Ok Im going to try really hard to say what I need to say w/o feeling like Im totally exposing myself here.

I read that [Instant Female Magic](https://a314.com/product/instant-female-magic/) could be good to help w/relaxing and possible emotional lows.
BUT it is out of stock totally.

I have clinical depression and I am being cared for by a doctor.
I started taking antidepressants when I was 21, and it does make a difference. I was hoping there was something I could try that would make life “easier” along w/the medication I am on.

I dont expect miracles but if something can help at all that would be great. I know phero’s are not “medicine” or anything like that, I just thought hey it’s worth a shot! Right?
Im already going to try Instant Shine.

Often I just feel really blah, no energy, no motivation, I am pretty sensitive and I tend to get my feelings hurt easily or feel guilty when I really shouldnt, and then you add PMS and the emotions just get rough.
I already have a doctor and therapist so that is not the issue.

So is there anything that might be able to help?

No there is no mone that is proven to help with clinical depression really.

Ishine is great and it is upbeat you may feel some euphoric effects with it but as your body acclimates to the vibe you notice it less

IFM caters more to the bad PMS mood as opposed to the feeling down mood.

They are both worth a try though. IFM is out right now but will be back

Any “mood booster” would be great. I just feel dull and blah.
I’ve always had really bad PMS, but it’s not just PMS its also during my period, so thats basically half the month. Hormones suck sometimes.

Well I will ask them about IFM again and see if and when it will be back. I know next week a lot will be on the shelves again but he didn’t mention that one specifically.

IFM is really great for PMS and Ishine takes care of the blahs for a lot of people. So while they may not effect the actual depression they can influence some of the issues your experiencing.

Hormones can suck sometimes unless you have the ability to influence them a little and you now have that 😉

I don’t know if this helps, but I just discovered that a combination of **IS/A** with a bit of **MX300** made me feel less sensitive and less likely to get my feelings hurt.

I just felt more “naturally” on the offensive, and tougher, less “fragile” than I occasionally feel. This was just one incident so far, though, that I’ve tried this on.

I will definitely try it again if I feel anxiety before interacting with someone who I know has a tendency to bully and be hurtful.

Thanks I appreciate that Tisha!
Yes, hormones are good as welll, so sometimes the suck and sometimes they dont lol. Im not on any kind of BC pills, it makes me nervous of the adverse effects they could have on me (I however have been on them in the past), one of which is weight gain and then other “stuff” (yes I am very techincal) it might effect me in a negative manner (though I know it can have postive effects as well, beyond the labeled use).

I take so many vitamins, supplements, the antideppresants, and antibiotics for my skin (a certain kind, that wont affect the useage of common antibiotics for bacterial illnesses) that bleh I just cant imagine adding anything else lol.

Thanks Sk thats good to know! Maybe once Ive tried this other stuff, I can get on the list or whatever to try the experimental phero’s.

I am for sure getting IS/B, [Instant Shine](https://a314.com/product/shine/), along w/other stuff, that hopefully wont affect my over all mood.
Im kinda nervous that some may make me irritable or bitchy, goodness knows I dont need that lol.

I hesitate to add to your burden of supplements and vitamins, but Tisha turned me on to the subject of nootropics a while back when in my unrelenting push to test every Putative Androtics has put out - I burned through all my neurotransmitters and got myself in one hell of a pickle.

Nootropics are considered brain boosters, and memory enhancers, but they do more, replenishing your neurotransmitters. It might be worth a shot to give them a try, since they shouldn’t interfere with your medications at all, and may help to lift your mood.

I also take 2000 mcg Vitamin C every day, and extra, extra B6 and B12. Vitamin C is necessary for Seratonin production, and the B6 and B12 are energy and mood lifting. Walnuts and bananas, I’ve heard, are good also, and Omega-3 fatty acids (I use Coramega - no fish taste or smell).

Oh that’s interesting Diane!
I take what I think is a very good women’s vitamin by Rainbowlight that also has hormonal support, along w/a lot of good vitamins in it.
I am also taking a separate essential fatty acid sup, although I admit I dont always take as much as I should, that pill is really a pill, freaking huge!
Also taking something called Tonalin CLA (conjugated linoleic acid)
It’s suppose to help you build muscle and help you burn fat (Im skeptical of the fat burning but meh).
I do exercerise, though w/the holidays Ive been slacking ha.
Not to mention other supplements, nothing harmful or anything w/caffiene or other stimulates, as I can almost guarantee those would only make things worse.

