So this is my first REAL job.

I’ve had it for almost a month now.

There are lots of issues with it…like not following health code, or not paying minimum wage, or not dividing the pooled tips evenly, or…

Yeah. Lots of issues.

I work for a Korean-run Japanese restaurant (Yeah go ahead and try to figure THAT one out).

They hire mainly Koreans and a couple of “cute” white girls.

I’m a halfie. Not a “real” asian.

Anyway, for my interview it was this:

“Hello.”
“Hello!”
“When are you free to work?”
“Blah blah blah”
“Okay. So, I see you smile at me and I think you will make customer happy. You start training Monday”.

Okay…so I’ve been training for nearly a month now.

All the other trainees (aside from one other white girl) have taken the “server” test and now get tips.

The other trainees worked 2 days out of the week and after 2 weeks they’re full servers. I work 5 days a week! It’s been almost a month.

Are you kidding me? And every time I work and they Korean workers come in, the boss or manager says to give them a free ice cream or chef sushi. I’ve come in several times…nothing.

On work, we get employee meals. We can choose from a handful of items, but not everything. Whenever other people ask the manager “can I try this tonight” he’s like “Oh, sure!”

I tried asking: “Umm…I’m not working it today and the sushi makers back there won’t make it for you- blah blah blah I’m just trying to come up with an excuse even though I’d tell the sushi makers to make it for you if you were Korean like So-and-so”

I mean, it’s not about the free stuff. It’s about the blatant favoritism of Koreans.

I get blamed for everything that goes wrong, even when I’m covering every one else’s jobs while they slack off.

My co-workers go home with almost $100 bucks each night. Me? $37. They tried to pay me the wrong amount of hours and wrong pay. My Korean co-worker told me “Oh well, you don’t really work here so it doesn’t matter what they pay you”. WTF?

Although I’m still a “trainee” they have me scheduled just like a regular server. I have my own section to wait on and bus, and no one helps me.

Today (like last week) I worked with one server. A Sunday lunch shift with one server and one “trainee”?

WTF.

We had two reservations of 15+ people plus the rest of the restaurant. I took a 15 people party by myself. The gratuity for that ONE table was more than I make in a day…and it ALL GOES TO THE OTHER SERVER.

Today, someone didn’t take the FAX order to the chefs

I ordered my employee meal togo since I was already past my working shift and still working.

The Fax ordered the same meal as me plus a sushi, so I said “Here, take mine. I’ll just order another”.

Instead of “Thank you” I got reprimanded by the manager saying that I’m not allowed to order my employee meal to go unless we’re really busy.

WTF? We WERE really busy! The manager had to help us by taking a section during the reservation time.

I just don’t understand why I keep getting yelled at when I’m working my ass off covering for everyone else.

I’m tired, I want to quit, and I’m done being treated poorly.

You gotta find another job. Anyone who treats you like that as an employee from the start will never treat you any better.

If you were in CA, I could probably hook you up with a pretty decent paying job. Not as good as serving but its cake and you arent treated like shit.

Yup - this. In buckets. You need to get yourself a new job. 🙂

Yeah. I want to quit. I’m just worried it’ll look bad for my future interviews. I hate the idea of being called a quitter as well.

I have to say that, walking off one of my early jobs because of the amount of shit I was expected to swallow was probably the best thing I could have done. I never really looked back after that! 🙂

I worked for a large department in one job. We got a new department head - the guy was a flaming a$$hole. He just made everyone’s life miserable, not just mine, but after a while I began to think that maybe I was the problem. Luckily I got transfered to a different though smaller department which immediately made me the department assistant manager. Life became instantly better. If my boss was not there I had to go to his upper level meetings. At several of those meetings the high level managers would all comment about how my old boss was an a$$hole, not a team player, worst leader/manager that they had ever seen, could not believe he had gotten that far, etc.. Finally they got rid of him, but only after he had made that department a living hell for way too long.

Like Mobo said, get out quickly. Life is too short to work for jerks like that.

I’m going to look for a better job as soon as I can…which probably won’t be for a while unfortunately. I just wish it didn’t have to be this way. I only got a job because I wanted to have SOMETHING on my resumes aside from selling goods on eBay or to friends.

Thanks for your advice, everyone. I really appreciate it.

Have the loveliest of days,

Luci

LucidDreamer, Selling goods on ebay? Have you ever thought about becoming a personal shopper in your area? The holiday season is just around the corner. ODG

Yes. I’ve always wanted to do that as I tend to be a bit of a bargain queen (hence the items I sell for very cheap on eBay)… xD

I just have no idea how to get hired for that sort of thing. xD

So they didn’t call me to let me know I had any hours and was concerned.

I called three times and after no replies, went in to check the listed schedule.

They had me down for Sunday morning. So I came in today.

Apparently I wasn’t supposed to be there today. They marked over my name and had a new trainee in my spot. And then he said “Don’t follow the schedule back there. It’s not important” followed by “we need to talk”.

Yay! Talking time…What I got back was “we can’t schedule any more hours for you” “everyone is afraid to work with you” “others say you don’t do things right and when they ask you say ‘I already did it’” (which makes me know it’s the sushi makers that were the “everyone” force that he was talking about because it’s not true. One sushi maker asked me if I had called back the Crunch for the crunch roll and no one heard me the small half Asian girl so I MUST be a LIAR). I “need to work harder” because I’m “not a harder worker” and I “don’t listen” because if I “listen harder” to unsaid words then I will be able to stay. So basically let me yell at you, tell you how bad you are, apologize and you can return to us mistreating you on a trial basis for another week because we have invested too much below minimum wage money in your training.

I told him that I had been overworking and that it felt as if no one was seeing the hard work or sacrifices I had been making for the company like giving up church to work Sunday mornings or my own employee meal for someone else’s mistake. I told him how if I had been giving more than my best that it would do shame to the company to keep such a poor worker around, and how I didn’t want to cause any more problems for the company.

Because I wasn’t going to stay, he got mad and told me that another company wouldn’t hire me. There are two types of people. Person A who makes mistake and works again to fix it and Person B who makes the same mistake but doesn’t fix it. He said if I left, I’d be like Person B who will just get fired again.

I told him the truth. I told him that I didn’t need a job, and that I had only decided to work there because I loved the restaurant and had gone to eat there all the time last year.

He was stuck. So he just repeated that I should stick around and work harder.

I was crying. I always cry when something not true is assumed about me. I worked my butt off covering for other people, always asking if anyone needed my help instead of relaxing or avoiding work like the other servers. That’s why it hurt. I actually cared about a cold, selfish company and got stung in the end.

You know what he said to me as I left in tears? A cold company slogan: “Have a good day!”

Anyway, I’m free now. No more taking other people’s crap. Back to eBay for me. At least there, I can click a fun little button for mean people: “Delete”.

I hope you gave him the finger! So here’s the next step. Try to gather yourself together and find some that makes you happy. Then try to find another job. In your job application they’ll ask for the reason for leaving your previous job. Just write in " You left for personal reasons." During the job interview if they ask just say " It’s personal. I rather not discuss this at all." From there on this guy has nothing on you. Try using [pheromones](https://a314.com/) in a business application. There is always another reason for joining this club, right? I hope your doing better. Good luck in job hunting. ODG
