I found this very interesting article on Fructose and health…

I just attended a series of presentations/lectures in FLA the end of Jun
One of the researchers was a Dr Ann DeWees-Allen
It was, en toto, fascinating, and absolutely amazing, but one of the things she mentioned in passing was that one of the **MOST FATTENING** substances available to mankind right now is : **diet soda**. What blew _me_ away was the sidenote:
“You don’t even have to SWALLOW this stuff-just swish a diet soda around in your mouth, _spit it out_, and it will make you fatter than a pig!”😮 😮 😮

\*(she has a rather impressive scientific “pedigree” and a personal story definitely worth reading-I’ll post the link in a sec)

Can you explain that one??😕

in fact diet drinks dont make you fatter, apart from having next to nothing in calories, the artificial sweetners used in most diet products also supress the appetite, bodybuilders often drink diet coke and other diet drinks when nearing a competition just for the appetite supressing charachteristics of the drink

like mjim said, can you explain that one? because its kind of hard to believe

Hi!

I’m sorry, had a lot of distractions the last while or so!:o 🙂
The comment she made was in a general presentation Jun 30th.
Another item she claimed was fattening was : rice cakes! 😮
It didn’t make sense,😕
and I’ve had no time to **“trust, but verify”** yet- but I think it had to do with
the glycemic index and the bodies’ response …
Here are some of her links:

Here’s her story of survival (which was the initial- or the strongest- impetus for her research)
[Dr. Ann de Wees Allen](http://www.anndeweesallen.com/SurvivalStory.htm)

She and her team have come up with real answers for athletes, diabetics, and sickle cell anemia–and I enjoyed meeting her immensely.
SO, I’m willing to give her TBOTD (the benefit of the doubt) till I find out why what she said (which doesn’t make any sense on first glance)
is or isn’t valid.

If it has fructose in it, it will make you fatter like the first article explains.
Fructose goes to your liver like alcohol does, only without the buzz…😃

True
It’s just that phrase :“equivilant to six bowls of sugar” that gets me 😮 -which is decidedly counterproductive to the goals of most people drinking diet soda!!

I happen to like Diet Dr Pepper b/c its not as _sweet_ as regular-I just always thought it was a better taste

Locally I’m not seeing fructose as an ingredient in diet drinks.. aspartame is listed yes of course.. is it that they don’t use fructose here or they just don’t list it I wonder?

I’m not sure _which_ ingredient is the culprit precisely- or what exactly produces the cephalic response- but whatever it is, it freaks me out that you don’t even have to swallow it to get the effects!😮

I heard some story about the artificial sweeteners fool the body into thinking it’s supposed to be calorie laden sugar and that throws the system into a tizzy when it turns out not to be so. Odd statement too…

Fructose is the sugar in fruits/veggies, which is why great athletes eat fruits before events. .

I found this:

".. **on CBS News, Katie Couric, broke the story that diet sodas are _fattening_ and can increase risk of Metabolic Syndrome and heart disease. This was startling news to the public, and baffling to scientists.**

**Susan Feely, President of the American Beverage Association, stated “How can something with zero calories that’s 99% water with a little flavoring in it . . cause weight gain?”😮**

**CBS quoted studies that show people who _drink more than one soft drink a day had a 48 percent increased prevalence of metabolic syndrome_.**

**DIET SODA CAUSES WEIGHT GAIN**
\*\*New studies involving over 1,500 subjects have shown that people who drink diet soft drinks don’t lose weight - in fact, they **gain weight**. Researchers stated “What was surprising was when we looked at people only drinking diet soft drinks, their risk of obesity was even higher.”

In fact, when the researchers took a closer look at their data, they found that nearly all the obesity risk from soft drinks came from diet sodas. There was a 41 percent increase in risk of being overweight for every can or bottle of diet soft drink a person consumes each day.

For diet soft-drink drinkers, the risk of becoming overweight or obese was: \*\*

- **36.5 percent for up to 1/2 can each day**
- **37.5 percent for 1/2 to one can each day**
- **54.5 percent for 1 to 2 cans each day**
- **57.1 percent for more than 2 cans each day.**
**For each can of diet soft drink consumed each day, a person’s risk of obesity went up 41 percent.**

**WHY?**
_ **Cephalic Response: Key Code to Obesity** _
**The real issue for the soda researchers, which was addressed by Katie Couric on CBS news, was why diet sodas cause weight gain. It may be a mystery to most researchers, but the SKINNY SCIENCE research team already has the answer.**

\*\*Clinical researchers at **Glycemic Research Laboratories** (GRL) know exactly why and how diet sodas cause weight gain. It’s caused by the Cephalic Response, and the GRL SKINNY SCIENCE team has been studying the effects on humans for the past 20 years. \*\*
**They, in fact, received the first patent awarded worldwide for this research.**

**With combined expertise of 90 years, the SKINNY SCIENCE team has delved into the biochemistry that causes the Cephalic Response, including the glycemic index and glycemic response of foods.**

**The CV’s of the SKINNY SCIENCE researchers reads like a _Who’s Who_, and actually includes a scientist that is listed in the _Who’s Who of American Inventors_, the top genetic researcher in the world from NIH, and a renowned MD, PhD in Cardiovascular Pharmacology, who just won a Lifetime Achievement Award…"**
