article by well known Luca Turin about ingredients that must be reformulated due to regulations, really do not know how this will effect all my favorite colognes

here is an excerpt

> Perfumery, a hundred-year-old art, has taken a long time dying, but on January 1, 2010 it will be officially dead. On that date, amendment 43 by IFRA, the international fragrance association, will take effect, and all perfumes on the market, old, young, fine fragrance or shampoo, must follow its guidelines or be in breach of the law in the EU.

I read that article on Basenotes as well. It mentions anything with Oakmoss will have to be reformulated, but i wish it mentioned which other notes would become outlawed once this took effect. Then i could at least attempt to get my hands on them while they’re still around. 🙄

On the bright side, it does mention this regulation is being passed by the EU. Which, to my knowledge, the US is not a part of. 😃 That means these notes may still be used by any parfum house in the US, which we may find springing up a bit more often once this hits. Just a thought.

Yep its coming already and is why AMMO is not [Ammo](https://a314.com/product/ammo/) scented any more. It had to be reformulated

Similar things have happened before.

In 1810 Napoleon decreed that the formula for all medicines had to be made public. It was then that **4711 Echt Kölnisch Wasser** changed from a medicinal nostrum to a cologne to avoid going public with its formula. They kept selling the stuff but called it something else that was unregulated.

The article suggests a small label “do not spray on skin” to circumvent the “protectors” in the EU by making it oficially “not a perfume for the skin.” Who knows, maybe now it is an expensive room freshener.

The article also mentions that in the bizarre risk algorithm of the EU, benefit for perfume is 0, so any risk is unacceptable when risks are weighed against benefits.

Medicine is acknowledged to have benefit. In fact, all kind of dangerous things that can kill you if taken in excess are sold over the counter as medicines. Mayhap things will come full circle, and we will once again see **4711 Echt Kölnisch Wasser** as a medicine, perhaps this time manufactured and sold at a high profit margin by Pfizer.

I read on basenotes and someone made a good point that IRFA is overreacting like typical…I mean cigarettes kill more people…and how many people in the EU smoke?

How come they have not banned smoking?

Not that I am for banning smoking…but when was the last time a perfume really harmed anyone?? I mean i think this over regulation is ridiculous

synthetic colognes give me a headache. so they’re getting rid of ingredients that may or may not give someone a rash, and replacing them with ingredients that will give me a headache. Axe is probably laughing about this.

I second the cigarettes thing. And I don’t even need to mention alcohol. This is pure hypocrisy. I’m allergic to milk, but I’m not writing congress to ban milk and replace it with Soy.

They should release a list of fragrances that will be affected so we could stock up now.

instead of banning, how about some rediculous warnings on the label instead?

i prefer a skull and crossbones to not having a choice 😃

on second thought, those old ladies in the supermarket DO give me a headache…
