I am thinking about getting a tattoo, something I have thought on and off about for years. Nothing big. Just a small heart with some scrolling on the base of my spine. But my question is what do you think about a woman with a tattoo when you find out she has one? Just curious. I have had mixed answers from my friends but hubby is all for it.

Hey KathyG! I have thought about getting a tattoo myself. But choosing a body part has been difficult for me. Just wondering, what made you choose the base of your spine? If I choose one I will place it in a location where I can see it as well without using a mirror.😕

I have a tattoo on my inside right ankle. It is a rose, a broken rose and I LOVE IT! I’ve had it 8 years and I still love it!

That sounds great! I will have to take a look to comment further. 😉 Well but again why did you choose that location and why a broken rose? What does that signify?

I picked the small of my back because I cannot think of anywhere else. I wear a uniform at work and we aren’t allowed to have them showing. I picked a heart (used to not care for them) because when my husband and I were dating we were in a dept store using the restroom and they are always located near the china and lamps for some reason. It was near Valentines Day. I was waiting for him and when he came out started looking at the china with me. I said I dont like alot of flowery stuff especially in jewlery and then stuck my foot in it by saying "and for God sake don’t every buy me anything heart shaped. OOPS!!! It was already bought and paid for. I wore the ring for years and still wear it on occasion.

I’ve noticed many women have tattoos at spine base. Seems common. Small ones are usually okay with me, but that’s a personal opinion.

Of course one of my fave female targets has about 6 of them… but I look beyond them and at who she is now, not back when she got them. The way she was then is not the same as the way she is now.

Personally I have no desire to get branded.

OOPS indeed! Lower back, shoulder, ankle seems to be the favorites with women. I have always wondered why? “…because I cannot think of anywhere else…”. You just pointed out one of the reasons!😃

To be honest, because I just liked it. I suppose I could get all sentimental but basically, it was the cover of my favorite album by my favorite group..Depeche Mode!

I personally don’t care for tattoos. I normally wouldn’t comment on them but you asked. I think they make women look trashy and for a while porn stars seemed to all have a tattoo on the small of their back. Once again this is only my opinion and only because you asked. No offense meant.

I have a tattoo on my upper back that I got when I was 18. It’s a very nice piece of Celtic knotwork (my family is Sicilian and Irish). However… I would **not recommend** **getting tattooed** unless you’re 100% certain that you want it and that you’ll love it forever, and you don’t care if you can’t attend formal events without it hanging out. I started to have mine lasered off but not only is it expensive, you have to keep going back multiple times. I only had enough for one visit before I moved to the bush.

It sucks because what am I going to do when I get married? Most bridal gowns and formal gowns are strapless, and my tattoo is very visible in those situations. You can’t cover a tattoo with Dermablend if the makeup is touching your white gown. ☹ The alternative is to get a dowdy Victorianesque gown that covers everything up, but I get overheated very easily! I don’t want to be all overheated and grumpy on my wedding day. Some women like Angelina Jolie can look nice in a formal gown with her tattoos hanging out…but on most women I think it looks, well, trashy.

I also don’t know about your job. I’ve seen women in pantyhose and formal work outfits with tattooed ankles, legs, or feet and I do not think it looks professional at all.

And I’ve heard people refer to the right-above-the-a\*\* tattoo as a “tramp stamp” in college. I personally do not like that look very much.

Actually my friends call them “Ho stamps.” Same basic concept, I guess. An unfair assessment to be sure, but old men with white beards are called Santa Claus too … what can you do? 🙄

I have always wondered about that term but don’t know it’s origin. Why should that be called “tramp stamp” while tattoos everywhere else don’t have such interesting monikers? Is it because they are thought to be trying to draw attention to the ass (sexual) area, hmmm… I wonder?🙄

A guy that I know got a tattoo across the back of his hips, and some people that I know teased him mercilessly about it…_warning this is really crude_. Some people said that women in pr0n flicks have it there to give the guys somewhere to, ah, spray it? So they were mocking him for getting a tattoo in a “feminine” spot…and the worst thing for an insecure straight guy is to be told that he must have gotten that tattoo for his boyfriend.

That’s why they call it a tramp stamp. Tramp = slang term for prostitute.

