So, I was wondering more specifically, how much does a guy’s taste in music generally affect his chances with a woman. For example, I myself like and am open to just about anything. Sinatra, jazz, classic rock, pop, country (to an extent 😛), you name it.
However, my favorite is in the vein of Celtic folk/rock/punk., and I’ve always wanted to be in a band of that genre. The thing is, does that come across to women as juvenile and brutish? I’m hoping not, as the Dropkick Murphys, probably the most prominant name in Cletic rock/punk at the moment, released an album this month that debuted at #6 on the Billboard 200, so it owuld seem it’s more accepted than it was 5 years ago.
Anyway, do you think that a passion I have is going to turn women off?

Glad this came up.

Recently everything about me when playing music has improved.

I play drums and guitar. I’m going to start keyboard properly soon.

I’ve a really good feeling about playing now. I’m a much more synchronised drummer. I’ve got some real power and looseness into my groove.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot recently and it all clicks now.

The way I see it, Guitar, especially electric is made up of barre chords being picked and strummed. Lead work can be similar, especially rhythm solos in a way but there is more picking of individual notes with lead. All this involves is barring some strings and picking in or two strings most of the time. It’s simple when you break it down and it all makes sense now. There was a time when I listened to music and I thought, that is too intense and technical to play. Know it all clicks with me.

Similar logic for keyboard/piano. It’s just made up of chord progressions with notes added in. Sometimes two chords are played with the left and right hand together. So you play the chords and add in the relevant notes at the same time.

Even the singing has improved in me. Before my voice would crack up or get too thin. I thought it was limited. Now my range has improved so much it’s almost a miracle. 🙂

The new fitness regime has really helped me in this area I think.

I have a really good feeling about the future in this regard. I’ve always desired to be a musician and it might now happen in the future. I’ve never believed so much in my music now. Exciting times are ahead.

Sorry if I got really technical and into it there. I just really like talking about this kind of thing. 😃

By the way for the ladies, you can’t go wrong with Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, Barry White, all the classic, great singers. 😃

I have this theory that no music actually sucks - unless there is a serious skill issue. Pop music, rap, rock, heavy metal, etc - its all good if it has been produced professionally. The rest is a matter of taste.

Learn to appreciate MUSIC - not a band - not a genre - etc. And don’t shut your mind off at the prospects of listening to other genres. You’ll be missing out on beautiful intelligent girls that you may have earlier blown off because they asked you about Kanye’s new album. Or in the reverse, they may go “oh he likes Celtic music” and follow through on some serious stereotypes.

You’ll surprise yourself if you just let yourself relax and listen.

Women find musicians very sexy. As long as there’s true passion in it, followed by skill…

Don’t know why, but it is a very well known fact. Playing an instrument in general, and playing it well in particular, attracts women. Maybe it’s the combination of manual skills, sensitivity, connecting intelectual, emotional and physical processes inside you (all that is necessary to create music).

The genre doesn’t matter as long as you’re authentic in what you do.

It’s not so much the music itself as it is the angle from which she learns about your musical taste. Fashion and personality wise I’ve always been more attracted to the types of women that enjoy R&B, Techno, Dance Pop etc. Yet I personally don’t care too much for those styles of music. As a teen and early 20’s my attitude was if you din’t like metal you liked shit music. Now with 40 around the corner I still like aggressive rock genre’s like punk and metal but I’m also knowledgeable in Classical, Jazz, Opera, Blues and Classic Rock and you know what, I attract women almost half my age that have never listened to some of those genre’s all the time. The way I present my musical tastes it comes off as being sophisticated and worldly and girls that normally would be listening to Bass thumping dance music have gone to quaint jazz clubs or even Philharmonic events with me and swooned. I LOVE music itself and that comes across. So they love being part of experiencing it with me.

