Human Mating Dance

Woman looks at Man

Man catches her looking (this is the hard part)

Man approaches woman, asks a series of mundane questions and walks away. (IF HE FAILS TO WALK AWAY THE WOMAN WILL BECOME ANNOYED AND FLEE)

If Woman is interested she chases him.

If Man is interested he lets her catch him. (This is the easy part because he’s almost always interested)

Details are highly individualized but that’s the nutshell version.

Depends. I take it you mean the type who are interested in women, right? LOL. They are hanging out in places where they think hot women of the same age are. Honestly.

> [@Mohammad\_Shah](#):
>
> The easiest way to get a man’s attention towards you is to show interest in his conversations, nature of work, hobby, opinion, etc, but avoid his wealth and _ **his horrible ex-wife** _!

Hmmmm. Not a bad start lol.

Seriously - I would do what you find fun and use that to meet guys with similar interests and then see where it goes from there. Same advice I would give guys lloking to meet women.

As far as how to act …

At age 40 you are a big girl. I do not think it is too forward if you find a guy you are interested in and he is interested in you to go through something like this:

TG: I like hang-gliding.
Copycat: Me too.
Yada, yada - if guy seems interested, but won’t ask for number …

Copycat: Maybe we could go hang-gliding together sometime soon.
or
Copycat: Let’s exchange numbers (or let me give you my number) and we can talk about going out hang-gliding sometime soon.

(Remember - a lot of guys are really sensitive to getting shot down asking for a number … you may have to strongly prompt or even offer your number.)

That should get your foot in the door. now - will some guys take that as a direct indication you are looking for sex. Yes. But that is the nature of the beast. Can’t be avoided. But you are big enough to steer it away from there … unless you don’t want to steer it away from there.

How to behave when you get one depends entirely up to you and your priniciples - there is no formula. He will either respect you as a person or not. As long as you are not neurotic or psychotic, if he is interested, he should respect you enough to be willing to let the relationship develop. At this point in my life (mid-40s), if I were suddenly single again I would need to make sure you:

1. Were not crazy
2. Fit in with the kids
3. Fit in with my _complete_ lifestyle

Does that mean I expect you to change your lifestyle to fit my needs and expectations. No - certainly not. But there has to be an overall fit and then you can compromise and make adjustments. If there is not an overall fit someone will have to compromise way too much … and the compromising party may well either regret or feel angry about it in the future or the compromise will last only through the romance stage and then will start to swing back towards “normal”. At which point I would think “Hey - you changed or misrepresented yourself” and you would think “I did what you wanted, why can’t you reciprocate or accept me as I am?” Not a formula for long term success.

Are a lot of guys looking for sex? Yes. Do you want to use sex as bait. Probably not - because guys are very good at compartmentalizing their lives. You do not want to become this month’s sex fling - because guys will drop you if you become to demanding in areas outside that compartment.

I also think you want to demonstrate that you are “multi-dimensional” (OK Woofie - you can make a sci-fi joke here if you want to) - so you are not compartmentalized - if you are looking for a ltr. It may be asking a little much but personally I would need to know that you could go from shorts and hiking boots Saturday afternoon to a lbd and heels Saturday evening. Or from a baseball game on Friday night to brunch at the local gardens on Sunday.

I’m competing with a bunch of MILFs? Ack.

Really, it isn’t _meeting_ men, it’s the stuff that happens after the eye contact. I’m clueless. I think MPB isn’t just for guys.

What I keep encountering is:

TG: I like hang gliding.

Copycat: Me too. Maybe we could go hang gliding together sometime soon.

TG: I have my son every other weekend and my ex-wife has my hang glider in the garage, so I’d have to schedule with her…

WTF?!

Perhaps this is where I’m failing.

On the dating Web sites, they ask, “Do you want kids?”

And I’m an honest person, so I say no. And hey, guess what? That includes YOUR kids, boys.

So when check the little box that says you don’t want kids, then say, “The best thing in my life is my 13-year old triplets,” dude, I get it, but I don’t.

