ABSTRACT In a sample of sexually active college females, condom use, as an indirect measure of the presence of semen in the reproductive tract, was related to scores on the Beck Depression Inventory. Not only were females who were having sex without condoms less depressed, but depressive symptoms and suicide attempts among females who used condoms were proportional to the consistency of condom use. For females who did not use condoms, depression scores went up as the amount of time since their last sexual encounter increased. These data are consistent with the possibility that semen may antagonize depressive symptoms and evidence which shows that the vagina absorbs a number of components of semen that can be detected in the bloodstream within a few hours of administration.

There’s definitely interesting properties to semen, and some very strong effects of fluid exchange in general. (no doubt men are getting something, too) otherwise they wouldn’t be as loathe to condoms as they are)

Women who don’t use condoms have been shown to be happier while they are in a relationship or with a lover, and more depressed without. They tend to find it harder to not be in an active, sexual relationship.

So there’s an _up and down_ side to both sides of the ol’ _in and out_.

Crying over spilled semen

Here’s a little something from Psychology Today magazine a few years back on Gallup’s work:

**Crying Over Spilled Semen**

By: Tiffany Kary
Summary: Why women who don’t use condoms feel happier.

The finding that women who do not use condoms during sex are less depressed and less likely to attempt suicide than are women who have sex with condoms and women who are not sexually active, leads one researcher to conclude that semen contains powerful-and potentially addictive-mood-altering chemicals.

Study author Gordon G. Gallup, Ph.D., a psychologist at the State University of New York in Albany, also found that women who routinely had intercourse without condoms became increasingly depressed as more time elapsed since their last sexual encounter. There was no such correlation for women whose partners regularly used condoms.

Gallup’s survey of 293 college women also found that those who did not use condoms were most likely to initiate sex and to seek out new partners as soon as a relationship ended. “These women are more vulnerable to the rebound effect, which suggests that there is a chemical dependency,” says Gallup.

Semen contains hormones including testosterone, estrogen, prolactin, luteinizing hormone and prostaglandins, and some of these are absorbed through the walls of the vagina and are known to elevate mood.

Gallup controlled for variables including method of contraception, frequency of sexual intercourse, as well as the women’s perception of their relationship. He concedes that women who regularly have sex without condoms might share personality traits that make them less susceptible to depression. But the behavior most often associated with non-condom users is sexual risk-taking, and studies have found no correlation between high-risk sexual behavior and lower rates of depression.

Gallup’s study, which he deems “the first serious attempt to investigate the effect of semen chemistry on women,” titillated the public and rankled some academics upon publication in _Archives of Sexual Behavior_. Gallup says he has since replicated the findings with a sample of 700 women and will examine whether **“semen withdrawal”** places women at an increased risk for depression when they are premenstrual, menopausal or have just given birth, as many women abstain from sex during these periods.

I wonder if everytime you ejaculate your testosterone level drops?

I’d have to look it up, but I remember reading that if you abstain from ejaculating for a week, your test levels jump somewhere around the 7th day.

I’ve noticed that with short term abstinence (from ejaculation) I either become more attractive to women (perhaps pheromonally), or I become better at detecting interest cues from women.

Must be something built in by nature to ensure we don’t go without sex for too long, after we’re already active.

On the other hand, I’ve noticed that long term abstinence doesn’t have this effect. Not with me, anyway. If I’m “out of the game” for too long, so to speak, I become less attractive and/or worse at picking up indicators of interest from women. Inertia.