Very true and I’d wager particular instruments over others. I read in a newspaper once, women aren’t as attracted to drums cos’ of the deafening noise. 😛

But piano and guitar I reckon are perceived as more thoughtful and elegant. The same could apply to sax, horns, flute, violin, I could go on.

And I think charisma and passion on stage is very important and very attractive.

Well, I think part of it is the difference between a melody instrument and a rhythm instrument. You can play a song with just a guitar, likewise with a piano, drums?, not quite. Also there’s an image associated with certain instruments. How many times have we seen a movie or tv show where the male lead sits at a piano in the middle of a black tie dinner party and just starts playing some classical piece? Guitar and Sax have the advantage of being reasonably portable so you can take them anywhere and just belt out a tune at the drop of a hat. You can’t exactly carry drums with you, and you rarely see a home with a drum set in the living room to add a touch of class and sophistication as you would a piano.

That said, thanks to guys like Keith Moon and John Bonham drummers have the stereotype of being the craziest, craziest most gonzo guys in the band. You have the charismatic front man,(Robert Plant, Mick Jagger, David Lee Roth, Steven Tyler) the flashy guitar hero,(Eddie Van Halen, Yngwie Malmsteen) the mysterious quite bassist (Bill Wyman, John Paul Jones, Rudy Sarzo, Nikki Sixx) and the gonzo drummer on a mix of steroids and crack. The afore mentioned Bonham and Moon as well as Tommy Lee, Dave Lombardo and others.

Well, Charlie Watts must be an exception to this stereotype 🙂

Singers and guitards sure are flashy and visible, but it’s not them that makes girls sway their hips 😉 Nothing like a nice low-frequency groove. My personal theory is, woman’s uterus works like a microphone’s membrane. It’s sensitive to sounds, particularly low-range. And of course it likes steady rhythms. Some kahunas I’ve met few years ago claim that the uterus actually is an organ responsible for female intuition, receiving some otherwise imperceptible informations. But that’s another story.

I’ve had this little thing that usually I did when I was younger, pretty much every time when I had a girl coming over to my place for the first time for longer than few minutes. I would sit her on my amplifier and play her a mellow yet groovy and rhythmic tune on my fretless bass while she watched my fingers, listened to the melody and _felt_ the groove 🙂

I think people love the thump of drums. Where would music be without it? Imagine a club or disco without the 4/4 rhythm, which is present in the vast majority of electronic music.

Isn’t drums the only instrument without melodic notes? The great thing about any other instrument is that music can be written on anything and because they share chords, keys, and scales. You don’t have to learn how to play that instrument. Just the chord progression and notes and the rhythm and tempo.

I wouldn’t touch steroids personally. Bad, bad stuff.

I hope you’re joking. I was quite proficient in playing guitar and drums before I took up bass. And it wasn’t any easier. There’s no such thing as an easy instrument. There are easy things to play for every instrument. If you find an instrument easy, it only means you don’t appreciate its potential. You won’t become great in anything if you don’t stretch your abilities.

There was a time when people thought that bass is an easy instrument that only goes _boom boom, thump thump_. But then, Paul Chambers came up, then Scott LaFaro, then Paul McCartney, James Jamerson, John Paul Jones, Donald ‘Duck’ Dunn, Larry Graham, Jaco Pastorius, John Entwistle, Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, Geddy Lee, Flea, John Patitucci, Cliff Burton, Flea, Stuart Zender, Justin Chancellor… I could go on and on.

That’s the thing - exceed the expectations. Don’t be like _‘ok, I’m gonna learn that, because it’s easy’_. Put all the passion in it and become good. Really good. That’s what women like. And that’s what feels good for yourself, regardless of women liking it or not.

Have life. Do your thing, and do it really well. Do it for yourself and love it. Don’t think about learning an instrument to get pussy, because one day that pussy will tell you _“you have to choose, it’s either your fucking guitar or me”_. I know guys who started playing to get girls. They’re not good musicians, and they don’t have many girls around them either.
