Copulins [https://pheromonetalk.com/t/copulins/1601](https://pheromonetalk.com/t/copulins/1601)

**Im just wondering and thinking about copulins and why they exist. In this study it says** _" **Since copulins do more to enhance the appeal of women who aren’t stunning, in effect they decrease the importance of optical attractiveness and hence help level the playing field in the competition for men.",** _ perhaps they are used to level the playing field between “gorgeous women” who are desired by men, and the less attractive women.\*\*

Anyone have any ideas why copulins would be so important in men who often seem to look at females and make their mating decision based on visual appeal mostly?

Im just wondering what evolutionary advantage the secretion of copulins would provide and why males would bother evolving to detect them, perhaps its the beta males attempt to avoid a relationship with a female way above his leage, and instead look for the less appealing females and decide which one is most fertile. Or perhaps its used to figure out which female is worth impregnating (or attempting to) based on how close they are to ovulating.

Also I wonder if females also can detect copulins to help them guage if their partner has been faithful, alot of questions that is… Perhaps I can use copulins to improve my mood or increase my testosterone and make me hornier around females or sexual partners, sorta like viagra… When using [pheromones](https://a314.com/shop/), it would be cool to get some of the fun too and have both the man and woman geting aroused more.

I can’t go into a lot of detail about my thoughts on copulins as i’m pretty rushed at the moment, but from an evelutionary stand point, copulin help men know which female is most fertile. Because humans are hardwired to reproduce a high copulin production would lessen the importance of looks from a man persective because that particular female would be able to more easily be impregnated.

I don’t know how relevant this may be, but I read some study that said that men produce more sperm when they think that their women have had sex with someone else. This has been explained as an evolutionary mechanism designed to beat cuckholdry. It could possibly be explained through pheromones…

i do NOT know where you got that information from, but if you ever come across it,let me know.

i have never heard that but it was very interesting.

i bet pheromones do play a part here, but then i would guess they would “think cheating” if they smelled cheating, which might only be the female producing more copulins in response to another male,or her own? does he smell androstenone (hmm maybe not, she produces some) or 'rone where he shouldnt?

I have actually heard about that and I think read studies about that, although it was a while back and I dont remember where or the details about it.

I think this is from the book “Sperm Wars” by Robin Baker. One of the most interesting books I have ever read on this topic! Really enlightening about human sexual behavior, why and how we seek partners the way we do!
It doesn’t talk about copulins or pheromones though.

i bet knowing what we know, we could fill in the blanks (pheromone-info-wise) thank you i will check that out! 🙂

Most of the physical characteristics we find attractive in women are signs of fertility and good health. Copulins are excreted by females during ovulation to signal fertility = most probable opportunity to pregnant. Copulins are known to directly arouse males (raises testosterone levels) and illicit sexual attraction and action in males.

JV Kohl at [pheromones.com](http://pheromones.com) almost seems to argue that men like gorgeous girls because they smell good (and they later come to associate their visual traits wiith such a smell via conditioning). Certainly seems plausible as a reason for explaining physical ‘types’ that one somewhat idiosyncratically prefers.

It seems rather obvious that the particular chemistry of the copulins would be useful for knowing which females are fertile, so as to maximize the survival of the species. But it seems plausible to me that copulins could be used to signify a female who is “worth breeding with” in spite of other factors that might suggest other females had an upper hand. Every woman’s copulin singnature is unique, after all; is it not possible that men can “smell” genetic compatibility just as can women, through this mechanism?

Seems like a way that non-“alpha” females could have a fighting chance.

It was from the book “Sperm Wars” (you can find it on Amazon) and the following article from Keep The Doctor Away (a British online medical journal):

Evolutionary ‘Sperm Competition’ Discovered
13/02/2007

Some breaking news, just in time for Valentine’s Day: Researchers have identified something called ‘sperm competition,’ evolved by men to ensure a genetic future in spite of the possibility of infidelity by their partner.

Natural selection is generally thought of as something that happens prior to – and in fact leads to - the Big Event. We are attracted, for example, to physical features that tell us our partner is healthy and will give us a fighting chance to carry on our genetic lineage.

But a new article in the February issue of Current Directions in Psychological Science suggests that the human male has evolved ways to pass on his genes after the Big Bang as well, a phenomenon dubbed “sperm competition.”

In their article, Todd Shackelford and Aaron Goetz at Florida Atlantic University describe this as “the inevitable consequence of males competing for fertilizations.”

For a monogamous species, sperm competition may seem beside the point. But according to the authors, extra curricular copulations (i.e. affairs) appear to be a significant part of our ancestral history and could, evolutionarily speaking, spell disaster. A man whose partner engages in some off-sides dalliances may be unwittingly investing his resources – food, protection, credit rating – in a genetically unrelated offspring.

Competition may even affect sperm count, say the authors. The more time men spend away from their partners (time that their partners could have spent giving other males genetic opportunities), the number of sperm in their ejaculate increases upon their next copulation.

The authors even took the liberty of constructing artificial phalluses, which they found actually removed an ejaculate-like substance from an artificial vagina. This could indicate that the penis acts as a ‘squeegee’ to remove an interloper’s calling card.

But according to the authors, sperm competition is not just biology: sexual partners report that men thrust more deeply and quickly following allegations of infidelity, possibly bungling the aspirations of rival sperm. The same periods of separation that increase a man’s sperm count may also help to explain the increasingly lustful feelings men develop after long periods apart from their mate. That is, the human male may want to copulate as soon as possible as insurance against possible womb-stealing by a genetic rival.

The authors compare sexual adaptation to a Cold War phenomenon: “Sexual conflict between males and females,” Shackelford and Goetz describe, “produces a co-evolutionary arms race between the sexes,” in which an advantage gained by one gender leads to counter-adaptations in the other.
They speculate that research may move beyond male adaptations to, for example, see if females have developed biological or behavioural mechanisms to increase retention of sperm from men with the most favourable genes. But that’s for another Valentine’s Day.
