When the mood of a society turns down as has happened since 1999, basic needs of security shift more into focus (at the expense of higher needs such as self-actualization). The media and politicians make political capital out of catering to these needs and fears. It is this way in every cycle. So one can expect a continued upswing in stories about the threat posed by foreign nations irrespective of the magnitude or basis of such potential threats.

Sometimes it can be informative to read the domestic media of less friendly nations to get a sense for their world view. The gap between self-perception and perception by another can be shocking, like seeing oneself in a fairground mirror.

Here’s a good documentary about the use of techniques of propaganda by the state and of marketing by large corporations

The classic on this topic is ‘Instincts of the Herd in Peace and War’ by Wilfred Trotter. Google books link here

Why should one care? The US and emerging nations (particularly China) are already, in some sense, engaged in a conflict over natural resources. We’re entering a new Malthusian era, with competition over access to oil, minerals and food. The Chinese are happier to deal with regimes the US prefers not to for reasons of foreign policy or human rights, considering such matters an issue for the people of the other nation.

As shortages become more acute and prices rise to clear markets, one can expect rhetoric to intensify. Even though anti-China rhetoric might be intended more as posturing by most mainstream politicians of today, rhetoric can have an unfortunate way of developing its own momentum.

why diversity can be a problem

[Gene Expression: Why diversity can be a problem](http://www.gnxp.com/blog/2008/09/why-diversity-can-be-problem.php)

“Last week there [were mass demonstrations](http://www.asiasentinel.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1412&Itemid=31) of Buddhists in South Korea against the religious parochialism of the current president, a Presbyterian elder. The president is already unpopular for other reasons, so I don’t personally believe that this unrest is a necessary outcome of religious tension. Rather, as documented in books such as [The Moral Consequences of Economic Growth](http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1400095719/geneexpressio-20), a social context where individuals feel under stress and insecure will often produce intergroup conflict. In an age of plenty there is elbow room between factions because of the growing pie, but when we smell the Malthusian trap in the air group level affinities come to the fore as you don’t want to become isolated as an individual without communal capital which you can leverage.”
