agreed they lay off their workers and then have to hire more instead of laying off the biggest payout people first.. then they get short staffed blah blah blah etc etc so on and so forth. and i agree if a woman does the same amount of work she should get paid equal.. its a no brainer..

The best argument that I am aware of against discrimination is somewhat tied to economics. Given a nation that chooses to discriminate against a group, that nation runs the risk that talented members of that group are not cultivated to reach thier highest potential and therefore are not as great of a benefit to a society. In this case, what amounts to discrimination of roughly 50% of the population greatly diminishes the number of talented individuals in the country. That nation also runs the risk that talented members of said discriminated group would attempt to emigrate somewhere where they would not be subject to the same level of discrimination.

It seems that the rationalization posed for discrimination in this case is time taken off due to pregnancy. Doesn’t the benefit of talented people siring healthy offspring outweigh the downside of a couple of extra weeks of paid vacation?

In the grand-scheme of things, yes. Most definitely and absolutely.

But as a company, having a child introduced to a mother is a source of possibly higher stress and potentially more time off in the future - or possibly even leaving the company.

While better for the country’s economy to bring up offspring. It is still not a “good” thing for the company in the short to mid-term.

The question then becomes does society exist for the benefit of commerce? Or does commerce exist to benefit society?

Congratulations on your 500th post! As far as “the money” if a company has the money to pay a male worker, then they have the money to pay a female worker. If they don’t have the money to pay a worker, then they do not hire one. While I feel the benefits afforded to progressive nations like Sweden who provide for compensation of both mothers and fathers to take leave at the birth of a child provide a great benefit to society, in this context, I’m okay with women being paid equally and being subject to FMLA regs should she _choose_ to do so. It’s not right to penalize a person because of things that they have no control, such as their “equipment” for the reasons that I have stated earlier as well as my own personal sense of justice.

LMAO! Finding it hard to believe that there is any question about whether it should be equal pay for the sexes. There should certainly be equal pay. Wasn’t the rational that men provided for their families etc. Take a look around at all the women supporting families. A friend of mine has a shirt that says, I can bleed for 7 days straight and survive, can you? PAY US!! Actually I put a husband through college and most of the women I know make more than their husbands so I think/HOPE times are changing. Just my 50 cents worth. (inflation)😃

I know I was LMAO at this question as well. If a women can do a job just as well as a man of course she should be paid the same. If its a physical labor type job they should start out the same as the men and be evaluated and rewarded on job performance just like the men are. This is fair. This way if the **person** not the gender can not perform the job as well they dont get paid as well.

Women being the child bearers is irrelevant in this day and age. Some women dont want children. Some men take paternity leave. The men in my office get the same amount of time as the women. Men now a days take time off from work for family just as much as the women do. So if they are going to discriminate because your family orientated then both genders should be discriminated against.

I think many men feel threatened by the fact that women can do pretty much everything they can which heads us back into the infamous alpha beta discussion.

You people suck at philosophy. 😉

The answer to this question is “no” women should not be paid equally as men. The reasoning is complex, but first you need to take the question at face value, without making assumptions.
You make a lot of assumptions here on the poor poster that just aren’t fair:

1. The job doesn’t require traits that favor a gender.
2. Whether other non-gender traits can affect pay. (Such as dwarfism, phsycial or mental handicap, etc.)
3. That the woman is making LESS than a man in this philosophical question.

It boils down to in our society, people should be paid based on performance and overall value of the services provided, and the availability of similar services. Gender is irrelevant: paying anyone the same as anyone else just to make it fair is hardly fair at all. No two people will ever be able to do the same exact work. Now if the question was presented a little differently, stating that two people can in fact do the same work equally, then your answers would have more validity.

I’m sure if you asked a 200 lb male factory worker lifting steel if the 90 lb 15 year old girl whether he thinks she should make as much as he does for the same job, he’d say no. In philosophy, you need to give an answer appropriate to the parameters given, and the poster has not given any parameters other than there are 2 genders and should they make the same $$$.

You really have to think about these philosophy questions before you give a blanket answer. Meow, if I were you, I’d come up with the best answer that survives the most “what if” scenarios and go with it.