Now, this is clearly a flaw in the questionnaire and not necessarily with the guys, but _come on_! Why make this harder than it has to be? I’m 40 and free: no stalker ex-husband, no personality disorders, no kids, no parents living at home. I have a mortgage, a motorcycle, and a dog. Some people think I’m lucky.

And then, on a date, I see that look. I know it well. It says, _Okay, so what’s_ wrong _with you?_

Again, I say, WTF?

Seems like a no-win situation here. I’ve been tempted to make up kids who live with their dad just to fit in, to seem more “normal.”

Sigh.

You know what? I’m just gonna go buy a mansion and a passel of cats. Maybe some Little House on the Prairie-style dresses. Throw out my thongs and stockings and makeup. That’s really what they’re expecting, right?

😉

So you haven’t met any guys without kids yet?

I sorta see that kind of response (if they are that socially aware) as a way of saying, hey I have a kid, are you okay with that, maybe throwing in the ex to make it clear they are divorced. My parents were nice enough to make me a priority over their dates and I really appreciate that now. It would have made the dating game much easier for both of them, but without fail, if they started getting close to someone, they would mention me and if they showed any hesitation or unpleasant reaction, it was a no deal then and there. I’ve only met a handful of potential step parents in my life, I’m sure there were at least 20 people I haven’t seen, between my mom and my dad.

Since you don’t want kids, it probably won’t work out too well if they have any, and that may be your sticking point? How does the conversation go when you meet a guy without kids?

TG: I like hanggliding.
You: Oh me too, we should go sometime!
TG: Oh but I left it at my exs, and blah blah blah. What exactly happens? Do they always leave their hangglider at their exs? Maybe you can suggest alternatives? Surely one activity can’t be the only bonding point in a potential LTR?

Well - not a no-win but a tough one for sure. Most guys getting close to your age who are single were probably married and have a kid somewhere …

At the same time if they have kids but have nothing to do with them, that could possibly being saying something in and of itself … and not just that the kids live on the other side of the country with their mom, right?

The other thing you have possibly working against you is the inverse of the thought process behind the lament I hear from my wife’s single friends: All the good ones are taken.

Hi Phya!

I have, but they were strange. One only called me if he wanted to see a movie and always tried to get me to pick up the tickets in advance. Then he’d race past the concession counter (“It’s a rip off!”). I can only imagine he’s a bad tipper. I wouldn’t know.

I see what you mean and maybe I’m misinterpreting their throwing all that out as TMI. After all, I’m not asking for a diamond ring, just a hang gliding date.

> [@](#):
>
> Since you don’t want kids, it probably won’t work out too well if they have any, and that may be your sticking point? How does the conversation go when you meet a guy without kids?

I’ve been open to dating guys with kids (why narrow the pool to the handful who don’t at my age?), and I’m not saying it’s a deal-breaker, it’s just … I don’t know. I have a lot of guy friends who tell me how they use time with their kids as an excuse to get out of spending time with a woman they aren’t sure about. (Several adjectives come to mind here, which I will politely refrain from sharing.)

I train people, so I’m sensitive to lame excuses.

Leaving your hang glider in the ex’s garage is fine, but when it starts sounding like a teen drama to retrieve the thing, I’m not so interested anymore because this guy is 1) not much of a problem solver, 2) not willing to commit to a simple date, 3) maybe not over the ex yet, and 4) shares too much too soon.

That’s just my take on it.

That would be awful! I haven’t had sex in so long, I’m pretty sure I’m a virgin again. When I find the right guy, he’ll have to dust me off.

Yep, and all my best girlfriends are gay men!

Nah, that’s not really true. But my best single girl girlfriends are having the same problem as me. And while I would say yes, a couple of them are spooky crazy, most are not and just want a decent companion to do stuff with and appreciate them. That’s all _I_ want.

