I just pulled this stuff out of the fridge (where I keep all my frag stash- it’s a seperate refrigerator and I just keep cokes, frags, and other things in it). It’s getting warmer here in Florida and I wanted to try this stuff out. I sprayed some on, sniffed it… and then it hit me… this stuff has alot of neroli in the top notes. I think it would blend perfectly with Androtics neroli-[scented pheromones](https://a314.com/product-category/scented/). It does have a bit of an aquatic, calone note however, but the base is masculine, if in a hip/trendy sort of way- it smells a bit like pepper and maybe oakmoss or vetiver with musk.

It’s a decent, inexpensive summer frag. I’m diluting it 50/50 with alcohol, though, just so I can get higher “resolution” as a cover scent and re-apply it more often.

Hmm… I wonder if calone has any pheromone-like properties? I always feel a bit different when exposed to it, very subtle but it is a different feeling. I cannot put my finger on it at all, it is sort of like the feeling of Instant Shine although much more subtle.

Certain essential oil scents have been shown to affect moods, and is the basis of aromatherapy. I haven’t delved too deep in the study, but I encourage you to do some google research on it. Used in conjunction with a site like [basenotes.com](http://basenotes.com), you can make some really informed buying decisions on a cologne, based on what a fragrance contains in the various levels.

I even thought about dabbling in essential oil mixes to create a truly unique fragrance for myself, but realized I didn’t have the time or money to devote to the experimentation required. A good person to talk to regarding how scents affect moods and behaviors would be DrSmellThis, the mad scientist behind Pheros (which is great stuff, btw. He’s posted here on occasion, but I think he’s more active at LS.

Aaaand… if this post seems disjointed, I apologize. I breathed when I should have swallowed, which sent me into a violent coughing fit about an hour ago. It hurt so bad that I had to take a dose of my oxycodone, which I’ve been trying to wean myself off of over the last couple of days. Suffice it to say, I’m quite… high. 😉

I just realized it could be a conditioned response, as well. The first Androtics pheromone I used was [Instant Shine](https://a314.com/product/shine/). This greatly complicates things. Still, I did notice a wierd buzzing feeling a year ago when I wore this stuff last.

I have always wondered about aromatherapy. I used to consider it baloney, but you know I started using a patchouli shave cream for a while, and I noticed… it really did make me feel energetic (now days I’m more a shave soap kind of person… Crabtree and Evelyn Sandalwood). I wouldn’t describe it quite the same as a pheromone, though- the effect seems different, and I admit it might have been self-suggestion. True pheromones seem to speak to the “mind” moreso than the body, whereas the response I was feeling from patchouli was more of a “body” sensation.

I have tried making my own colognes, actually. The closest I got was about like Kolnischwasser or Florida Water. Not very round at all, not as much staying power- you really need access to chemicals like linalool and synthetic musks/sandalwood/benzoin to make something well rounded. Actually this is how I got interested in pheromones, through experimenting with perfumery. They aren’t unrelated and knowledge in one is relevent to the other.

If you like the hippie vibe, Patchouli is a good essential oil to wear on its own. It lasts a long time and it’s relatively complex for a single oil.

I actually wear straight patchouli sometimes. It really can be very interesting. The best patchouli is aged, though, so it doesn’t smell quite as green. If you decide to ever try this, I recommend diluting the patchouli into jojoba oil before applying it (1-2 drops jojoba, 1 drop patchouli), as you might find that 1 drop is too much.

Other oils you can wear on their own are sandalwood, vetiver, or agarwood/oud. Again, the older it is, the better, assuming it’s real and not a synthetic (essential oils are never synthetic unless adulterated- fragrance oils almost always are synthetics). Also, some musks are fine to wear on their own, too.

Patchouli also goes well with lavender, if you want to create some extra interest and staying power, you can add a touch of benzoin, tonka bean, or vanilla, and dilute the final mix to about 30-50 percent strength.

Patchouli is actually very common in men’s fragrances, esp. older fragrances. Drakkar Noir has alot of patchouli in it. Now days vetiver is more common in newer fragrances, because it smells “clean” (it has a lemongrass or earthy smell, similar to neroli but less fruity/flowery and slighly darker). You’ld be surprised though that most fragrance mfgs use synthetics because they don’t like having to deal with sourcing different grades and ages of these scents.

