Hey, I’m just feeling the need to rant about something. . . I have a 12-year-old niece who is married into my family. I love and adore her to death, but I can never adequately express how sorry I feel for having my older sister as a stepmother. My older sister is the most intolerant person I know. She practically raised me while I was growing up, and it was honestly a living hell quite a bit of the time. My mom would like to buy her granddaughter gifts, but my sister makes it almost impossible for anyone to buy any gift for my niece. She won’t let her have anything. She won’t let her have smelly stuff, nothing with glitter, nothing that makes noise, no candy (though my niece is a little chubby, so I can understand that), as well as other things too numerous to count. About the only safe thing to buy my niece is clothes, and even 12-year-old girls get tired of getting clothes eventually. My sister is also a huge hypocrite. She threw a spa party at her house and I went cuz I hadn’t seen her in awhile and I wanted to visit her. I was wearing a red sweater that I looked incredible in. EVERYONE always has a compliment for me whenever I wear it. However, it is a form-fitting sweater, so it shows off the small of my back when I bend over. Because of this, I make sure that the only thing that shows is my back. That means no thongs sticking out, no butt crack, etc. Most people would think this acceptable, right? Not my sis. She chewed me out for being a bad influence on my niece. I turned around and looked at what she was wearing. She was wearing a V-necked top that showed off her cleveage. I pointed this out to her, and she got soooooo mad at me. She later called my mom to complain about it, leaving out the cleveage part. My sis also won’t let my niece read the fifth Harry Potter book. She’s afraid of my niece turning into a “teenager”. Hmmm. . . quite honestly I don’t think there is much she can do about that. She is practically one already. For those of you who don’t read Harry Potter, the fifth book pretty much contains a lot of swearing, and Harry is pretty much pissed throughout the whole book, but for a very good reason. I really hate the rule, because being with my sis and her husband, even with my niece is around, is pretty much like watching an R-rated movie. I’m not even joking. They like to talk about how their landlord once heard them while they were in bed, and every other word coming out of their mouths is the f-word. Honestly, my niece is better off reading the book than visiting them. Grrr. . . I learned some of this yesterday and I have been steamed about it since. I personally think someone needs to give my sis a swift kick up the @$$. She just needs to learn how to tolerate others instead of stifling them so they won’t disturb her in any way, shape or form. With all due respect, it sounds like your sister sounds like a total whack job. Seems like she could screw up your niece and have her end up as a drug addict, stripper or hooker.😮 ---

From what I hear about my niece’s real mother, my sister is a huge improvement. All my niece’s mother wants my niece for is to get money from my brother-in-law. Other than that, she won’t have anything to do with her. She also gotten into a lot of trouble for writing bad checks, and she is constantly making up excuses not to pick my niece up from school or for even visiting her. But yeah. . . about all I’m afraid of my niece turning out to be is being as sullen and uncaring about her family as my sis is. None of my other sisters get along with her, and my mother even complains from time to time about her. My sis is always making up excuses not to visit us, and we know she is not being completely truthful about being busy all the time cuz we would see her around town after she says she needs to leave to go home. She doesn’t really care about us, and that is what bothers most of us. We are so happy to see her when she comes to visit, but then she treats us like crap, so that hurts. ---

Perhaps the most reasonable solution would be to ignore your sister. Perhaps the attempting to get her to participate in the family is the feed back she is looking for. If you simply ignore her, she might come to realize what a pain she has been and come looking for you, and if not, no loss and the pain is out of your life.
