Going clubbing anytime soon? Want to impress someone with your muscle tone? Then maybe you heard that some guys are spreading the hemorrhoid cream on their chests to look “ripped.” It’s an off-label use that Wyeth Consumer Health disavows. But the trend is likely to ring the register anyway. At a CVS Pharmacy on New York’s Long Island, manager Lawrence Weisz has noticed a definite shift in the demographic of customers purchasing Preparation H products. “It’s definitely been a lot more younger guys lately,” tells [Clublife](http://standingonthebox.blogspot.com/2008/05/nightlife-cream-of-crop.html). “It used to be that people would steal it because they didn’t want to come up to the counter and let everyone know they had hemorrhoids. Now, these young guys come in and they’re very aggressive about it. It’s gotten to the point where I can pick out the guys who are going to buy it when they walk in the door.”
“If you want to get laid, you have to know how to dance,” one clubber tells Clublife. “And if you want girls to dance with you, you have to look ripped. I usually drive down the block so nobody sees me, then I pull over, take my shirt off, rub it everywhere I can reach, then pick up the rest of my boys in my undershirt. It works best if you put it on about an hour before you go in the club.”
And Mitchell Goldner, who manages a nightclub in New York’s Meatpacking District, tells Clublife that slathering Preparation H is “is a totally recession-proof business, like funeral parlors or police departments. These kids today would rather starve than not come to our clubs, and this is certainly reflected in the rising sales of Preparation H on Long Island, in New Jersey and elsewhere.”

Preparation H contains phenylephrine HCL that shrinks swollen hemorrhoid tissues and works by constricting nearby blood vessels feeding blood and fluid to the area. But as [ABC News](http://abcnews.go.com/Health/SkinCare/Story?id=4966867&page=2) points out, the ingredient doesn’t discriminate what kind of tissue it will shrink, hence the underground tips for applying Preparation H under the eyes, on love handles or other places.
But even if you don’t get lucky using Preparation H, you may feel your heart pound, although love won’t be the cause. “Probably if you put enough of it on, it would raise your blood pressure,” Darrell Rigel, clinical professor of dermatology at New York University Medical Center, tells ABC. “It’s not designed to cover the whole area of your chest. It’s designed to cover a small part of your rear end.”

Ah, so when we dance with guys, they wear this cream?

If it shrinks your tissues, don’t get any on your _ahem_ 🙂

I’d heard of it being used to get rid of bags under the eyes, but not this.

Surely the best way to get “ripped” is to have a low bodyfat percentage?

And do women really care so much about ripped, or is that just what us guys think?

Nah, if you are a healthy weight, subtle differences don’t matter. Though looks matter a lot more in mainstream casual sex than in general dating situations, unless you tlk about drunk or easy girls. I think it just makes the guy feel more confident, act more socially aggressive and that gets him dancing with girls. The guys that are popular, at work, college or in the club tend to be guys who are outgoing and friendly in general or if more the cool, reserved guy, still actively going after the girl he likes. Different girls like different guys, some like a tall, slim guy and don’t mind him being a bit lanky, others like a solid, husky guy and don’t mind slight lovehandles. It is pretty sad that boys are risking their health to lose a pound of fat for an hour or so.

What a lot of guys do is dance near you, but never fully deciding if they want to dance with you or if they are scared. Like they are going trough the motions but are not _present_ in their physical bodies. It’s uncomfortable for a girl to have a guy just linger without taking action, being lost in thought, so once momentum is lost you just join your girlfriends again or go for a drink or something. Fear of rejection can thus actually cause rejection. (It’s interesting how this gives of the same vibe as an artist with performance anxiety. By learning to be a good performer, I automatically notice the dynamic in everyday situations.) Why not spray a little Spaceland instead to overcome that fear? Then just dance with the girl, move together, lead her in the dance, make eye contact, be playful with the theme of the music and be in your body which is always in the here and now. Don’t think, just feel and do.

That’s sort of the problem I notice: there are so many potential ways to avoid psychic contact by escaping into technology based toys, gadgets… they soon become reflexes for staying in one’s own solipsistic bubble… after trying out PUA books, seminars, inner game theory and all that jazz… the most important insight got lost, that the central thing in connection is the physical self, the embodied self… it’s that deep sense of real physicality that gives star quality, magical charisma… all of the attitude games are the thinnest cover up for having or lacking a strong psychic involvement in the present through physical consciousness… and that’s not the same as being pumped, ripped, strutting, posing… hanging out in front of imaginary mirrors… it’s more like a coherence between body, mind, and emotions… you can immediately tell when someone is in sync with him or herself on multiple levels or that person is fragmented into strange or confused little compartments…

You are right about that, knowledge and technology should be used to enhance, not replace psychic contact.