However, I really could use something for my memory/concentration. I feel like I forget stuff all of the time, it drives me crazy.
I feel like me and my dad are in the forgetful competition, but he has an excuse he’s 76! blah
I know this is also a symptom of the depression so it’s not too shocking but still highly annoying.

At this point Id almost rather have an injection of all this stuff than having to swallow it. I think me having to swallow all this stuff deters me from eating as much lol, so that might be helping w/my weight loss too lol. It makes me lose my appetite actually lol.

Hi AshesBlue,

I agree with Diane, vitamins do wonders! Seriously! But if you want to use vitamins for depression/anxiety/concentration etc you need much higher doses than you’ll find in a multivitamin. I take HIGH doses of VitB everyday… 1 Vit B comlplex and extra B12, B6 and B5. The B vitamins aren’t just good for depression and anxiety, they are really good for energy and concentration too. I use it for my ADD and it’s made a difference. It also has given me more energy. There’s a really brilliant book if you’re interested called “The food mood solution” by Jack Challem…tells you absolutely everything 🙂

Don’t be so quick to discount the CLA…the fatburing effects of it has been tested in clinical trials and it does work. It has a tendency to work especially on abdominal fat which is the reason (I think at least) it’s getting more attention within the medical research setting as carrying a lot of abdominal fat is linked to diabetes and heart disease. How much are you taking each day by the way? I think most clinical trials showed it was most effective when taking between 4-7g/day but don’t quote me on it. I can look it up if you’re interested?

Sure Im interested!
I initially looked at vitamin and hormonal support as I feel that my depression is somewhat hormonally related.
The vitamins I take tend to have most of the amount that was suggested to help support the thyroid.

as far as the CLA, this is what I take
[Swanson Best Weight-Control Formulas Tonalin CLA 1,000 mg 180 Sgels - Swanson Health Products](http://www.swansonvitamins.com/SWD042/ItemDetail?n=4294967188%2b71)

they are 1,000 mg per every two of the Tonalin CLA and I take 4 to 6 a day on average.

I had a feeling my thread would turn to supplements haha, phero’s can only do so much, but I had to ask. 😛

I have some stubborn body fat, that would be amazing to lose, some thats extra from weight gain and then some that I have had even when Ive been “thin”. That fat thats right under the belly button ugh!! I think that’s pretty common w/women?

The Tonalin is the one that was quoted as the most effective and with most consistent results in the reports I’ve read. It seems like you’re taking about the dose they used as well, if you take 6/day.

B vitamins help the thyroid too by the way… I think it’s B5 & B6 that are needed for thyroid hormone synthesis…that’s in the book too 🙄

About phero’s…well, they can’t cure depression, but I think they do have a transient effect that is beneficial and they can help boost your mood…even if it’s just temporary. 🙂

Thanks for the info! That’s good to know!
Ill have to look into the B vitamins. I just wish it was easier, as in not so many pills blah. I use to poopoo supplements to help me w/my depression/anxiety, I thought my case was a lost cause, but I also probably didnt take enough or long enough to see a difference. I think especially when I was younger, I wanted everything _right now_! :o

I dont think there’s anything that can cure depression, just try to manage it, but I understand what ya mean. Well I think many people only need temporary help, but for me this is most likely something I will deal w/the rest of my life, so anything that helps is great.
If only there were a magic pill to take. 🙂

I sometimes feel like Im having a meal of pills. 🙄

The problem with linoleic acid (omega-6 FA) is that an over abundance of this EFA is strongly linked with depression. Upping the intake of Omega-3 FA usually balances this out. It may be the culprit in your depression. Here’s a CME case study I did a while back through MedScape:

> [@](#):
>
> **Diets With High Omega-6:Omega-3 Ratios Enhance Risk for Depression, Inflammatory Disease CME**
>
> **News Author: Marlene Busko
> CME Author: Hien T. Nghiem, MD**

