Michael, I wish you the best of luck finding the fragrances with the qualities you are looking for because it is a monumental task. If you release them to be tested, I’m looking forward to testing them, though! 🙂

I can tell you this walk into SAKS or Bergdorfs and you will find about hundreds of high end perfumes and there is a reason, because everyone smell is different, and everyone skin chemistry is different

If everyone loved the same exact thing, there would only be a few perfumes out there and it would be a boring place and everyone would smell the same

IF the scent of mx140 is akuto I have to agree completely. THAT is the most repulsive scent I think I’ve smelt EVER. Absolutely NOTHING redeeming about it.

I can also tell you - if my assumption is correct - that akuto is NO WHERE NEAR amber or ambergris. Someone’s trippin that ish is from a different planet.

You are also so VERY right with your last comment. This would be a process for sure.

Scent ideas -

Bring back the original Ammo scent, or something close to it. It smelled like Cool Water/Nautica, make something similar.

Something manly such as D&G “The One”…basically all I’m wearing right now, along with ammo and 314..rawks.

The MX140 I have is [Neroli](https://a314.com/product-category/scented/androtics-neroli/) scented. MX140 hasn’t done much for me (besides making me smell like an orange grove).

THIS is definitely NOT neroli.
I’ll take fruity over this anyday.

Didn’t even have a chance to test it out to see whats up.
It was a complete scrubber from the git go.

I made some cover fragrances for myself, to mis with pheros.
One is a fruity, girly, pink perfume of strawberry, grapefruit, vanilla and blue musk. (Light musk would work too.)
Another is a darker scent of amber, benzoin and honey.
The sweetness covers the scent of cops and they go well with a variety of perfumes.

One male perfume that turns me on smells like leather, cognac and pipe tobacco. Very warm and manly. I also like incensey blends on men.

Thanks. I have Le Male, but haven’t smelled Black Code in awhile. I’ve smelled Black, not not the “XS” version. I’ll get samples of these.

I love real guiac wood and tonka bean. I’ve never smelled anything like the real thing in any cologne. I don’t think perfumers really have these pegged.

Some of these terms like “Ebony wood” are probably made up by marketing departments.

Cinnamon is very attractive in colognes, probably due to exclusivity to some extent. It’s not easy to incorporate in a way that doesn’t create a rash type situation, although the highly skilled do it (it appears mainstage in both Clive Christian _X_, one of the world’s most expensive colognes, and SmellThis’ _Pheros_, one of the world’s best and perhaps most underpriced natural colognes)

I think Dr. Hirsch also studied the attractiveness of cinnamon.

The type of mint in Le Male and Le Male summer smells like the fanciest chewing gum in the world to me, even a bit higher end smelling than most “real mint” oils. The perfumer for Gaultier seems to have gotten something closer to a real mint patch, the smell of actual mint sprigs, something of which seems to be lost when the oils are extracted.

This type of note is really something that I thought would make a fantastic pheromone malodor mask, a great alternative to a citrus mask. So far examples perfumers have sent to me of mint based colognes have been disappointing. Crude translations of the real thing, perhaps too “by the book”

I’ve gone ahead and ordered all of the chemicals I myself to need to make a mint accord.

While I’ll probably fail at doing this to a degree I’d be happy with, I’ll have a better “grammar” in which to talk to perfumers. My best work is often as an educated catalyst, working with real experts who can better execute my (sometimes well formed) “sketches”. Maybe, to some extent, it’s that certain experts perform their work far better if they try to “show up” the work of an amateur. 🙂

Exactly this bubble gum smell drives me mad about this product. It
blends quite well with the pheromones i use.
So you are another La Male fan? 🙂
I have tried many other cologne that pretend to be sweet like La Male.
And for now the closes matches are Black XS and armani code.

As you can see they have almost the same notes.

I wish you all the best luck in creating that real mint scent 😉
in combination with Cinnamon, tonka bean and a little bit of Sandalwood or Vanilla as a base note…

btw La Male is alomost gone in my country.. ☹ only the newest fragrances are available in the shops. ☹
So if you have a breakthrough on the mint i would be happy to get any fragrance that has it as a note 😉

> I do love the Creed colognes and have been seduced by their marketing which I’m sure you have seen. You know Oliver Creed only travels the world hand picking the finest ingredients like Vetiver from Hati and uses the old infusion techniques that have been abandoned as to costly by everyone else.Lol

Ah, I understand what you mean.

That would be nice, I agree.

Yet as an EU company, Creed themselves must follow IFRA regulations _by law_, yes, not voluntarily as the frag industry does in the US?

That means Creed might not be all that Creed like shortly. Most naturals are being phased our by regulation.

I understand that operations like Mandy Aftel runs in the bay area of California are simply not legal in the EU.

