I realize this thread was a year old when somebody resurrected it, and I have no idea how or if things have changed since then but a few things to consider on perspective.

You didn’t have the song down that you wanted to play for a concert…consider how many guys don’t even know how to play and the closest they’ll ever get to doing a concert is getting the high score on fuckin guitar hero in front of a few friends.

You lost a match, how many people do you know that can even play? It’s like losing the superbowl for a football player, sure it sucks, but you played the biggest game in the sport while hundreds of guys never even get drafted to the league.

Don’t look at each individual victory or defeat as a stand alone event that effects you, consider instead the level you’re playing at. Pro Athletes are the best example of what I mean. Good luck finding one that hasn’t lost a game, or even fucked up royally fumbling a ball or making a horrifically bad shot, yet when they appear in public they’re treated like the MVP of the championship team…because regardless of the fact that they lose sometimes too, everyone knows they lose playing at a higher level than we win at. Every time you feel like you’ve been defeated, consider there are a lot of guys that lack the talent or skill to even compete in the area that you’re at. Whether music, or sports, or academics.

I’m not suggesting complacency, just don’t let a defeat effect your sense of self worth. In fact, how you handle defeats and setbacks says more about the quality of man you are than how you enjoy victories. Learn to look at them as lessons. When you were learning your instrument you didn’t know a whammy bar from a snickers bar, but you approached it with the sense of “I can learn to handle this”. Now you get little obstacles and challenges, consider them the way you did your lessons with an “ok how can I modify my thinking to get past this and be a better person than I am now”
