OK guys, don’t laugh, just try this: buy yourself a parsnip, cut it, and then add it to boiling water with some sort of neutral smelling oil (for fixation). Smell it, and tell me what you think.

After this little accidental discovery (was making a pan of soup, lol) I did a google search, and guess what comes up? Parsnip oil is actually being used by hunters to lure wild animals!

Parsnip, it has such a ring. It also contains androstenone. Here is the source! Great discovery!

Cool, i’ll add that to my list of plant containing [pheromones](https://pheromonelabs.com/shop/).

BTW, almost all plants, animals, grasses, bugs contain pheromones…

**"Pheromones** also exist in **plants** :certain **plants** emit alarm **pheromones** when grazed upon, resulting in tannin production in neighboring **plants**."

Hmmm, never noticed it in celery, wonder in which part of the plant it’s found.

In parsnip I detected it instantly, very strong, and it lasted rather long before the heat destroyed it.

Btw, the oil they sell in huntershops is from the seeds. But the root has a very nice other aroma as well, a bit spicey and exotic, not unlike cinnamon and I’m not so sure that this will be present in the oil as well, because it’s mostly from the skin of the root. If you peel it, the scent (and thus the taste) is much less after you cook it, that’s how I know.

O, and I was hoping for something a bit more exiting then just -none. 🆒

Wonder if the -none smell is part of the reason parsnips being not exactely the most populair vegetables in today’s kitchens…

I don’t know if it contains any other pheromones, but I do know that androstenone enhances body odor constituents. I assume that androstenone could also enhance things that don’t smell bad, such as the exotic scent of the parsnip (wow that sounds funny)

I think you will have to eat a truckload of parsnip to get any effect.

Raw that is, because cooking will just destroy the mones. 🆒

I wish I knew what kind of animals are atracted by the oil. Maybe wild pigs (or how do you call them in english?), or bears.

Can’t imagine the big cats will risk their lives for it, 😃 or the wolves for that matter.

Deer may respond, wild boars would. They have androstenone in their saliva to attract a female mate. Truffles have androstenone as well. It is theorized that this is why boars can find truffles.

Has anyone tried using this in some mix? A mix with EO’s perhaps?