I don’t feel like I’m on the same wavelength as these men I meet. I threw my pedestal away a loooong time ago. I can be complicated if I need to be, but it’s not my regular operating mode. I _am_ complex, but that’s because I’m smart. I thought men were supposed to be easy to understand, but that’s not really true. And frankly, it’s kind of offensive to meet some of these guys who really, truly think they’re some kind of great prize, and they’re just a regular, plain old guy with the same “special” qualities as the last five guys.

What a different world this would be if our girls were brought up the same way our boys are!

Hi. 🙂

Well, I can only imagine what the actual reasons are, but I can see that my dad made my existance clear because wanted to be able to share his relationship with his son, rather than keep it separate. He does not plan on marrying her, but he does plan on staying committed to her and wants to make sure that he can share his life with his son.

If you share your life with their kids, he cannot use his kids as an excuse. Going for a bike ride? How about you bring the kid(s) out this time? It’s not approriate for a first date, or maybe even a second, but if you guys are getting closer and he has kids, you’re going to be seeing them anyways. Maybe not all guys are like this, but I’m sure if guys could share _everything_ without fear of losing their woman (their tender times, their nerdy side, whatever) then it would be really easy to develop a relationship, no walls.

I know that if I have to hide my marijuana smoking a secret, the relationship will not last and I have seen what happens when a friend tries to do so, only to break up with her a couple weeks later. Secrets, walls, barriers, anything of that sort doesn’t belong in a healthy relationship.

If a guy wouldn’t accept your dog into his life, would you get rid of the dog or get rid of the guy? How special is a kid compared to a dog? That’s crazy special if you consider how special pets are to us. For the kind of guy you’re probably looking for, letting a new woman disrupt the relationship between them and their child doesn’t even have a chance. Only a deadbeat asshole drops their kid for a new date. That’s not the kind of guy you want to date anyways (like the movie guy perhaps).

So other than kids and leaving their equipment at their exs, are there any other excuses? Lames excuses should just be passed up on, but it doesn’t hurt to offer an alternative, fine, your stuff is at your exs and you cant get it for whatever reason. Don’t make the ex or the activity the focal point, the real reason you’re talking to him is because you want to spend some time with him, doing something enjoyable. So maybe just a walk then? Surely he hasn’t left all his footwear at his exs as well? There are plenty of things to do that don’t involve stuff left at an exs.

I’m 28 as of yesterday, and I can tell you what I’m looking for, if that helps.

Step 1 for me: Can we talk about absolutely nothing and carry a conversation for 10-30 mins? This is before name exchanges or any other personal detail. It gives of a non-invasive vibe, and it keeps some mystery of why I haven’t asked anything about her yet. (Or told her anything about me.)
Step 2: Get her to laugh. If she’s not having fun, no point in trying further.
Step 3: Name exchange and VERY basic personal info.
Step 4: More BS about nothing, but include some other interesting stories about personal info. Questions about her basic info are appropriate. Maybe a couple of jokes and teasing.
Step 5: Hey, you sound like a lot of fun. We could have a lot of fun together. Can we talk again?

That’s how I’m trying to meet girls. I’m not trying to get laid. I’m not trying to be creepy. I’m not playing any games. Just a nice guy who’s carrying a bit of mystery about him, looking for some chemistry. Chemistry is what draws us in and it makes it possible to find love in a perfect stranger. Otherwise, get used to making friends and waiting 6 months before you decide you want to try one of them out.

In my opinion, if he doesn’t follow that style of gameplan, he’s probably going to bug you after the first couple of dates. If he reveals too much or not enough, stay away. If he starts a big display of wealth power or control, stay the HELL away. Maybe things change in the 40+ bracket, but I doubt it. These are generally signs he’s either too into you (clingy), or too into himself (distant).

Now, what causes a guy like me to come up to a girl like you. It does take some level of physical attraction, but 90% of it is just the right look at the right time, and I’ll stew over it long enough to find some piddly thing to talk to you about.

If a girl approached me, I don’t have ANY idea what I’d do. It’s never happened before, but I just started using the 'pheromones. We’ll see on that one.
