> Warren… you have some interesting observations but let’s get more specific… how do you think TAK would help out our imperiled cave man that’s being attacked by a saber-tooth tiger, or perhaps facing some other problem where he needs the help of other cave-people? Keep in mind that pheromones are primarily about communication, not self-effects. What kind of message do you think TAK is sending, what is its purpose? Why does it seem to affect both men and women the same, what survival utility does that bring to the table?

In my previous discussion I was attempting to demonstrate that dissociation, in the abstract, might be healthy and beneficial.

> In the case of dissociation, Daedelus describes “depersonalization/derealization” as “extremely unhealthy if it persists” and questions why a chemical response would evolve to make us feel “wierded out”. Are there situations where dissociation is, in fact, healthy? Consider again the primal horde. Mankind’s advantage over the beast is not our greater strength or sharper teeth. It is our superior intelligence and teamwork. The ability of the individual to dissociate himself from his individual body and identify with the team, seeing the larger formation of the hunting party, is essential. Our ill-fated hunter in the grasp of the beast, if he is to avoid panic and have any chance at all, must dissociate from his mangled body and see the bigger picture from without.

You are asking how would the effects of TAK specifically would serve a purpose, as a form of communication. Of course, we don’t know what TAK is. If we knew it were, for example, the breakdown product of a specific hormone, we could look at situations when that hormone was at high levels and ask what might need to be communicated to to others. But we don’t know that so I’m really just taking a shot in the dark here. But how might effects like those of TAK serve a function?

Picture the primal horde. I don’t see them in caves, but in an encampment of tents or wigwams (or whatever the politically correct term is). Some of the women are picking berries in the meadow. Some are washing clothes in the stream. Children are playing in the field. Perhaps the men are resting after the hunt.

The women chatter and bang around their pots of berrys or rocks in the stream, because that’s what women do. They can’t help it, women are noisey. It serves a survival function. Children cannot get lost – they just follow the sound of the chatter back home.

Now danger approaches. Perhaps it is that saber-tooth tiger again looking for a tender young human for lunch. Or maybe it is a war party from the tribe across the valley. Now, all that chatter says, “Here I am; come kill me.”

TAK says quiet down and don’t panic. The next thing TAK says is quit identifying with your selfish self. An every man for himself attitude is going to get people killed. They need to dissociate from their individuality and function as a team to protect the village. _Every_body, male and female, needs to get that message immediately and quietly.
