just try and bring it back to the music. It did bring results. Debussy is excellent music for this purpose, BTW, because it has a slow, languid beat and the emotional sentiment is impressionistic, not manipulative. In fact, going to college I would sometimes do this on the bus and occasionally miss a stop 🙂

A couple months ago I had alot of problems getting to sleep, and I found myself learning to focus on “nothing”. Taking your mind and recentering it on nothing, or failing that, something more pleasant that doesn’t cause anxiety. It does work.

I’ve also experienced guided hypnosis by a therapist as well as self-hypnosis using visual/audio suggestions. Very cool and trippy, and really makes you relax.

I also have experience with some Naikan meditation practices, as well as some Buddhist meditations. These aren’t necessarily focused on centering on brain states, but rather goals. Naikan is a very good non-religious meditation practice/reflection and helps you to put yourself in perspective and to remember to stop being self-centered. Unfortunately, the people who need Naikan the most will probably never use it until they hit rock bottom and find out about it… that’s the probelm with hypnosis, mostly you have to want to do it on some level or it does nothing (sort of like [pheromones](https://pheromonelabs.com/shop/)- it doesn’t alter a person’s “will”).

So I tried ACE last night. I felt really ‘soft, and cushy, verrry relaxed’ after my session last night. I could have practically gone to sleep right then and there. I didn’t though, stayed up for a bit, then went to sleep. Dropped right into sleep (as I usually do), but I woke up to my alarm, turned it off because I thought I was tired (as I usually am), tried to drift back to sleep, but couldn’t and got up within 20 minutes, relatively well rested. I noticed I’m more aware of my posture. But it’s only been one day, much too early to tell.

But I will say this, it’s like trying glauberman out for the first time all over again. There’s a definite change in tension. I can’t wait for lunch today. 😃 Got my headphones and ipod with me today.

So… would ACE be useful to someone who doesn’t play Golf? I.e., for general confidence boosting, getting into “the zone”, regardless of the context of the zone?

Glauberman’s HPP technique sounds a lot like the Paraliminal series put out by a guy named Paul Scheele, with the seperate tracks playing in each ear and all. I’ve used a few of Scheele’s CDs and they’re pretty good.

I’m uploading at RS right now, you’ll find out in a bit.

In the track I listened to today had the phrase along the lines of ‘this will help you not only in your golf game, but in all other aspect of your life as well’. Tells you things like ‘quiet your mind’ and ‘keeping rhythm’. I don’t play golf, so we’ll see.