That’s something we need to consider, too. Due to saner product liability laws, we’ve considered moving our consumer projects to Europe (likely the Emerald Isle, which seems to be a favorite amongst the tech sector). You know, as in physically moving manufacturing there, not just as something on paper. That would mean what is now voluntary compliance for us would be mandatory. There always seems to be a downside to every upside.

> [@](#):
>
> I know what you mean about all the restrictions like oakmoss that has been banned. Gurlains Vetiver has been reformulated for example without the oakmoss which a lot of people on basenotes prefer the original.
>
> Have you thought about a unisex fragrance that seems to be the staple with a lot of scents these days. Could be a way of reducing the cost than producing scents for both men and women.

Well, most perfumers insist that fragrances really are “unisex”, and the sexuality of a fragrance is more about marketing.

I agree to an extent, but I just heard a child in the flower department of the grocery store the other day take a big whiff of flowers and say “smells like girls”.

Maybe it’s a scent memory, maybe he was just more in tune with reality, not being old enough to be fully programmed by society yet. I don’t know.

Women do seem to wear anything that smells good, for any sex. They’re very liberal. Most gay men seem very liberal scent-wise, too.

It seems to be heterosexual men care the most about a scent’s “sexuality” being clearly marked. I know I used to care more about fragrance’s “sex”, before understanding that most frag compounds are basically unisex.

It is almost ironic to me how perhaps one of the gayest appearing colognes of all time, Le Male by Gaultier (an unusually statue-esque man in a playfully colored sailor outfit!), was also one of the most popular among heterosexual men.

Obviously the phrase “for men” has a lot of sway. I remember when it was first launched. Heterosexual men assumed it was a “gay product” with it’s design, until the people behind the fragrance counter explained otherwise. Now it’s not even questioned.

> [@](#):
>
> I am a recent avid collector of colognes and believe most scents have their own charms except Angel by Mugler lol.

_Except_ Angel, wow!

That’s such a polar one. Most agree that it’s unique, however, even if they don’t like it.

> [@](#):
>
> I would love like others I’m sure to test the colognes that you are having produced.
>
> Anyway all the best in your endeavors and I’m sure that focusing on quality is going to be music to many peoples ears.🙂

You almost have to _trick_ perfumers into thinking this way, since the market has _trained_ them to think the opposite. I have to do an excess amount of convincing to have them send me anything expensive enough to smell halfway decent.

Let’s do the math for a second. Most newer department store colognes cost $30 to $50 a pound raw, which is very little. The fancy bottles truly do cost more than what goes inside. (and you can verify all of this by reading Chandler Burr, Luca Turin, etc. – they speak just as candidly as me). This is the opposite way I think. I’d rather use a stock bottle and “put more money in the bottle”, as they say.

These core fragrance companies that do all the actual perfuming work make money in volume, making you buy extremely high quantities to even get “in the game”. To work with some of these core producers, you need to buy a almost a tanker of some of these fragrances, and that’s _a lot_. Unless you are actually selling to department stores, or have other high volume channels, it can be very difficult to work with them as minimum orders are so darn high.

Anyway, if you take a look at what truly fine musks costs… well, a few are around a $1000 kilo… A truly beautiful synthetic deer musk molecules runs about $2500 a kilo.

Translated to cost per pound, that’s what… $2200 per pound for a good musk, and $5500 per pound for one of the world’s finest musks?

That’s still nothing compared to some [pheromone molecules](https://pheromonelabs.com/), which can cost more than either one _per gram_, for goodness sake. Compared to our pheromone costs, the frag costs are like dust (except for minimum order requirements and cold storage). But, for the sake of staying within context, let’s just keep the conversation exclusively within the frag industry for a moment. Let’s run the cost of these musks against the charges for finished fragrance “juice”.

Now, even though you use very little of these musks… If you do the math, you can’t say that an average department store cologne uses much or any of these.

Galaxolide, which almost every new release reeks of, is something like $20 per kilo. Even less if you order enough. That’s what, $9 a pound and less?

If you do the math, you can clearly that what you suspect you smell at the department store or Sephora, is pretty much exactly what you think could fit in there based on budget.

You might as well put Tide (full of Galaxolide) in a little spritzer bottle, put Coppertone on your pulse points (one of the best rated common scents), and roll around the in the park (the smell of nature).

OK – sure – while the “artistry” of perfumers goes beyond that, I would like to see some of the better fragrance molecules used. The palette most perfumers restrict themselves to is far too limiting.

It’s like a painter not using a cobalt blue he really wants, because it’d make his paintings too expensive for an art collector to buy. It doesn’t make a heck of a lot of sense to me when you’re dealing with product made for anything but department stores.

Ultimately, I think I may have to formulate at least the musk portion of our fragrances myself (or with a little help from an independent specialist or two). At this point, I’m not sure the perfumers are even _allowed_ by their corporate masters to touch the more expensive molecules. They certainly know how to formulate some wonderful top and heart, but the base notes really seem to be lacking.

