Justin Canha is a 22-year-old artist with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Justin, from Montclair, New Jersey, was diagnosed with Autism at age 3. Justin’s animations, drawings and watercolours have garnered substantial acclaim in outsider art circles. Justin wants to channel his artistic talents and childhood passion for drawing animals and cartoon characters to become a successful artist in the animation industry 🙂…

> …What is it about these paintings that captures the personality … of these plants? Perhaps we can point to the fact that Canha is on the autistic spectrum as a source for his apparent heightened sensitivity to the nature and character of a plant. Or perhaps it is the vibrancy of color and the striking compositions that position these works as something rather different from the usual still life.

> Rendered in charcoal and pastel, Canha’s works are different than what we often associate with self-taught or outsider art. These are works of shear beauty that appeal to the viewer … as evidence of a greater sensitivity to the experience of plants. Here Canha has brought the character of these carnivorous plants to us with the eye of a portraitist. To encounter these works is as if to notice plants for the first time. The experience is startling and beautiful…
