Power to buy anything they like, power over other people who admire them for their achievements, power over women is just part of the entire package. It’s the “trophy wife” thingie.

I don’t know if you disagree so much as you’ve added.

Indeed, there’s probably a variety of motivations.

I have known some “accidental rich”, though, including some ex-Microsofties. Some were more concerned about being loved or stopping their parents from interfering in their lives, than they ever were about “power”.

I was financially successful in former life, and “power” never entered into my equation. Especially not power over people, I hate that. I don’t even like having a waiter or a waitress at a restaurant, as I figured they must have something better to do than “serve” me!

In my case, well… I was a workaholic. Probably as addicted to work and innovation as much as a heroine addict is addicting to jabbing evil into their arm. Occasionally being a workaholic earns you some success, but not always. Depends on the playing field and who you work for.

Richard Branson is no doubt the visionary type. If he’s after power at all, it’s the power to show stodgy old institutions how crusty and ineffective they are. The “power of mischief”

So it does indeed take all types.

What I’ve failed to run into are rich people who’ve earned their own money who are truly “bad people”. I’ve run into more never-do-wells (and on the rich side, trust fund babies) that qualify as poisonous people than the self-made successful. Scrooges are few and far between. (\* Okay, I guess lawyers would be an exception here, but not always - there’s a couple of nice ones there, too)
