I’m a **massive gamer.** When I’m not working here, I’m either gaming or working in media covering gaming topics.

(This explains my intermittent absences and hiatuses… I juggle THREE jobs: one as a media producer, one as community manager here, and one as a longtime NLP practitioner & seminar assistant.)

When I played Deus Ex: Human Revolution some years ago, my mind was blown. #1 on how **right** some of it is! **DUB TEE EFF,** Eidos Montreal… someone on their writing team or one of their PAs or something SIMPLY MUST have been stalking our forums at some point in their research. Mary DeMarle, Annakin Slayd, James Swallow – I’m on to you!

Watching gameplay walkthroughs isn’t nearly as fun as actually playing the game – it’s like $9.99 in the Playstation/Xbox marketplaces now that it’s aged a bit and not current title – you should buy it and check it out! I’m going to post some of the highlights here for the population who don’t have the patience to play through a totally awesome game.

A really quick synopsis, to get you up to speed with the mythology of the game. You need context to grasp everything that’s at play here:

([Courtesy of Wikipedia,](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deus_Ex:_Human_Revolution) who can summarize this way better than I can)
**Setting**

_Deus Ex: Human Revolution_ is a [cyberpunk](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyberpunk)-inspired game and takes place during the year 2027, 25 years before _Deus Ex_. [Nanotechnological](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanotechnology) augmentations have yet to be developed, and [biomechanical](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biomechanics) augmentations are the current state of the art. The player’s character, Adam Jensen, is a private security officer with Sarif Industries, a leading biotech company that specializes in [human augmentations](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_enhancement). After an attack on his company leaves him horrifically injured and forced to undergo augmentation to survive, “the conspiracy begins.”[14] ([Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Wikipedia](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deus_Ex:_Human_Revolution#cite_note-pcz-2008preview-14)) The player travels to several locations over the course of the game: [Detroit](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit), Hengsha (a fictional city on [Hengsha Island](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hengsha_Island) in the [Yangtze River](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yangtze_River) near [Shanghai](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shanghai)), [Montreal](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montreal), [Singapore](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore), and Panchaea, a facility in the [Arctic Ocean](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arctic_Ocean).[9] ([Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Wikipedia](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deus_Ex:_Human_Revolution#cite_note-eg-e3trailer-interview-9))

**Themes**

_Deus Ex: Human Revolution_ deals with the ethics of [transhumanism](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transhumanism), and raises the question of whether humanity’s reach has exceeded its grasp. “Mankind is using mechanical augmentations,” director Jean-Francois Dugas said before the game’s release, “but there is still much to be determined in terms of their effect on society and the ultimate direction it will lead us in.”[9] ([Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Wikipedia](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deus_Ex:_Human_Revolution#cite_note-eg-e3trailer-interview-9)) The Greek myth of [Daedalus](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daedalus) and [Icarus](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icarus) appears in Adam Jensen’s dreams as an allegory to this thought, and also?given that both Daedalus and Icarus were the names of artificial intelligences in _Deus Ex_?an intellectual bridge to the original game. With correct provocation in the final location of _Human Revolution_, Hugh Darrow likens himself to Daedalus having seen his creation seemingly spiral out of control. The pace of technological development is reflected visually by a [Renaissance](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renaissance) theme. Characters supportive of the human augmentation movement dress themselves and decorate their homes in reinterpreted late-medieval Italian style, and the game as a whole has a [sepia](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sepia_%28color%29)-tinted colour palette reminiscent of [historic manuscripts](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Da_Vinci_Vitruve_Luc_Viatour.jpg). In contrast, characters who are opposed to or are of neutral persuasion toward the human enhancement movement wear clothing that is more reminiscent of contemporary fashions.[21] ([Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Wikipedia](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deus_Ex:_Human_Revolution#cite_note-renaissance-theme-gdc-21)) As was the case in _Deus Ex_, conspiracy theories and immensely powerful corporations feature strongly, using human augmentation as just one more method of manipulation.[9] ([Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Wikipedia](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deus_Ex:_Human_Revolution#cite_note-eg-e3trailer-interview-9))

**Where do [Pheromones](https://a314.com/) Come in to Play?**

_Remember above we were talking about human augmentations? One of the storylines you can play involves one where you get to manipulate and visualize PHEROMONAL INFLUENCE!_

