I heard that earlier… Yes a sad day indeed.

Without him the music industry (whether it be rock, pop, hip hop, jazz, etc.) would be a DRASTICALLY different place. The man invented both the electric guitar, and the concept of multi-track recording.

I also felt like posting this, but wasn’t sure if there was a lot of guitarists out there besides SoulCreator, LTDShred, DjAndarial, and I. Sad day indeed.

My first solid body was a '73 wine Les Paul Deluxe with Dimarzio Super Distortion pickups. My grandpa gave it to me as a HS graduation present along with a Gallien Krueger twin. I sold them for a ticket to Hawaii in the late 70s and am still marooned. Even though I’m not wild about the current Les Pauls models his basic design principles live on and have been perfected in PRS and Hammer USA guitars. Thanks Les!

Well, he invented the Les Paul guitar because he wasn’t happy with current electric guitar technology (archtop with floating single coil pickups). The first widely produced commercial electric guitars came from he Rickenbacker in the early 1930s. The first commercial solid bodies came from Fender, I think the Broadcaster, the Tele forerunner, in 1950. Les’ prototype solid body guitars were among the earliest made, dating from the early 1940s. However his design didn’t see production until well after the Fender.

Looks like there are a few on here…

I had a Les Paul Custom once (not an original Gibson, but an Epiphone copy - was a great guitar but the Epiphone pickups sucked) and was quite happy with it. The only things I didn’t like were the heavyness (jamming for hours was killing my back) and the reeeaaalllyyy thick neck. Felt like having a whole tree in hands… 😉 I finally gave it to a friend to finance a nice Ibanez guitar - but yeah, Les Pauls are great guitars!! 🙂

You’re lucky enough to find a copy of a guitar that heavy (with good wood!) Usually it’s all light and meh, like Squires. I still don’t mind Squires though as a beginner guitar. But Epiphone guitars are REALLY nice with great designs.

That is sad news indeed, I hadn’t seen it until today! I guess the prices might be raised some more after this (not to be insensitive). I have always wanted a gibson les paul, but didn’t have the money back when I was playing in small time bars!
Epiphones are not great compared, but I have an epiphone and a washburn (both great mid-end guitars) and I seem to prefer the epiphone’s sound even more.

I’ve compared Epiphone and Gibson Les Pauls in a shop once and didn’t see or feel that much difference. Epiphones might have some more production glitches, but these can often be easily corrected by a good guitar tech. Still, the sound was pretty different - the one from the Epiphone was kinda muddier, less defined. But that’s most likely because of the shitty pickups. Just install some decent DiMarzios or Seymour Duncans, bring it to a good guitar tech for setup and you’ve got yourself a guitar that’s as good as the Gibson for less than half the price… A large portion of the price of an original Gibson Les Paul is just for the name tag… 😉

I was listening to a tribute to Les last night on the BBC, and they mentioned he only ever made one prototype solid body which was rejected by the guitar manufacturers he showed it to. Later Gibson made one and paid him to put his name on it. Les changed Rock and Roll forever and he was a Country and Jazz man. He continued playing later in life even though his right arm was shattered in a car accident and he had to use his other hand to bend his right arm 90 degrees in order to play.

Damn, a guitarists worst nightmare. But anything is possible when you love something just as much as he loved guitars.
