**Specialisterne (Danish for ‘Specialists’) seeks to harness strengths that many people with Autism Spectrum Disorders possess - good attention to fine details, precision, and high tolerance for repetitive tasks. Their consultants bring the joy of work into areas where it is often missing.🙂 As listed in Temple Grandin’s book, _The Way I See It: A Personal Look at Autism & Asperger’s_, one of the things that Specialisterne does not tolerate is anger where equipment is damaged or other people are hit. In return, the consultants are provided with a work environment where sensory distractions are minimized and they do not have to deal with difficult bosses and complex social situations.**

The issues mentioned above may be related - via something called meltdowns which can happen in Autistic people.

Jamie Knight, a 21-year-old front end web developer from the UK, describes the phenomenon:

> …I suppose the biggest way [Autism] affects me would be the sensory and processing. On the sensory side I can get “overloaded” with strong sense input like sounds, touch, and motion. When this happens I find it very difficult to process information and may struggle to talk, or understand things. In extreme cases this can cause a “shutdown” which is basically when my brain turns off from the input and goes into a more protective state where I curl up and need to kinda recover. During these times I find speech very difficult and will often have issues understanding the environment I am in…

Leonora Gregory-Collura has coined the term neuro-physiological interruption – NPI in effort to more accurately describe the internal process many autistic people experience and exhibit when triggered into a state of ‘overload’. Here is a video where a group of autistic teens and young adults discuss their understanding of the process: [AutisticOptions.com ~ Resources for parents, caregivers and autistic adults](http://www.autisticoptions.com/articles.php)