>
> file:///C:/Users/PURPLE%7E1/AppData/Local/Temp/msohtmlclip1/01/clip\_image002.gif
>
> April 26, 2007 — In a recent small study, older adults who had diets high in omega-6 fatty acids and low in omega-3 fatty acids had high levels of proinflammatory cytokines; this was especially true when they had coexisting depressive symptoms. These findings are published online in the March 30 Early Release issue and in the April print issue of _Psychosomatic Medicine._
>
> Lead author Janice K. Kiecolt-Glaser, PhD, from Ohio State University in Columbus, told Medscape: “The major finding here is that yes, [diet] matters, and it probably matters more in people who have high levels of depressive symptoms.” She added that this study provides evidence that diet seems to be very important in the way that people respond to depression and stress, and that “diet is not just a sideline player.”
>
> The authors explain that prior studies have shown that both depression and stress can enhance the production of proinflammatory cytokines. These cytokines — including interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) — influence the onset and course of many conditions associated with aging, including cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and arthritis.
>
> The group writes that in addition, the fatty acid composition of the Western diet changed “dramatically” after 1913, when refined vegetable oil, a major source of omega-6 fatty acids, entered the diet (in the form of margarine, etc), and there was also a decrease in the consumption of foods high in omega-3 fatty acid such as fish, wild game, nuts, seeds, and green, leafy vegetables. Whereas the early hunter-gatherers had a dietary omega-6/Omega-3 ratio ratio of 2:1 to 3:1, this ratio is now 15:1 to 17:1 in North America today.
>
> It is believed that these dietary changes might be related to increases in inflammatory-related diseases, including depression and cardiovascular disease, the group writes. They also note that in a “provocative” study by Maes and colleagues published in the May 15, 2000, issue of _Biological Psychiatry_, students who had higher omega-6/Omega-3 ratios before examinations showed larger increases in inflammatory responses when they were stressed during examinations.
>
> The current group sought to examine the intersection of behavior, immune function, and diet, Dr. Kiecolt-Glaser said. Specifically, they investigated the relationship between depressive symptoms, the omega-6/Omega-3 ratio, and serum levels of IL-6, the IL-6 soluble receptor, and TNF-α.
>
> The researchers recruited 43 adults: 18 caregivers (who cared for spouses with Alzheimer’s disease) and 25 noncaregivers. The participants had a mean age of 67 years (range, 40 - 86 years [only 1 subject younger than 50 years]). The authors chose to study an older population because proinflammatory cytokine production is increased in older individuals. They selected caregivers since they have higher levels of depressive symptoms than noncaregivers.
>
> The participants completed a Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) survey, which assessed the severity of their depressive symptoms. The authors measured the participants’ blood levels of IL-6, IL-6 soluble receptor, TNF-α, and fatty acids.
>
> **Diet Seemed to Affect Depression-Related Inflammation**
>
> The authors found that at higher levels of depressive symptoms, as the omega-6-Omega-3 ratio ratio increased, there was a marked increase in proinflammatory cytokine levels. “In individuals with low levels of depressive symptoms, diet didn’t matter much in terms of inflammation,” Dr. Kiecolt-Glaser said. “But if you had higher levels of depressive symptoms and your diet was poor in terms of the relative balance in omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, the increases in proinflammatory cytokines IL-6 and TNF-α really escalated.”
>
> They also found that, compared with the study participants who did not have syndromal depression, the 6 participants who had depression had significantly higher omega-6-Omega-3 ratio ratios and higher levels of proinflammatory cytokines.
>
> **“Important” Preliminary Findings, Larger Study Planned**
>
> When people are stressed and depressed, diets are poorer, since people do not usually eat more fruits and vegetables, Dr. Kiecolt-Glaser noted. She added that “any way that people get more omega-3 and less omega-6 is probably good.”
>
> The group concludes, “Our findings highlight ways in which diet may enhance or inhibit depression-related inflammation among older adults. These behavior-dietary-immune interactions have important implications for both mental and physical health.” The authors are beginning a larger trial to investigate this further.
>
> _Psychosom Med_. 2007;69:217-224.
>
> **Clinical Context**
>
> Depression is the most common psychiatric illness and is linked to the development of coronary heart disease. Depression and stress promote proinflammatory cytokine production. Dietary intakes of omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) also influence inflammation; high omega-6/Omega-3 ratios enhance proinflammatory cytokine production, although omega-3 has anti-inflammatory properties. The importance of proinflammatory cytokines is demonstrated in their relation to the onset and course of a spectrum of conditions associated with aging, including not only coronary heart disease but also osteoporosis, arthritis, type 2 diabetes, approximately 15% of cancers, Alzheimer’s disease, and periodontal disease.
>
> The aim of this study is to address how interactions between PUFA levels and depressive symptoms are related to proinflammatory cytokine synthesis.
>
> **Study Highlights**
>
> - In the current study, blood samples from 43 older adults (mean age, 66.67 years; SD, 10.09) provided data on PUFAs and TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-6 soluble receptor.
> - Depressive symptoms were assessed with the CES-D.
> - Results demonstrated that depressive symptoms and omega-6/Omega-3 ratios worked together to enhance proinflammatory cytokines beyond the contribution provided by either variable alone.
> - The amount of variance explained by the interactions alone was substantial — 13% for IL-6 and 31% for TNF-α — whereas the full models accounted for 18% and 40%, respectively.
> - Although predicted cytokine levels were consistent across omega-6/Omega-3 ratios with low levels of depressive symptoms, as depressive symptoms increased, there were significantly higher omega-6/Omega-3 ratios as well as higher TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-6 soluble receptor levels.
> - 6 individuals who met the criteria for major depressive disorder had higher omega-6/Omega-3 ratios and TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-6 soluble receptor levels than those who did not meet the criteria; excluding these 6 individuals reduced the variance explained by the depressive symptoms and omega-6/Omega-3 ratio interaction.
> - Higher levels of IL-6 soluble receptor were associated with higher omega-6/Omega-3 ratios.
> - Sociodemographic and health behavior variables were evaluated as potential confounders or effect modifiers: none of age, level of education, body mass index, hours of sleep prior night, or exercise were significantly correlated with cytokine levels, fatty acid levels, or depressive symptoms (all _P_ \> .18).
> - Medication use and chronic health problems were also considered as potential confounders; however, no significant interactions were found.
> - Limitations of this study include its cross-sectional nature and small sample size.

