**Specialisterne (Danish for ‘Specialists’) seeks to harness strengths that many people with Autism Spectrum Disorders possess - good attention to fine details, precision, and high tolerance for repetitive tasks. Their consultants bring the joy of work into areas where it is often missing.🙂 As listed in Temple Grandin’s book, _The Way I See It: A Personal Look at Autism & Asperger’s_, one of the things that Specialisterne does not tolerate is anger where equipment is damaged or other people are hit. In return, the consultants are provided with a work environment where sensory distractions are minimized and they do not have to deal with difficult bosses and complex social situations.**

The issues mentioned above may be related - via something called meltdowns which can happen in people with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Certain supplements may minimise sensory overload issues (which can trigger meltdowns) in certain Autistic individuals. One such supplement, at least for the person(s) that wrote the following, is L-Carnosine:

> Things are different in a specific sort of way thats hard to explain exactly. I seem not to enter an overload/shutdown state as easily as I did in the past, and there is a certain form of obsessive overthinking of situations which has partly vanished (2/3rds?). In the past social phobia would often cause a partial shutdown, which would cause a feedback loop and really throw things off…

I continued to take it. I soon noticed that navigating stores no longer overloaded me, dealing with people was much easier, my stress and anxiety levels where lower, phobic reactions decreased greatly. It was like entering a new life overnight. I am still an Aspie, but many of the unpleasant aspects of the condition have decreased substantially, while the pleasant and useful ones have increased, I still retain my gifts in programming, and the like which come from this condition…

> A clarifying and softening of sensory sensations, expecially hearing. However to my surprise L-Carnosine’s effects are quite noticeably different than those of neurontin or any other drug of that sort, it seems to be in a class by itself. And seems to be a precision screw driver applied gently right in the right place as opposed to a crowbar jammed into the brain…

Another supplement that may help reduce the impact of meltdowns in certain Autistic individuals is Fish Oil (via its Omega 3 Fatty Acids). Rather than simply lowering sensory overload issues, it may improve an Autistic person’s control of his own behaviour and responses to any transgressions, even if they are involuntary meltdowns. Below is a small excerpt from a news story on an Autistic boy, whose behaviour improved dramatically after starting Fish Oil supplementation:

> …"The first thing people say to me now, is ‘isn’t he a happy boy’? He never had empathy, but now if he hits out he will turn around and say ‘I didn’t want to do that mummy, I’m sorry’.
> “It’s as if he was at last at peace with himself.”…
