In my lack of proper sanitation for my kitchen I left a dirty plastic cutting board on my counter top for a few days after filleting some previously cleaned bluegill. I neglected to notice that water and most likely fish juice had seeped under the board and quickly grew a brown bacteria culture between the surfaces of my cutting board and laminated particle board counter top.

When I picked it up yesterday I almost threw up. Since then I’ve tried to clean the surface with dishsoap containing bleach alternative, white vinegar, baking soda, Murphy’s Oil Soap, and 3m industrial glass cleaner concentrate which my dad got from the factory he works in. I even left the cleaners on the counter top to soak in, and the dish soap overnight.

Needless to say, you can still smell the pungent sour smell from about 3-5 feet away.

I need to try bleach, but I have a feeling this will fail as well.

Any ideas? Biological deodorizers? Cleaning methods?

I’m renting this place, I have to make it not stink somehow.

Try spraying lots of Febreeze and the leave an open box of baking soda in the general vicinity. Failing that, try smoking a nice cuban cigar in the area and repeat the process.

I did febreeze the counter last night. I forgot that. It didn’t work.

An old fashioned remedy for fish or onion odors on your hands is to rub them on the inside of a squeezed-out lemon rind. You could try that or one of those orange citrus cleaners or Goo-Gone.

I would try washing the counter with a 1:10 solution of bleach and water, (1 part bleach 10 parts water, or a splash on a sponge or cloth you don’t care about being bleach eaten. (This also works great for repelling houseflies, but the mix doesn’t have to be that strong)
(cleaning my bird supplies I do this to kill any grunges left behind)

Lemon oil or other citrus fruits will clean most smells.

Depending on the plastic, the smell could be there for a long, long time time. You might try lemon juice or alcohol followed by Febreeze

I had mold in a fridge one time growing from a spill and I used Scrubbing Bubbles. It actually worked very well and the odor eventually disappeared on its own.

I’d say sprinkle baking soda over the affected area and leave overnight. Wipe clean and then air for a while.

Definitely sounds icky so good luck with that!
