I suffer from severe depression. It is physiological and compounded by stress. My cat comes near me more during these times and although I am grateful, I wondered if any research has been done on this aspect of depression. That is why I joined this site. Can anyone tell me if there has been research done? If not I would be more than willing to be the first guinea pig for this type of research.pets

Hey there,

Its hard to imagine depression to be caused by olfactory reasons. [Pheromones](https://pheromonelabs.com/shop/) will instigate a physiological response whether self wise or from others but I highly doubt it’ll give you any “cure” type response of depression. I think this is more of a job of a psychiatrist as well as a good therapist…anyway. Tell use more about yourself so we can give you the 25 dollar gift certificate. Just tell us what your like and what you would like to achieve from mones.

take care of yourself =)

Hi there,

Anyone with depression and similar disorders should avoid the use of pheromones because they suffer from an imbalance in brain chemistry. Pheros tend to “use up” your neurotransmitters and can make the problem worse.

Welcome.

You’ve asked an interesting question. I’m not aware of such research, but a connection seems likely. Animals do pick up on moods, and smell is a likely means.

Another interesting possibility is the use of something like io to enhance social interaction and lift mood through increased interaction with others.

Tezza mentions an interesting possibility of effects on neurotransmitters. Certainly I’ve felt effects like having to take a nap the first time I tried certain products. These effects went away with subsequent uses though. This area has not been completely mapped out, and Tezza’s caveat certainly bears consideration.

I was diagnosed at 18 with manic depression/bi polar. I am 47 now, take meds but when the depression gets to be too much, my cat senses it. my husband died to complications of Acute Mylogenous Leukemia. They should rename the sickness insideious. Two weeks after his death, the same hospital called and asked where he was. They found a donor for him and that nearly killed me. i wish to God it had, as I have no children and no reason why i am still living. I am not suicidal, merely cursing the daylight.

I came to this website to find answers. like there are any. I have moved majorly twice since his death and have been hospitalized once for the severity of the depression, and for an overdose of meds brought on by a hospital oversite.

A fellow sufferer likens it to this…It is very difficult to pull yourself up from your bootstraps when you have lost your boots and are flat on your back. There are days like today when i feel i am not worthy of such kind words.

I came on to this site because i need to know if there is research out there that would be a diagnostic for people like me. If I could only learn of the triggers so I can break the patterns that cause this.

Rand understood and likened it to diabetes. He never missed a single appointment and held me when I wept.

I know the importance of smell. I still have a jacket that holds his scent if possible after almost 6 years since he wore it.

As you are well aware, it is possible.

Barala, I have suffered from clinical depression in the past, although nothing like you are suffering now. I wish we could help you more. Nutrition and exercise may help you. Check out Nora Gedgaudas’ book _Primal Body, Primal Mind_ for a lot of useful information on how what you eat affects your mind. Also read the book _How To Walk Your Blues Away_, it’s only short but very good.

I don’t know why your cat comes near you more when you are depressed, but animals can sense their owners’ moods and will respond, especially if the pet and the owner have a good relationship.

Good luck, and know that everyone here on the forum is very friendly and only too happy to help.
