No offense to any of the “journalers” out there, but I find it hard to search for specific information without having to read someones WHOLE journal. I don’t always have the time to read everything they have ever said. It can be frustrating when looking for a quick answer!

I found this too, a way around it would be when doing your search, search for related POSTS instead of threads. I don’t feel like wading through a 10 page plus thread for a single post either.

Yes it does. You could end up having to read a huge journal just to find one piece of info. Some people feel more comfortable posting private info in the journals though because only registered members can see them.

I usually do 2 searches. One for threads on the keyword. I skip reading the results from the journals and just read the results in the main forum.

Then I search the keyword again and check off “search posts” and highlight the journal section and go back and read those results.

It helps cut back on all the reading a little.

To build upon what Tisha and Radman said, you can also do a search for posts containing a certain keyword within a journal itself using ‘search this thread’.

Obviously finding one specific post in a 30 page journal is going to be more difficult than in a few page thread but I’ve never found myself reading an entire journal for one piece of information.

But taking your point into consideration, what exactly do you suggest we as journalers do differently? I honestly try to make my journal as easy to read as I have time for but your complaint deals more with ease of navigation of which I have no control other than ceasing the journal altogether (which isn’t happening btw 😉).

I guess i didn’t know some of the other ways/tips to better search threads or even that you could search once inside a thread…so that will make it easier… I was just pointing out a little frustration I was having wasn’t really screaming for you guys to change… I guess I should have asked for better ways too search the forum… I know steve has a how search the forum thread might have to reread it to see if what has been suggested here is in that…It’s been awhile since i read that. thanx for the pointers everyone

When my search results include a 16 page journal, I just skip over those results. I’m not going to wade through all of those pages.

But if you see a journal result from someone whose opinion is especially valuable to you, you can go back to the search page and search for entries from that specific user name. The search results then show posts made by that user that include your search string.

But for the most part, I stay away from journals when searching.

Most of the people who Journal, will be more than happy to answer a simple question. I feel that most of them would help you out as long as its not a total noob question like “where do I buy AMMO from”. I’ve asked several long time members here about their opinions and have gotten some great responses from them. Most of them will respond to you especially the more active ones.

BG is right, when I used to do searches for certain things. I learned a lot from Journals of CL, Wildflower, etc. The search this thread function is very useful.

What I personally do is I right click on my browser and open in new window. If I find the pertinent information I’ll keep it, if not then close it out quickly without having to lose the search.

I hope that’s not a bad thing.

But for a while I was testing a bunch of putatives so it might be why my posts come up since it’s the most recent.
