Aha… alright, if on a scale of one to ten, **“that’s not at all funny”…**
where would you put this ? Catch that statistic that whizzes by, 18% with traumatic brain injury ? What would you like to bet the real number is higher, those with borderline TBI ? 30-40% in combat ?.. And yet… this barely registers on the public scale of attention ? Your enlightening thoughts ?

I know your question is addressed to smn1234, but I read this and was thinking, didn’t Bush fall off his bicycle a few years back? That would explain a lot.

Now that’s funny. Every other TBI injury, not funny.

Cheers,

🆒 Quicksilver

P.S. Do you have some info on lingering effects caused by DU rounds?

Also not funny.

DU is hideous f\*cked up (or effective, if you look at it that way) ordnance… potent as hell for armor penetration though, I recall metallic U is around 60% denser than lead, however is a hard metal, and “best” of all, has an unusual property of being pyrophoric… a pyrophoric metal, like magnesium used in fireworks, will burn at high temperatures, acting like a heat bomb at the intensities of an arc welder… what happens when a DU penetrator hits an armor plate is that the point concentration of kinetic energy (that much mass going that quickly in that small amount of area) first punches a hole, then vaporizes the Uranium, which then explodes in a uranium-oxygen fireball inside the thing getting shot at… Uranium is a very strange metal, it imparts strong colors in ceramics and glasses, so was at one time a popular ceramic glaze colorant (brilliant oranges and greens… nothing looks exactly like the magical uranium green glaze)… however, when a DU penetrator splats through armor, it is heated to about 3500 centigrade, or so I am told, then the secondary internal detonation is a great bright green flash of U gas burning… witnesses describe this as a near psychedelic thing to see at night… so much for the theory that DU stays contained in jacketed projectiles… believe it or not, DU also has certian civilian applications, like the keels of ultra-high end yachts and maybe things like custom made putters for the absolute afficianados who want to emulate Tiger Woods…

the other thing about DU is it is damn expensive stuff… I mean just off the charts compared to convention metallurgy, so where are we obtaining this quantity to use as combat projectiles ?, who the hell is actually machining it and putting it into brass casings ?, (BTW… uranium is extremely hard to machine, and also very risky because it sheds so much U dust, being a brittle metal)… and, ummmm… how much is this costing us directly ? how much is the long term clean up going to cost indirectly ?

_“The hardness of the projectile core is 48 and 49 HR measured by the ROCKWELL method”_
\*\*
Now this is confusing to me because some have said that DU is as soft as lead in its native form… so I compared the Young’s Modulus
of pure lead (YM approx 16) to pure uranium (YM 208) to pure iron (YM211) and pure tungsten (YM 411)… based on this, DU is going to behave much more closely to the steels than anything like lead…

Except for two things, uranium is both moderately chemo-toxic… meaning even is there were no consideration of radioative particle emissions, it is fundamentally poisonous in water, air, soils… AND it is also radio-toxic…again the establishement view is that low levels of alpha emissions don’t pose health risks above those of lead…

So far, that’s the “industry viewpoint” as per Jane’s:

“As to its “heavy metal” toxicity, the closest analogy is lead. **However, metallic lead has considerably higher toxicity than metallic uranium.** Compounds of lead are much more hazardous than compounds of uranium since uranium tends to form relatively insoluble compounds which are not readily absorbed into the body. Also, **lead within the body affects the nervous system and several biochemical processes, while the uranyl ion does not readily interfere with any major biochemical process** except for depositing in the tubules of kidney where damage occurs if excess deposition occurs. Glomeruli damage has been reported at high doses as well. The kidney damage is dosage dependent and somewhat reversible. Lead bullets are probably more dangerous than uranium bullets.”

The real deal, get down truth on DU ? Probably kept filed under state secrets and we’ll never get the full story until our grandchildren are old…🆒
