It’s insidious stuff. Back when they made cola with sugar an 8oz bottle would quench your thirst and fill you up. When they started making it with HFCS the bottles started getting bigger and bigger and so did America’s waistline. I take responsibilty for my own fatness but I really believe High Fructose Corn Syrup is an accomplice for a lot of reasons.

High fructose corn syrup is pure and simple. 🙂 Right. Pure and simple propaganda is more like it. Think of it this way…it clogs your arteries in the very same manner that saturated fat does. Think about that next time ya wanna pop!

There are several brands of soda on the market that are made with _real sugar_. Two of the ones that come to mind (available in my area) are Blue Sky and Hank’s, which of course is a favorite. 🙂 I don’t drink much soda but when I do I want the real thing.

Good one Steve **O. 😉** And yeah, ren, it’s insidious…it’s in everything…it’s like the Borg. 😮 🙄 ☹

Well not all saturated fats are bad for you though! Take coconut oil for instance: MCFA and extremely good for you, better than any deadly vegetable (SOY) oil. The Soy marketing is killing us and turning men into sissy’s.

But I do know what you mean otherwise 😃

Yeah, traditional fermented soy products and tofu are fine, and therefore not carciogenic in nature,
As you say the mass produced and processed soy products that are really not good for man or beast, which are touted to be anti cancerous but in reality they are, especially if consumed as a daily staple as the producers would really like them to be used as.

Also organic coconut oil is a really good produce and is good for man, I was using 2 teaspoons a day with good effect, but i have had to stop because of the small side effect of an um rectal itch occuring ☹

I keep well away from hydrogenated oils, and on the rare occasions that i take my girl out for some fried fish, chips, calamari, and prawn cutlets i do notice that because of the cookong oils used my poor tummy feels somewhat taxed the next day ect.

I must say i am a bit partial to a cola drink and i also drink the real thing with sugar rather than the artificial sweeteners.

i drink everything with splenda..tastes the same to me and after a while you get use to it

i gave up worrying about what is good or bad for you, one year they tell you this is bad, next year they tell you that is bad, to me as long as you can keep your weight off and look great and your blood tests come back good then that is all that matters.

Wow, that ad really pissed me off (the first one). There is an ever-growing stack of peer-reviewed scientific studies showing high fructose corn syrup is worse for us than sucrose.

FYI there are also more and more studies showing that artificial sweeteners are keeping people fat also, possibly by affecting insulin and blood sugar in some yet to be understood way. I stopped drinking diet sodas and am down to one splenda packet in my coffee per day.

Butterfly- Thats friggin awesome!

If you live in California, you can get Coca-Cola made with real sugar! Any Coke that is bottled in Mexico uses real cane sugar. Just look for the refillable glass bottles with the white sticky nutrition labels pasted clumsily on the side. My Costco carries them by the case.

The artificial sweeteners still probably spike our insulin levels… if they do… then our body will store any fat we eat while drinking the sweeteners. Your bodys till uses the sweetener for energy… it’s more convenient. All the fat you eat just gets stored away… for a time when… well… whenever it’s not getting anything easier to use as fuel 🙂

Fructose and sucrose are both just empty calories. Fructose has a lower glycemic index (spikes your blood sugar less) and gives you the same sweetness for about half the calories. What is the rational for high fructose corn syrup being _ **worse** _ than sugar?

HFCS is fructose and glucose mixed together.

I don’t know about other people, but when I consume products that have HFCS in the ingredients, I feel more sluggish, my blood sugar gets out of whack, I’m more prone to colds, insomnia, digestive upset, etc. This is usually when I get in a habit of drinking a soda every day, as my diet is usually very strict and organic, or at least non-processed. I’ve done a lot of elimination diets in the past due to multiple food allergies, and I can unequivocally state that HFCS causes me a host of problems.

If I want something sweetened, I generally opt for agave nectar or stevia. I’ll use Splenda if it’s all that’s available and I can’t stand something to be unsweetened, but I don’t exactly trust it either since long term effects were never studied.

Warren, I’m no expert nutritionist so I could be wrong, but my understanding is that it is actually easier for the liver to turn fructose into a lipid than to turn it into glucose. That’s why it doesn’t spike your glucose level. Of course, the body finds it easier to store those lipids as fat than it would be convert glucose to a lipid and store it.

The other problem with HFCS is that it is so cheap food producers will add it to foods that they might not add a more expensive sugar to. Hamburger buns are getting sweeter than a pastry would have been thirty years ago.

I don’t blame the calorie industrial complex for my disciplinary shortcomings, but it’s tempting.

There are quite a few scientific studies demonstrating that HFCS causes obesity more so than sucrose. Data include demographic trends (which suggest but do not demonstrate cause), clinical studies, and animal studies. The underlying explanation has not been clearly demonstrated, but there is a pretty clear case for saying the stuff isn’t good for you. Here is the abstract of a review paper:

Consumption of high-fructose corn syrup in beverages may play a
role in the epidemic of obesity1,2
George A Bray, Samara Joy Nielsen, and Barry M Popkin
ABSTRACT
Obesity is a major epidemic, but its causes are still unclear. In this
article, we investigate the relation between the intake of highfructose
corn syrup (HFCS) and the development of obesity. We
analyzed food consumption patterns by using US Department of
Agriculture food consumption tables from 1967 to 2000. The consumption
of HFCS increased 1000% between 1970 and 1990, far
exceeding the changes in intake of any other food or food group.
HFCS now represents 40% of caloric sweeteners added to foods
and beverages and is the sole caloric sweetener in soft drinks in the
United States. Our most conservative estimate of the consumption of
HFCS indicates a daily average of 132 kcal for all Americans aged
2 y, and the top 20% of consumers of caloric sweeteners ingest
316 kcal from HFCS/d. The increased use ofHFCSin the United States
mirrors the rapid increase in obesity. The digestion, absorption, and
metabolism of fructose differ from those of glucose. Hepatic metabolism
of fructose favors de novo lipogenesis. In addition, unlike glucose,
fructose does not stimulate insulin secretion or enhance leptin production.
Because insulin and leptin act as key afferent signals in the regulation
of food intake and body weight, this suggests that dietary fructose
may contribute to increased energy intake and weight gain. Furthermore,
calorically sweetened beverages may enhance caloric overconsumption.
Thus, the increase in consumption of HFCS has a temporal
relation to the epidemic of obesity, and the overconsumption of HFCS
in calorically sweetened beverages may play a role in the epidemic of
obesity. Am J Clin Nutr 2004;79:537–43.