Yeah, I agree with Xev. One of the best covers for cops is vanilla.
Pink sugar I quite like, but it’s very sweet, quite overwhelming so not everyones cup of tea.

My own favourite perfumes that are vanilla scents include “L” by Lolita Lempicka (which has a bit of cinnamon & immortelle florals in it too), and Vivienne Westwood’s “Boudoir”

I think anything that’s vanilla would be great, but also scents with richer notes like amber, musk and brown sugar 🙂

Oh, and I can’t speak for the rest of the ladies here on the forum, but I’m a complete violet & vanilla ho 😃

I’ve found that the girls like them better as well- a scent that women like because they can relate to it- but manly enough for them to know it belongs on a man and not herself. Neroli is quite nice in this aspect. A scent in the same family would be very exciting.

I have to agree here. Mco is right. I get compliments often when wearing mones that are scented, but my most commonly complimented scent was from Mx292, which was a very clean scent that has a bit of a fruity or tropical note to it. Not strawberry fruity, but something that smelled great and didn’t scream “womens perfume.”

My point is that even for men, a lighter more “bisexual” scent would probably be acceptable, even popular.

Personally I really like Storer’s Kadota product. If you can come up with something dry and grassy and woodshoppish like that, I would be a happy camper.

The problem I have with fragrancing (as opposed to diffusion enhancing like is done with the light neroli) is that it limits the amount of sprays I can use. AMMO is good stuff and I like to wear a lot of it! Thank goodness for the neroli option. 🙂

Thanks for all the feedback guys! It helps tremendously.

One little thing. This seems to have become a male dominated thread, while I was hoping for more feedback from the ladies. (I feel that it is the women or those who like what are thought as “feminine” scents, who are most undeserved here)

I still have some daytime responsibilities I have to finish, but unless I see more suggestions from about what they want, I think I’m going to attempt to split this thread in two later on tonight.

To properly develop products for women, I really need the type of feedback my inexcusably masculine brain (with it’s underdeveloped corpus callosum and perhaps overemphasis on logic and simplistic solutions), can handle. I’m not as good as “just knowing” as women. I’m intuitive about some things, but not about the same things most women are. I need to be told certain things that many women find to be glaringly obvious and self-evident. I’m sorry about that, but I’ll do my best to work around my disabilities if you work with me.

I seek/need/want, what does everyone call this again? Constructive criticism. (I’m not being smarmy, I stupidly forgot! Alzeimhers or somethin’, heh)

i.e., don’t try necessarily be my friend or fan when giving feedback. I like honesty, and grow from honesty. If you want to be my friend or fan, just be honest with me. 🙂

Likewise, I don’t need excessive negativity. That’s not truly honest, either, as it discounts my intent (which is positive) and what I’ve worked at my entire life.

Trust me, if you think I ever mean anything less than the best, then you’re certainly assuming I’m someone I’m not. In person, my friends understand me pretty well. I grew up with mostly women friends, in fact, which may be why I don’t see them as sex objects to the degree as some men do.

The problem is sometimes things can be misread online. Just be sure to read positive intent my messages, since it’s certainly there in my heart. We all tend to voice things we read in a voice other than the authors. That’s why I’ve always recommended on this forum that we read things in the most upbeat, happy voice possible, and to assume only the best in others.

Forum rage and road rage have the same dynamics; it’s because we don’t actively remember there’s a person at the other end of the “machine”. The proper presuppositions and voicing help us to get along in the “online” world.

Ok… All that said, here’s what I want, so I can give you more of what you want:

Simply tell me what you don’t like, why you don’t like it, and then suggestions given with good intent on what gets your motors whirring. What, in an ideal world, you could have. And then, what in this world given what you’ve experienced before, you think is do-able as a practical _next step_.

As a small company, ultimately we need the advice tempered with what gets _a lot_ of people’s motors whirring. We can’t be too _nichey_ at this point, which is why things like vanilla and chocolate work well (the two new women’s frags are vanilla, in fact). Nonetheless, I do want to hear fantasy / “perfect world” solutions. While we’re not always able to provide them instantly, it gives us a goal to work for long-term.

Thank you!

I’m not sure what chocolatini smells like, but a nice chocolate scent with cocoa and some vanilla would smell yummy on a girl. Just as long as the chocolate is not too strong, everything just right as far as scent strength goes.

On another note, if you could turn the smell of clove cigs into some type of cologne blended with some other stuff that would be cool. I know it may sound weird, but I love the smell of cloves.

I would buy a cologne that smelled like cloves. Not sure if the girls would like it, but I would. Very good suggestion.

BTW clove cigarettes will be illegal soon, the bill has been passed.
