The top joint on my left thumb will not bend all the way, not even if you try to force it. It’s been like this since I can remember and it makes it a lot harder to use. Is there any way I can get around this?

I’d see a orthopedic doctor and see what they say. It sounds like bit of a hand deformity but I dunno what to say. What you telling me reminds of a case I saw on Royal Pains. Its a fictitious show obviously but the golfer he was trying to fix his hand, his fingers were so odd looking they seemed more like claws than fingers. Maybe theres something to put your thumb back in the right place so you have full mobility. Just want to say something in case noone else answers.

_stares at Tisha’s butt long enough to see if she’ll turn around to see that I’m waving her down to give a little perspective on this case_

Tisha is like AD’s Columbo 🆒

I am not a doctor but recently I broke two of my fingers so I did a little research when that occured.

If your thumb has been that way as long as you remember you probably did something to your hand when you were to small to remember or were born that way. Since it the top part of your thumb your flexor tendon is probably the most likely suspect.

8 or 9 different muscles in your hand and forearm come into play when you use your thumb. Have you ever torn anything in the hand or wrist ? You could have injured your wrist and it would effect your thumb joint. It could also be your hinge joint is either malformed or has been broken and it healed wrong.

You mentioned you cant even force it. Do you mean that it just will not bend or that it hurts to force it to bend ? If it just hurts you could probably do wrist, hand and finger exercises to get more mobility to it. If it will not budge at all its probably something a hand doctor would have to look at.

It may make your learning to play the guitar more challenging but with practice you will adapt the way you play to fit your hand. You just got to work a little harder then those will bendable thumbs 😉

It won’t even bend at all. I guess I’ll have to work around it, or learn to play left handed.