I wanted a tattoo for a long time growing up, but could not think of what I wanted nor where I wanted it. After I figured out where (left shoulderblade) it took me another year or so to figure out what. I chose something seminal to me, something I know would define me for the rest of my life. I use it as a symbol for myself when I think I am losing my way in life and I need to be reminded where I should be going. I would suggest that you not get a tattoo unless it is very important to you and you believe it will still be so for the rest of your life as well. As to location, that’s up to you. Although I would think what the tattoo actually is would have some bearing on good body locations for it.

When I decided to get tatooed, I knew what I wanted and till this day I still love it. It is not big, i think it is very feminine and I don’t cover it up..ever! I do not regret mine, but I do know people who regret theirs for various reasons. If you really are considering a tat, I suggest that just like th3shold, you think long and hard about what you want, where to put it, etc

Ho (a corruption of the word whore) = another slang term for prostitute.
pr0n = a difficult way of spelling porn. 🙂

Hmmm my friends that use the term ho stamp said that a tattoo tells them what their classmates would allow in the bedroom. If she was willing to put a tattoo on her body then she would allow you to do pretty much anything else with her body also. That was their reason FWIW. No real exposure to pr0n flicks.

But it brings up an interesting question: are people in pr0n - by definition - prostitutes?

Great answer. I have three tattoos and like thr3shold, they are markers in my life and i often reflect back on them for they remind me who i was, what i was doing, what i was thinking, who i was with at the time.

Above my left breast, sort of over my heart, I have a small cartouche with the name of an Egyptian diety. At the time, I was very into egyptology and hanging out with a bloke who taught me a lot about it. This particular diety also represents the sun, and my particular cultural/ethnic heritage has a lot of solar worship/iconography in it so it seemed to fit. In retrospect, it is probably the favorite of my three tattoos in part because it is _ **discrete, unique, and unobtrusive** _ (note emphasis).

My second tattoo is a yin/yang symbol about 2" in diameter on upper back, sort of above my topmost thoracic vertebrae. I was studying a korean martial art at the time, reading a lot of taoism (which has always appealed to me) and generally “into” a lot of eastern philosophy and culture at the time and it seemed relevant. Also, I wanted to mark myself with the love I have of these subjects. To this day, I am fine with this particular tattoo. I only really notice it when i have on a tshirt that gapes enough at the back of the neck, something backless, etc. It’s not always concealed by clothing but it is most of the time.

Then I went and got a third. It is on my left forearm and covers almost my entire inside forearm. It is Kali, the vedic goddess, who represents, amongst other things “death” (figurative transformational death) and is also the female principle of creation. Together with Shiva, these two dieties are the creators in Vedic cosmology. The birth-giver (Shiva, who creates from his mind) and the destroyer (Kali, from whose void new life comes). This tattoo I got because I was now studying lots of yoga and also because the dualities of birth/dirth, creation/destruction were something that, at this time of my life, I was experiencing a great deal of. A lot of personal difficulty or “death” that was leading to rebirth, to a “new” me. Psychological/spiritual rebirth. Not fun and definitely painful at times LOL Anyway, the tattoo is large, colorful, intricate, and gets a lot of questions, attention, looks, etc. _ **This is not always welcome** _ (note emphasis LOL)

Anyway, it is this third tattoo that I occasionally regret, but I can not let myself dwell in that too much because I know removing it would be difficult. I have to make peace with it, but I realize NOW that I have come full circle and have passed through these lessons, these three stages of my life, and gone from a place where I would never imagine myself bemoaning a “marring” of my skin or image, that I will not be able to wear slinky feminine gowns nor a bridal gown without at least 2 of my tattoos showing, nor risk being viewed a certain way in business or social settings should others see my tattoos (especially the large one).

Like I said, I’m at peace with it BUT I also realize how it may affect others and the potential consequences of it. That is a very long story, but my experience with my tattoos, which (get this) is FOREVER. (even removal will not, with larger tattoos, remove ALL traces of pigment and sometimes the scarring looks worse than the tattoo you’re trying to cover).

Proceed with caution but be at peace with whatever you decide. And good luck! And…I have to interject this, please think of something with real meaning to you. There are too many people running around with carbon copy tattoos of something that really, holds little meaning to them except “well I wanted to get a tattoo.” I would imagine that would be an easy decision to regret, and personally, I dont’ like being one of many.

🙂
