> Any anthropological model based on “survival and needs” must incorporate its biological basis (e.g., the biological basis of the need for food choice and of mate choice that is required for species survival). Food choice and mate choice are both functions of chemistry—as perceived (e.g., odors), or not (e.g., pheromones).
>
> Instead, anthropological models tend to dismiss evolutionary developmental biology, and skip to behavior, which means there’s no animal model. For example, anthropologists can tell us about love from a uniquely human perspective. We think love is…. But then the anthropologists back-track, and tell us about how certain hormones present in other species probably alter our behavior in the same manner they alter the behavior of other animals that don’t fall in love.
>
> That’s why I have stressed the fact thatno model is consistently used in the scientific study of human sexuality. A consistent mammalian model (i.e., my model) links olfactory/pheromonal input from the social environment to hormonal influences on sexual behavior and helps to reduce disparate findings and debate over inconsistent results from studies of human sexual behavior.
>
> The inconsistent results frequently come from an anthropological perspective that examines adult sexual behavior without the contextual development from an evolutionary developmental biology approach. The Achilles heel of every other discipline is their inability to explain non-heterosexual attraction. Homosexual behavior, whether expressed or considered, obviously negates the “humans are primarily visual creatures” attitude, and relegates thought processes about who and what characteristics should attract us to status of lesser importance than the biology (genetically predisposed, hormone-driven) of our behavior.
>
> Your commonly held perspective (perhaps largely based on social science studies) is falling prey to remarkable advances in neuroscience, which do not include speculation as to how or why this or that is important to survival and needs. Simply put, if it were not important, it wouldn’t be part of a neuroscientific (brain-based) explanation.
>
> For example, neither visual input nor love is part of any neuroscientific explanation for human sexual behavior. See, for example: Kohl, J. V. (2007). The Mind’s Eyes: Human pheromones, neuroscience, and male sexual preferences. In M. R. Kauth (Ed.), _Handbook of the Evolution of Human Sexuality_ (pp. 313-369). Binghamton: Haworth Press. This article/book chapter won the Ira and Harriet Reiss Theory Award for 2007, which is given annually for the best social science article, chapter, or book published in the previous year in which theoretical explanations of human sexual attitudes and behaviors are developed. If the model therein had an Achilles heel, I think that someone would probably have mentioned it.
>
> Philosophically, however, people are free to expound upon how we are different from other animals. It’s nice that we have the ability to think about such things, but thought processes are not required to meet any survival need of any species on this planet.
>
> James V. Kohl

no offense man, first of all i really don’t know why you feel the need to type like you’re submiting a grant proposal. type like you speak. and if you speak like that, get help!
second, of course you will “reduce disparate findings” when you go from a complex to a simpler model. that’s what makes them simple!!!

honestly bro your research seems mental masturbatory to me. you started off with a conclusion then you cherry picked information to support it. and what’s this? your website sells a fragrance? oooooo marketing me thinks?

and i looked at your website and the page about you. interesting how it doesn’t say anything about your educational background but it talks a lot about other people.

come on man, at this point i’m waiting for you to tell me how to grow my penis size by 3 inches.

> understand that alpha beta are all mental attitudes. you can be alpha or beta stranded by yourself on an island.

Actually that is not completely true. You can be alpha in your head all you want but that doesn’t means you have and practice leadership skills. And leadership within the group is what being alpha is all about. You earn that role by demonstrating a higher level of skill, knowledge and charisma than others in the group. You network and form bounds and partnerships within the group, cementing your alpha role. People recognize your confidence and competence, and want to follow you. No group of followers, no alpha role or responsibilities. You’re just a lone wolf when you’re by yourself. Sure the lone wolf possesses some alpha characteristics, but that does not make him an alpha male. It makes him a man.

I teach young males every semester whom think they’re alpha and spend a great deal of effort trying to prove this, mainly for the female members of the class. Put them in a project leadership role and the group falls apart and one of the less charismatic but more skillful and knowledgeable female members take over. And, yes, some men find themselves a reluctant leader albeit they feel unqualified and beta, and yet somehow they rise to the occasion. In that situation–no matter how they feel about it–they are the alpha male.

ya see that’s why i began with it all comes down to how you define it. there’s a difference between THE alpha male and AN alpha male. the first one (which i think you’re describing) is a group dynamic, the second is a mentality.

Alpha male has been long been officially defined as the leader of a group and is still normally used in that sense. Anything else is a personal interpretation and departure from the original meaning of the term. Alpha male is a status and role, i.e., a physical state of being. And that alpha status doesn’t change if you lose your confidence or have self doubts during your darkest hour. You’re still the head of the household, president of the company or chair of the senate.