Again, I hand the mic elsewhere, this time to [Deus Ex wikia](http://deusex.wikia.com/wiki/Social_Enhancer), who can summarize this way better than I can:
\*\*Social Enhancer [Augment]
\*\*

The **CASIE** ( **C** omputer **A** ssisted **S** ocial **I** nteraction **E** nhancer) is one of the many [augmentations](http://deusex.wikia.com/wiki/Augmentations_%28DX3%29) available in _[Deus Ex: Human Revolution](http://deusex.wikia.com/wiki/Deus_Ex:_Human_Revolution)_. It serves to make most conversations a bit easier, and adds a bit of replay value to the game thanks to its unique dialogue options.

Provides its user with a direct monitor of behavior patterns and likely responses from conversational subjects. In real terms, this means the user can gain an insight into which conversational methods to employ in any situation. You can permanently ruin important conversations by saying the wrong thing, this aug gives you some inkling of what to pick. It can be upgraded with a pheromone emitting system that allows additional conversation options.
Activation Cost: 2 [Praxis](http://deusex.wikia.com/wiki/Praxis) Points

**Emotional Intelligence Enhancer (Upgrade)**

- Upgrade Requirement: Social Enhancer Augmentation
- Upgrade Cost: N/A
- Use: Analyze and persuade people into following a certain course of action
- Activation: Contextual
- Energy Consumption: None

**In-Game[http://www.pheromonetalk.com/data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIABAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAEALAAAAAABAAEAQAICTAEAOw%3D%3D](http://deusex.wikia.com/wiki/Social_Enhancer?action=edit&section=2)**

This is a highly useful augmentation that makes the game’s various dialogue challenges significantly easier, though it is definitely not required, nor are any of the game’s dialogue challenges mandatory. However, there are certain conversations that are not dialogue challenges, but with the use of this augmentation, can still be turned to provide additional rewards for the player. It is worth noting that certain specific outcomes can ONLY be achieved through the use of this augmentation, but in no way is it at any point necessary to progress.

This augmentation works in three ways. Upon entering a dialogue challenge, the player will notice an improved HUD allowing for further options due to this augmentation.

The first addition is a persuasion level bar that will measure in real-time the efficacy of the player’s dialogue choices thus far. In every selection there will be one or two options that will further convince the target, and one option that will anger the target. As the player makes consecutively correct choices, the bar will rise and turn further green, wrong options will cause the bar to drop and turn red.

The second addition is a psychological profile menu that will list the target’s psychological traits and a description of the target’s personality. Though not of any direct assistance, this will help give the player an idea of which choices will be most effective on the target, though those choices will change based on the path the conversation takes.

The third addition is a menu that will allow the player to release pheromones to chemically influence the target. You will be able to determine the correct pheromone to release by carefully watching a Personality Type indicator as you talk with the subject. Three pheromone types are available, each targeting a different major personality type: alpha, beta, and omega. What type the target happens to be will be measured by three bars that light up when the target speaks - higher bars in any of the personality types indicate the target leans more towards that type, and so forth.

Note that within the Personality Type indicator the color of the bars doesn’t matter: alpha bars are always red, beta yellow, and omega green. Only the number of bars matters in determining the subject’s personality type. Also, it doesn’t matter how often a given personality type lights up: for example, if you see a low alpha reading (1 or 2 bars) several times, but a single omega reading with three bars, the subject is an omega.

The pheromone inducer will allow Jensen to force conversations that are not going his way, or else force conversations that are not dialogue challenges, unlocking additional rewards. However, selecting the wrong type will end the conversation. This can lead to gleaning more information from a person, or removing a step from a mission by forcing cooperation. It can even [save an otherwise doomed character’s life](http://deusex.wikia.com/wiki/Brent_Radford).

This is a passive augmentation and does not have an energy cost or need to be activated. Characters it can be used with, and the suggested pheromone to emit are listed below.

Here’s a few of the shorter scenes. Watch it in fullscreen and see all the various features of the HUD!

Maybe you can use a little NLP/Design Human Engineering to install this same Social Enhancer Augmentation toolbox into your OWN mind as you are going about PERSUADING people around _you_, eh?

This one’s really good:
