# one in a billion voice

This is Radu Marian, born in 1977 in the former Soviet Republic of Moldavia. He began singing Mozart at the age of seven and was trained in voice and music in Moscow and Bucharest. He failed to go through puberty and his voice never went through the normal transformation, so he is a natural full voice male Soprano. He is one of the very few men who is as close to equivalent to a castrato as we will ever hear in modern times.

I’m sorry about the sound quality of the first selection, but I wanted to choose a video that actually shows him singing.

The other pieces are much better. The second is a very beautiful and sweet piece and the third is a Mozart piece that shows some of the embellishments of voice that were written for castratti. The fourth piece is Radu Marian singing as a treble, recorded when he was 7 years old. The last is Aria (Cantabile) de “Sul margine adorato” composed by Antonio Maria Bononcini sometime between 1721 -1726.

And for those of you who think this guy sounds like a woman, please do take the time to really listen and compare his voice with those of female sopranos. What you will hear in Radu Marian’s voice is a clarity of note that you can’t find in a female soprano. Female voices generally have a quality called vibrato that gives a completely different quality to the sound than that found in a male soprano.