Yes I have noticed in popular self-help culture the term “alpha male” has been dumbed down to a state of mind–e.g., confident can-do attitude. Separating state of mind from role and status makes the concept of “alpha” easier to realize for young men. Hell, smear on A314, stick out your chest, don the right attitude and people will follow you unto the ends of the earth. Not. And while the confident can-do attitude is certainly a component of leaders, it does not make you one. Being responsible for the welfare of your group, developing the wisdom to lead and learning to network and delegate power are the things that propel you into active alpha status. Having an alpha like attitude merely makes you a man (rather than a weenie) and is a great starting point in life.

i think that’s kinda what i was saying. when someone askes “how do i becomes alpha” they need to clarify whether they mean how do i become the leader of a group or how do i change my mindset. i don’t agree that the use of the term alpha male is a personal interpretation. meanings change to reflect culture. if you were talking to someone using slang and going by dictionary definitions you will have no idea what they are talkin about. and my experience of the use of that term is apparently radically different from yours. everyone i’ve talked to uses the term alpha male to describe characteristics and not roles. they only use the role definition to describe animals.

Wikipedia’s explanation and definition of alpha male is excellent and clarifies the major accepted meanings of the term for both humans and animals:

> **[Dominance hierarchy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_male)**
>
> In the zoological field of ethology, a dominance hierarchy (formerly and colloquially called a pecking order) is a type of social hierarchy that arises when members of animal social groups interact, creating a ranking system. Different types of interactions can result in dominance depending on the species, including ritualized displays of aggression or direct physical violence. In social living groups, members are likely to compete for access to limited resources and mating opportunities. Rather...

Beyond the writings in male self-help websites, I’ve never heard anybody use the term alpha male to mean anything but dominant male, leader or big kuhuna in a social hierarchy.

Taking the following two models by jvk and allstarmvp, we have the two larger pieces of the question i set out to answer. I would also like to thank gegogi, meow and sillykitty for their invaluable views, and andrew for his story that allows us to relate this concept to the real world.

**Model 1**
Environmental factors by allstar:
**I believe that a person can be an alpha wherever they go…It is a way of life and the way they carry themselves. Even if they are performing an action that they aren’t native to doing, they won’t be afraid to fail. Alphas don’t care what people think because they have their own mindset and only follow HIS reality, not others. You can’t be Alpha in one place and be a beta somewhere else, that is not a true Alpha. He will figure out whatever he can do to stay on top or close to the top.** When a beta fails, he is bombarded with negative thoughts like “I suck at this” or “I hope I never do this again” while an alpha will just calk it up to experience and move on with his life.

**Model 2**
Biological factors by JVK:
Mother/infant recognition is more a function of olfactory/pheromonal cues associated with the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) of mammals (i.e., the Human Leucocyte Antigen (HLA) region of genes in humans, which are typically associated with “tissue type” or genetic diversity/similarity).

These MHC-dependent cues are rarely differentiated (e.g., by marketers) from the olfactory/pheromonal cues that are associated with age. Age-related production begins with the onset of adrenarche (not with puberty, like most sources say). Cues associated with dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) production begin as early as age 6-8.

Most of us would be unlikely to notice the subtle change in a 6-8 year-old child’s scent compared to a younger child’s scent, but instead recognize the change with increased gonadal hormone production with the onset of puberty. Remember when you first noticed your own axillary odor? Your mom noticed your natural scent changing long before you did.

By the time of life anyone is perceived by someone else as an alpha, associations with the alpha-characteristic scent have been made from a much earlier time in life (age 6-8?). Simply put, if you lack the ability to recognize an alpha by the time you confront one as a reproductively mature adult, you run the risk of challenging someone like Gegogi to a fight that you’re unlikely to win. Fortunately for you, perhaps, a true alpha is not easily provoked, and exudes the kind of confidence that makes an intelligent person think twice. That’s why an intelligent woman might think twice about choosing the idiot who starts a fight compared to the intelligent alpha who would rather avoid it. But she’s also choosing based on scent that is associated with the physical characteristics of the alpha male. And the physical characteristics are associated with levels of gonadal and adrenal steroid hormones. Tall, dark, and handsome is merely a visual description of an alpha’s scent signature. Add muscle and/or confidence and the olfactory/pheromonal - visual link becomes more clear.

Illness will first suppress immune system-related (MHC/HLA) scent production and progress to suppress gonadal hormone-associated scent production. A sick (or sickly male) will have a less appealing odor, and there are age-associated aspects of this as well. Older men don’t typically smell like young studs…

I think you all know that I could write another book or two on human pheromones. But my scientific perspective just doesn’t sell as well as most products do. So, I’ll leave you in Gegogi’s qualified and considerate hands. Minimally, he has read a book about human pheromones.

I’ve never met him, but can tell he’s an alpha male because I’ve made associations with their characteristics across a life-time of experience. I don’t need to sniff around to recognize an alpha male from a distance, or simply from his written words – and neither do you, or the women you are interested in. Remember that saying about the pen being mightier than the sword? If you’re not communicating with olfactory/pheromonal cues, you still can communicate – get it?

**On the other hand, if you do happen to meet an alpha-male, your experience with his natural scent will assure you (albeit at a sub-conscious level) of his status.** That’s why pheromone-enhancement with the right product can benefit you in closer proximity. Want to win the fight before it starts, potentially without effort, or increase your chances of getting the girl? Make yourself smell like an alpha. Smell like you look bigger and better!

Lastly, I believe that one CAN learn the true traits of an Alpha Male through affirmations (programming your brain to believe a certain statement). Your brain is a POWERFUL mechanism in which if a statement is repeated over and over, it can come into reality. That is how habits are formed and why they are so tough to break (Because your brain set up a 30 foot barbed wire fence around you beliefs). This is why Betas look upon alphas with awe and wish that they were them but fail when they put fourth the effort to change. They shoot themselves down with negative self-talk and that is why they are not as successful as alphas. If a person has confidence, traits like body language and eye movement will come naturally, and therefore will be more alpha.

From this we determine that both biological and environmental factors have a large part to play in determining whether one is a true alpha. Pheromones are produced by an alpha that affect him at an unconscious level, AND he possesses a mindset to match which translate into his actions in the real world. For those that use [synthetic pheromones](https://pheromonelabs.com/shop/) in order to be more alpha-like, all they are simply doing is becoming as close to a true alpha as possible by mimicing their actions and mindset, and in this process gaining many of the advantages that a true alpha reaps regularly. Whenever they stop using these synthetic pheromones it is very likely that they will in fact go back to being their old selves; although i do remember reading about some users mentioning that products such as a314 have a permanent positive effect on the users’ mindsets and actions, It is correct to say that a true alpha was born an alpha. As Gegogi points out, the only beta that can become an alpha is the one that was born an alpha, but may have become a beta at some points temporarily due to overwhelmingly dark environmental factors.
What i would like to clarify is that alot of people think that being an alpha means flexing your muscles and intimidating others. This is not the case. The true image of an alpha has been distorted by the media and we are now confused into thinking that being an alpha means being a bad-boy i.e flex and push them around. This is why i asked at the start of this discussion the difference between an alpha and a bad-boy, and as meow and gegogi pointed out, most people have the wrong image of a true alpha-male. If you read back into this discussion you will see evidence of this.
For this reason it is no longer sufficient to base what is an alpha simply on what they act or look like. It is better to instead adopt a model which encompasses the common traits of true alphas. You will see that all true alphas possess 2 traits: Intelligence that is above the norm; Competent social skills.
The social skills allow an alpha to network; to deal with everyone from thugs to parents; social skills are absolutely vital for, as sillykitty was trying to point out, what is the point of a genius, if he is only genius in his own head. Possessing intelligence above the norm places the individual ‘above the norm’ and therefore to an alpha-status. With sufficent intelligence an alpha can choose and accomplish whatever he so wishes; whether that is to lead a nation, or to make a trillion and relax on his own personal island with clones of all the victorias secrets models and an army of ninja oompa-loompas to guard him.

The alpha, beta and omega castes shed some new light on this. So there is one alpha, the pretenders are the betas and those that do not even attempt to pretend are the omegas. That seems to put things in a better perspective.

Most things are not plain black and white. It is not uncommon for hardcore alpha males to require regular vacations from their alpha status and mindset. Always being in command and responsible for those around you is pretty darn draining. It seems the more power and responsibility, the more bizarre the vacation. An in-your-face alpha friend of mine spends his weekends in S&M clubs. Apparently the beatings and sexual domination relax and prime him for a week of kicking ass at work. He even does regular suspensions! I suppose it toughens you up but I guess I’m not alpha enough to require a biweekly tangle and assorted strawberries on my butt cheeks and back.

I’m quite mystified on why meow doesn’t understand why you seek your knowledge, well for one, to produce that designated knowledge into results right? As I said earlier, the concept of an being Alpha has been distorted beyond proportions. People have the idea that an alpha is merely the leader of the pack and HAS to dominate whatever supersedes his path. Being is alpha a WAY OF LIFE, a true alpha does not have to be beta at all times as once again, if he is congruent with his inner beliefs and knows the difference between his direct and indirect intentions, as well as being in control of his state of mind, actions and reactions and lastly, of his decisions. An alpha has the ability of increasing his value whilst increasing the value of others around him instead of deducing the value to make himself feel better, which is far from alpha. The equivocal value increase of both you and others creates a Paradigm Shift. In conclusion an alpha is truly a MAN. And thats what women truly die for, A real man.

And thats what women truly die for, A real man.

well that’s my point…knowledge is just a precursor to action. so now what? more knowledge or time for action?

Very good point. But who said we aren’t converting our knowledge into action?

“Chance favors the prepared mind.”

Some people here appear to be interested in increasing their chances of success with pheromone-enhanced products by learning more about how they work. Others will probably need more luck.
