Amazing read, thanks!

It’s fascinating that the speech was given in 1978! I wonder if he’s still alive today and how his feelings on the subject are today. Personally, I feel that his words, for the most part, ring truer today than ever before. But, who am I to say? I’ve only really seen a decade or so of human development. 😛

He died the day before yesterday, probably the reason for the original post.☹

So, the essence of his speech seems to be that the Western world faces a lack of spirituality. I don’t disagree with that… my only question would be “what kind of spirituality?” I honestly think spirituality restricted to pre-personal and archetypal ideas is poison, it leads to tribalism and fanaticism. Far from grounding people in a deeper understanding of reality, it seems to seperate people from reality. The suicide bomber might be an example of pre-personal spirituality.

In the interests of brevity, that’s all I’ll say on the matter for now, though 🙂

However, I don’t agree necessarily with his viewpoint on the Vietnam war, at the risk of being political. But perhaps the speech was a product of the times and the person.
