Am I the only one always over-analyzing reading body language? Conscious of my own as well as the language of others?

Post in here for analysis!

* * *

I’ll start - my friend and I were standing side by side today talking. I see one of our instructors not too far away. He paces around outside his room, making eye contact with me. As he is slowly making his way over, my friend reminded me of a question I needed to ask him regarding a paper. She calls him over and we form a triangle.

He faces me, holding eye contact uncomfortably long as he explains the concept - which, because of this eye contact, i can’t focus on - before he glances at my cleavage. His composure changes: hands in pockets, thumbs out forming a triangle. All the while more uncomfortable eye contact. He interrupts himself, turning his head to yell angrily at someone before returning to the conversation.

Have at it. 😛

When you first begin to learn body language I think we all obsess a little or over analyze it. Its natural because your bringing something that we do on a subconscious level to consciousness. Once you get good at it though it just comes natural like language. You probably dont remember but you obsessed about learning to say daddy and mommy when you were little to. Now while you think about them you dont think so much about saying the words.

While your description was good its hard to nail totally with just words without seeing it happen. You could have left out certain tell tale facial expressions and head tilts. Even the position of his shoulder in conjunction with you and your friend makes a difference. I will translate the basics though.

> [@](#):
>
> He paces around outside his room, making eye contact with me.

He is unsure of something. It doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with you even though he made eye contact.

> [@](#):
>
> She calls him over and we form a triangle.

Normal form for sharing so if he is actively in the triangle he is open to listening and sharing.

> [@](#):
>
> He faces me, holding eye contact uncomfortably long as he explains the concept - which, because of this eye contact, i can’t focus on - before he glances at my cleavage.

He feels confident about the subject and is interested in your understanding of this concept Glancing at your cleavage can mean two things depending on the context its done in. In some cases its done to display dominance. A way to subtly remind you he is Alpha and your a women in his domain. In some cases its sexual interest but there are other signs along with it.

> [@](#):
>
> His composure changes: hands in pockets, thumbs out forming a triangle.

Again he is bringing your attention to his crotch area in a subconscious attempt to make you see him not only as your professor but a virile male.

> [@](#):
>

Just restating “I am alpha in this domain”

> [@](#):
>
> All the while more uncomfortable eye contact.

He seems comfortable with the eye contact. I am assuming its you that is uncomfortable with it because on a subconscious level you know what his body language was saying. I do feel his prolonged eye contact while discussing this subject, coupled with his body language says he finds you interesting both intellectually and as a women.

Now if he starts in with some kino he has sexual interest as well. 😉

Sometimes, when a lady reveals her cleavage, even when I have no interest or desire to be with her, my eyes tend to go down there, lol…
Oh well… whatever… I guess i am a perv and like seeing breasts (as well as p\*\*\*y ) 😛

Yep that means your just a horndog and your not getting any.

LOL 😛 just teasing… (((Coolkat)))

Like I mentioned there are other cues that indicate sexual interest along with glancing at cleavage it depends on the context its done in. You may not have desire for the person just yet but looking at her cleavage is like shopping, your checking out the goods before you buy them. Women do it to, not your cleavage but your form.

In your situation your browsing the store, so to speak. You see a lot of nice goods but none that make you want to buy just yet.

In labellavita situation he was showing other indicators. Eye contact, Body squared off to face her, thumbs in pockets (invitation to check out his goods).

Tisha,

Is this just your natural abilities? I know I’ve read somewhere women are more perceptive. Did you also hone your skills?

Was it through training? Books?

Curious cause I’m pretty good at gauging people especially with the line of work I’m in. I was wondering if you could point me in the direction where I can further refine my skills.

Thank you much!

Both…

We did cover Body language briefly when I got my coaching certificate from Omega. They covered it in NLP as well.

I think for me its partly my clarity but I did read a lot fo books on it because it interested me.

The **definitive book of body language** is a must have.

I also like **What every body is saying**

**Walking your talk** is a good read.

**Emotions revealed**

I read a lot LOL

I know they had books for body language in business when I was at borders. I didnt read those.

