I recently received a pot full of packages in the mail. One had some genuine Oud from Southeast Asia that was 9 ml and cost me $70+. Of course It is a not AAA at that price, but it’s good enough for what I want to do.

In another package from the Perfumer Apprentice ([http://www.perfumersapprentice.com/](http://www.perfumersapprentice.com/))I received the synthetics Oud Blend (Firmenlich) and Black Agar (Givaudan).

I did this tour once by myself, but I decided to include Puppet in a repeat tour in order to get a second opinion, and I am glad I did.

We sat down and applied a drop of the real stuff on our left forearms near the elbow. The Firmenlich went on to the right forearms in the middle and lastly Givaudan went on our left inside wrists.

The Dehn Al was like syrup and took a while to blossom forth with its wonderful woody scent.

The Firmenich Oud Blend was thick like honey and immediately gave its scent.

The Givaudian Black Agar was rather watery and also gave forth its scent upon application. It was at first a bit astringent.

During the next three hours we occasionally checked with each other as to what was happening to the fragrance of each one. When we smelled each one on each other – they were very much different – proving once again that a fragrance changes in reaction to the individual wearer. We both agreed that the genuine article was better that the two synthetics, however as they matured – they became very similar. Those two companies making the synthetics are doing a great job.

Between us we agreed that first place is the real thing, followed by the Oud Blend and in 3rd the Black Agar.

After seven hours all three are hanging in there – the original is giving up a kind of cedar tone, The Oud blend is ending like myrrh and the Black Agar is like frankincense.

All three are wonderful and with the addition of some other components – I believe the synthetics can and are pulling it off and saving lots of trees – and that is not a bad thing!

Beautiful Wood!