That is the dilemma, if you have any kind of social fear, it is easier to turn your body into a marionette and make it go through the motions while you hide safely into a far corner of the mind, observing it all. It is easier indeed but so much less effective both when it comes to entertaining others and enjoying yourself. Experiences are never truly satisfying if you are not fully present.

I don’t know much about picking up girls, so I’ll talk about dance, starpower works the same way in any show anyway. A lot of dancers think that if they make their marionette go through a lot of impressive movements and tricks, it will impress the audience. And it does for about 5 minutes. Then the audience forgets them. The performers that really leave their mark are the ones who _really feel_ the music in the moment and express what the music strikes _in them_ and then connect to the audience and wrap them in that energy. Their vulnerability actually gives them strength. There is quite a connection between this and the choreography vs. improvisation thing, but it is more than that.

Now that said, you do need technical dancing(or singing, playing and instrument) and performing skill to be able to do this. People don’t want to see aunt Kate in her housedress, expressing some ugly feelings about her divorce to a song. The stage is not a therapy session where you can let it all hang out. Your audience does not want to be your diary. They do really want a show, to see someone looking glamourous and be poised and charming. And if Kate wants to win an audience, she will need her dance skill, showmanship, hairspray and false eyelashes. But she also needs to be a real human inside the showgirl, to show her joys and her pains and do it in a heart-breakingly beautiful way.

I think it comes down to some basic confusions in our public culture in this day and time: we’ve become an appearance culture, a media culture, so we have more and more come to know ourselves and our social world through media… big screen media, small screen media, all of it is very imagistic, two dimensional, edited, made with the audience in mind… it’s also very sterile and two dimensional, but we’ve bought into the _sterile image as a vital replica of the human_, which it ain’t, and can’t be, and never will be, but it is easy, low risk, low effort, low depth disposable simulacrum culture, ultimately as Beaudrillard put it, a world of _ **Fake Fakes 😃** _, twice removed from grounded reality… so you have all these confused kids who are trying to connect on the plane of the simulacrum, perfecting their lines and their moves, _when the real deal is to get back to the source code, the earth energies that course through the body-mind_, not the scrim of plastic shit that will be ground up and recycled in tomorrow’s garbage collection…🆒

Its interesting you add this point. I rarely use TV or buy magazines anymore and I notice I feel so much more calm and grounded, and have much more patience.

What is your own experience?

I have watched ZERO television (except for brief doses while traveling) during the past three years… the first month was clearly breaking an addiction, many of the symptoms were akin to those described as mild tranquilizer dependency 😕… which should come as no surprise…

My second act was removing all electronic communication gadgetry from my apartment, no TV, no internet, no telephone, a cell nearby only for emergency communication… I only have running water, electric lighting, and air conditioning/heating… the rest is gone. It was like scraping a thick layer of algal slime off of my brain.:o

I do have an awesomely good stereo 😉 and piles of books. I can spend hours reading with no interruption whatsoever. Most conversations I hear or overhear these days suggest very little sustained mental effort in the realm of the book. Magazine thinking, cartoon thinking, clicking through the channels with the remote thinking, youtube thinking 🆒… yep, its’ all there, but book thinking ?, thematic thinking across perspectives ?, thinking that operates from multiple levels of reference ?.. nope. Don’t hear too much of that these days. 😮

That is outstanding what you did 🙂 What benefits do you still experience?

Somehow I don’t have too many people close to me watching lots of TV except my mom. Most of my friends are either very social and have stuff to do most nights, or geeky folks who play board games and read fantasy or very into self improvement and take classes/read self help stuff. That said, all either love the net or the phone.

Tacitus, your comments reminded me of something. I think there’s an investment guru called Nassim Nicholas Taleb (not sure if that’s correct), author of “Fooled by Randomness”, who lives like a 19th-Century gentleman as much as he can. No internet, no TV, no radio. Reads books and newspapers. His idea, as I understand it, is that we are constantly bombarded with ‘news’ and ‘information’, which is mostly meaningless noise. Things like continuous stock quotes, for example. They just aren’t significant, in Taleb’s view. He feels that it takes time for anything important to be recognised as important, and he’s talking decades here, not years, so if something survives for 50 years or so then it’s probably got some real value.