Hey Ashes,

Try this tread for the phero/depression connection: [Pheromones to Treat Depression](https://pheromonetalk.com/t/pheromones-to-treat-depression/65), Futurist, and alot of the other posters in this thread, are some of the most knowledgable people that we have ever had on this forum.

This is one of the realated threads listed at the bottom of the page. You can also click on the tags in the lower left. Could even do it the old fashioned way, and enter terms in the search box at the top. This forum has been around long enough that you can find disscussions on almost any subject. (I haven’t tried a search for penguins yet)

As to your diet question, River’s [New phero diet plan?](https://pheromonetalk.com/t/new-phero-diet-plan/19841) thread is probably one of the best.

Diane,
I only wish my depression was linked to a supplement.
Unfortunately, Ive lived w/depression longer than I lived w/o it, ie about two decades. While Ive only been taking the CLA for a couple of weeks.
I appreciate your research as always though. 🙂

Yeah Ive thought of that too, I will keep an eye on it, it’s nearly impossible not to. lol
So, far I havent noticed any changes. My struggles w/weight loss also add to my depression as well, so I have to keep all things in mind, pros vs cons and all that good stuff.
Im 30lbs over weight not something a doctor considers needing any medical help ither. The whole thing is a struggle really, and an annoying cycle. I just have to keep trying.

Thanks again! 😃

> About phero’s…well, they can’t cure depression, but I think they do have a transient effect that is beneficial and they can help boost your mood…even if it’s just temporary. 🙂

Yep, pheros won’t help with the _clinical_ side of things, AshesBlue, but they may help with the _behavioural_ side of things. In short, a new pheromone-hobby (like any other hobby in some respects) may be something that you will find a useful adjunct to clinical therapy. Some pheros do have the added bonus that they affect the wearer’s mood for the better, temporarily, but this shouldn’t be relied on. But going out testing various [pheromone products](https://a314.com/shop/) is undoubtedly fun, and educational, in the sense that you can learn a lot about yourself and other people. And getting into the intricacies of pheromone-enhanced social engineering is a great activity 😃

Oh yeah! I remember that epic thread 🙂 Again, AshesBlue, these are just folks’ personal anecdotes, and YMMV, but there do seem to be cases of unexpected ancillary benefits from pheromone use!

Not to mention the added benefit that others around you respond to them in socially strengthening ways, like paying attention, giving you inviting body signals, talking to you, listening to you, treating you kindly or with respect or with interest, and all that other jazz.

That all sounds very exciting, I dont get out very much so I dont have many to test it out on lol. Hopefully I can encourage my bf do come w/me to some social “experiments”.

I made my first order a few days ago, Im trying not to think about it much or have any expectations.

It’s about helping w/the symptoms that all together add up to depression. Ive noticed that there are phero’s that say they can help w/things that happen to be related to depression.