Those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Actually she said his hands were in his pockets with thumbs out. Maybe she meant the other way, but if she didn’t then he could possibly confident in himself and his knowledge, but not necessarily about his thoughts or the situation.

The other question is if he was holding eye contact only while listening or while talking or both. Holding eye contact while talking can be another sign of “alpha” dominance.

**definitive book of body language** is a good book. I haven’t read the others.
**The Yes Factor** is a great book for all nonverbal communication.

“Forming a triangle.” If they were relaxed I would agree but the triangle says something else. Course like I said its hard to say for sure without actually having a visual.

I havent read the yes factor, I will have to pick that one up. Thanks

I’ve done this to friends, both male and female, and they do it to me. It’s an acknowledgment of eye contact between people who are friends or who are nodding acquaintances at the very least. It can occasionally be a flirtatious signal if a man does it to a woman or vice versa.

Just watch out if he winks at you, lol. I had a cougar do that to me when sitting across the table from me. She winked at me so many times, a slow, obvious wink. Flirting like mad.

Between friends it can be a greeting, an acknowledgement of your presence as Muskcloud said… Its generally reserved for those who we have a connection with. Sort of separates them from the rest of the people in the room.

My husband actually does this a lot. When I meet him somewhere as soon as my eyes meet his across the room, his brows flash up. “It says I see you and I know you see me” . In the context of a lecture, him signaling you out and flashing the brow is a indication of interest.

Often when people make gestures that can be interpreted as both friendly and lightly sexual/romantic it is a kind of recognition that you are both among the flirtatious people. That makes a man feel like a man and a woman feel like a woman, which is pleasant if both are at ease with their masculinity or femininity.

I’ve noticed that even people who often wink or flash refrain from doing so when a member of the opposite sex has a creepy or dull vibe. I guess it is a way to quickly separate those fit for courtship from the unhealthy ones. People may also temporarily be in the latter group because of illness or feeling down and make dull bodylanguage.

It can be the start of flirting; if both are unmarried, attracted and nothing bars them from courtship, the light gestures are often combined and more intense ones are added.

The eyberow flash. I have read abotu this before, but I can’t remember what it said. I am known for the eyebrow flash. I use it often to signal to people that I’m ok to approach. I normally use it on women that seem like they want to talk but are intimidated. I don’t view it as flirting, however I can see how it would lead to that.

My wife and I also use it to signal when we are about to share a telepathic message. lol. Usually it’s when we share an inside joke. I beleive that it is used to establish rapport. If someone flashes their eyebrows and you flash back, then it’s a good start for mirroring and leading.

I gotta laugh because I was in the living room this morning talking to my husband about something and he was telling me something he just learned and his eyebrows flashed. I did a little mental process asking myself what was he saying to me with that facial expression pertaining to his verbal communication.

It was “how about that ?” Almost like he was trying to impress me with what he knew. Still connecting but with a sort of “wow can you believe it” look.

This could pertain to your professor and his lecture. Sort of like “am I impressing you with my knowledge” type of flash. Again singling you out for the brow flash creates a connection. I am sure he not flashing everyone from his podium he would look ridiculous LOL

This might sound a wee bit off, but it’s something that I do that really, really helps me understand body language. I watch video’s as in music video’s and go frame by frame to what the person is singing about. Now you might think actual movies would be better, but here’s why I believe the music video is more adapt for this. Its short! They have three minutes to present the entire context of the song, which if you’re like me, can go pretty deep. I’m always figuring out subtext and deciphering what they really meant. Usually when they record a video though, you can get an idea what the person is conveying in song/words by their appearance on screen.

Here is a great example: [YouTube - Sara Bareilles - King Of Anything](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eR7-AUmiNcA&feature=autoplay&list=QL&index=8&playnext=4)

Sure I love the song, and who wouldn’t? Its a great song, but seriously watch Sara sing it. Every emotion she portrays is clearly defined in her facial expressions. Its one of the better video’s today that capture a good bit of body language.
