I will be creating a website about fast meals that taste great, buying bulk and proper storage techniques as well as college students learning to save their little money they have and learning to clip as well as find coupons to save $$$.

I love to cook, and I have about a good 40 recipes for main dishes not to mention what I have for baking…

I always wanted to learn how to cook and now that I’m living on my own, it’s a skill that I will need. Look forward to this.

djandariel,

I too love to cook.

I really like [Epicurious.com](http://Epicurious.com) and [SmittenKitchen.com](http://SmittenKitchen.com). I also love to look at [tastespotting.com](http://tastespotting.com).

Taibo,

Cooking can be learned without too much difficulty. You can learn basics and go on from there. There are a lot of books with the basics. [How to Cook Everything](http://www.amazon.com/How-Cook-Everything-Simple-Recipes/dp/0471789186) is a very good book.

I say go for it! I’ve been trying to talk myself into doing the same thing, but I generally second guess myself with websites. I even bought [420degrees.com/net/org](http://420degrees.com/net/org) in anticipation for starting a website based on ‘munchie’ foods, but haven’t done anything with it. Didn’t mean to hijack the thread or anything, but just wanted to let you know that you should definitely do it.

This is a wonderful idea, although there are a lot of them out there already. But I’d love to see what you come up with.

I love to cook. The kitchen is my home, my haven.
Nothing fancy, most of the time. Just good home cooking that doesn’t hurry in getting there, and is worth sitting down for. We have a family rule that no one misses dinner with the family unless there’s an emergency, schedule your activities around it. So it’s important to make food that they’re wanting to be present for.

I’ve never cooked anything in my life before except maybe eggs…it didn’t come out right but I still ate it because I put in that effort to cook it. I need kitchenware, what do I buy? I know I need knives, blades, pots, stoves, and something along the lines of those. I need suggestions.

Well, your cheapest option is IKEA, except for the stove. Start small, you don’t need a lot.

You can outfit a kitchen for \<$100 @IKEA.

I’m guessing one stove would be all you’d need. 😉 j/k

With eggs, do not cook them over high heat. They are delicate, and will scorch, stick to the pan or get crunchy if you cook them too hot.

Cooking can be done with the most basic equipment. You don’t really need all those gadgets out there. They make some things easier, but most cooking can be done with spoons and knives, and a few other basic things.

**Here are the utensils that I use most often:**
large spoon
slotted spoon
thin metal spatula
flexible spatula (for scraping out bowls)
wire whisk (indispensible)
vegetable peeler
tongs
can opener
colander (for draining pasta, potatoes, etc)
chef’s knife
paring knife
good cutting board (I have a butcher’s block built into my counter next to the stove.)

**You will definitely also need:**
mixing bowls
frying pan
saucepan
large kettle or stockpot
various pans for baking
potholders

**Others that are very handy, but I can do without:**
grater
garlic press
potato masher
biscuit cutter
rolling pin
and most everything else falls into this category too.

Seriously, you do not need to buy a lot.
I cook almost every meal that is consumed by my family of seven people. We eat out probably about once a month.
If $ is an issue, and for most of us it is, you can learn to make lots of tasty things for small amounts of cash spent. For seven people I spend under $100 each week, and that includes diapers, laundry detergent, paper goods, you name it.

Cooking at home is a hell of a lot cheaper and can be better if you make it that way.

If you make all your meals, then pounds don’t come sneaking up on you. If you add them, you know where they came from.

My fave thing cooking is deciding on a random ingredient that I want to eat - heading over to [recipes.com](http://recipes.com) and searching for meals based on that ingredient and going for it.

Taibo you don’t need much to cook

Get yourself and pot/pan set - yes quality matters and the more expensive options do produce better results. I prefer stainless to non-stick… but that is largely because you can get a quality stainless set much cheaper than a quality non-stick.

A cheapo non-stick IS NOT WORTH IT!!! You end up cooking food unevenly because the pans are all too thin, the non stick flakes… its a bad scene.

Get at least one good knife - the difference a quality knife makes on the time it takes to prepare is obscene. I spent 150$ on a nice chef’s knife and I spend 10$ every year or so to get it professionally sharpened… best investment ever.

-

Measuring utensils (1/8 cup, 1/4 cup, 1/3 cup, 1/2 cup, 1 cup + a tablespoon/teaspoon set)

a spatula (if you go stainless pot/pan get a metal spatula - they have a sharper edge and are flatter than the plastic ones… and they don’t melt ever)

a stirring spoon (wooden)

a wooden cutting board (plastic = crap IMO)

A spice rack is also enormously helpful - I have all my spices in a cupboard and it’s terrible.

Oh and some pyrex cookware (or the porcelain stuff) if you want to make casseroles.

I love to cook. I have a ton of recipes tucked away in my head and I’m always coming up with other ideas or different things to add to the mix.

Knowledge of flavoring agents (spices, sauces, etc) is a HUGE benefit.

I try to keep my cooking pretty simple… at least with the utensils I use. I’m a huge fan of cooking on an open flame (bbq).

Mmmm now I’m getting hungry =)

I still haven’t bought any kitchenware yet…someone tell me the “must haves” like a stove, pot, and a knife. Where should I buy them? IKEA is cheap stuff but then you guys say get the expensive ones which confuses me now.

Then what should be the first thing I try to cook? Eggs?