Spambot.

BTW, the story I always heard was hippies liked patchouli because it hid the smell of marijuana. I think people just wanted to make up explanations about something they didn’t want to understand.

Another hippy smell would be Nag Champa, which is an Indian incense/fragrance made from sandalwood, resins, plumeria/frangipani flowers, and sometimes musk. The plumeria flowers impart a sweet, soft floral note similar to roses. If you’ve ever been to a Spencer’s novelty store years ago, you’ve smelled a faily soft version of Nag Champa. It’s also apparrently popular in India for incense.

I’ve actually got an Indian unisex perfume oil that smells very similar to Nag Champa, it’s not expensive and is called “Egyptian Musk” (I guess an Indian’s take on an Egyptian theme? It smells Indian to my nose, not Arab). I’ve never gotten any negative comments on it, yet, in fact I had somebody tell me it smelled nice 🙂 Also, there are plenty of nag champa perfume oils out there, though none of them you are going to find in a designer fragrance shop.

And of course, sandalwood is a great smell in itself, which is sort of like a rich, sweet, cedar type smell, and vaguely hippy and instantly recognizeable as “Asian”. Unfortunately, the real stuff is hard to get now days, and very expensive in the pure form. If you buy the essential oil at a healthfood store in the aromatherapy section, usually it’s Australian, natural, and diluted heavily. The Australian sandalwood is not as good as Mysore sandalwood, and IMO, somewhat inferior to synthetics in some ways.

Yes i used to import Mysore Sandalwood from India it was far superior to the ordinary stuff available in shops!..I loved that stuff.

Most export incense is far inferior to temple grade incense Nag Champa (the sai baba version and a few others), is one of the exceptions available in shops. Its not bad…

Oh thats right iv heard that it patchouli is used to cover Marijuana…then again it would cover anything its so strong…hippies often smell like old sweat and patchouli i think the scent of Marijuana would be preferable lol

That’s cool… what kind of business were you in?

Also, it’s my understanding that Mysore sandalwood trade is pretty much rotten now days, not enough real wood left, and lots of adulteration. It’s even worse than agarwood/oud. Cedar is a common adulterant. In fact even patchouli is adulterated sometimes, which is rather sad considering the real oil is so cheap.

I will remember to not wear patchouli around you, though, or at least not smell like a dirty hippy… which bugs you more ? 🙂

I got my mysore sandalwood from a site specializing in ‘puga’ items! They sell ‘rudraksha’ there too and they use that oil to condition it…the beads are considered to be sacred and they can be very expensive going onto the thousands!..ill pm you the site if you like 🙂

That would be cool to find that website if you have it.

Pure Australian sandalwood would also be nice, all I can usually find are diluted. I haven’t tried the Haitian sandalwoods yet, but it might be an interesting comparison. I have smelled some decent synthetics, too. In fact Firmenich now claims that their chemists have discovered some of their synthetic sandalwoods (santall etc.) have antibacterial properties similar to the real wood oil. I like using sandalwood scented soap in the shower, too, I buy it at Asian stores or healthfood stores, probably fake but it smells good.

I have been experimenting around with agarwoods (mostly burning, but also oils), but it seems every agarwood is so different. Plus, it’s super expensive. I have two different synthetic agarwoods and they both don’t exactly match any agarwood I have smelled before, although both are close to different woods. One smells like mushrooms and carrots and is very light and fresh for being almost a resin out of the bottle, the other smells like very soft sandalwood with a resinous component.

The Burmese, Indian, and Malaysian agarwood oils I’ve tried, though, are all over the place in terms of the smell. Most seem to have a dark, resiny sandalwood type smell, others are somewhat medicinal and clean. I’ve heard the really expensive Indonesian woods do indeed smell like airy earthy smells, so maybe that synthetic is close to some of the real ones.

In Buddhism, agarwood represents the transmutation of ignorance into knowledge. Sandalwood represents the transmutation of desire into contentment. And of course in ayurveda they both represent water elements. Just FYI, useless trivia. I’m full of that stuff 🙂
