The Species that Plays Games

There’s an argument that what distinguishes the human species as mammals is not our use of tools (_homo faber_) nor our socialization of knowledge (_homo sapiens_) nor our ability to understand and make comedy (_homo ridens_) but our innate capacity to elevate pure play to the status of a game (_ **homo ludens** _).

It is one thing to view an activity or event **as if** it were a game (game metaphor) and another thing entirely to enter into an activity **as a player** in a game (game initiate).

When we use the game metaphor as an analytical framework, we are in a **reductive** mode. But any time we analyse anything, we’re creating an artificial model that simplifies reality; the alternative is to contemplate our navels **holistically** and to keep the scalpel of analysis in its sheath. Noticing that some activity has game-like characteristics is **smart** – it’s an important intellectual tool and distinctively human, as human as having a sense of humor.

It’s the objective, reductive aspect of “game” metaphor thinking that I sense some people object to – thinking about and talking about interactions with others in this way can be seen to dehumanize and objectify: “targets” and “tactics” instead of the reverence for, and mysterious appreciation of the human dynamic.

But games are not necessarily trivial.

Games can be sacred, and someone who enters into the play as an initiate can be 100% themselves, authentic and honest, but now MORE than the person who they are when they are not engaged in the game of their choice. When Ted Williams entered into the batter’s box he might as well have donned the sacred trappings of a shaman or priest; just as when he entered into the cockpit of his fighter as a Marine Corps pilot. Playing baseball didn’t make him LESS Ted Williams, it opened a door to a sacred place for him. Playing with paint did not make Picasso less himself … and so on.

* * *

Let’s imagine that the doctors and nurses in an hospital ER decide, one Friday night when there is a full moon, to “play” their job of treating incoming patients as a game. Doing so could bring new energy and enthusiasm to each of them as individuals. It could evoke an awareness of how “the arena” supports treating patients well or inhibits excellent patient care delivery. It could open lines of social support among the ER team when they celebrate each “win” or “home run” when a patient gets outstanding care and is sent home.

But – it could also demean the patients and interfere with the mission of the ER if a doctor, for example, decided to “walk” a patient (instead of giving them the care due) in order to get to the next, more promising (higher score) patient. Keeping score, and then making the score more important than the reality of patient care would be a completely objectionable outcome. Betting on diagnoses and caring more about winning the bet than treating the patient (with respect and dignity) would strike us as completely corrupt.

But I suggest to you that it’s not looking at this activity as a game, nor is it entering into the activity as a player of a game that we object to: it’s the failure to give due respect to the totality of the human experience as an element of the game that sets off alarms.

I submit that it is the attitude “_It’s just a game_” that really evokes our scary/creepy reaction.

At the risk of hopelessly simplifying the situation, PUA/game technique seems to be another branch of the vast tree of human knowledge. Practically everything we do can be systematized: how we work, how we eat, our sleep/wake cycles, how we initiated/maintain friendships, how we celebrate holidays, how we shop for a car, etc.

If there are ways to improve your technique in dating/sex, why wouldn’t someone want to do this? Multimedia professionals are constantly learning new software and production techniques to keep up with the standard, be more valuable, be more desireable to a potential employer. I think the same thing can be said of dating, mating, friendships, parenthood, anything where you seek a result and there are methods for achieving said result.

Agreed with MarkL that it is the failure to respect the totality of human experience (and capabilities…almost like a shark in a pool of guppies, there is a certain question of fairness and if you have more skill, you should not take advantage of the guppies) that sets off alarms.

Hey guys,

Going back to my original intent of this post and the one question Lor alluded to: If anyone is similiar with attracting or being in the world of a certain type of woman please do post. I think the information and insight into what kind of girls are into what will be very helpful

i.e. does [Instant Shine](https://a314.com/product/shine/) attract a certain type of girl that talks to you more than others?

hmm..i’m kind of insulted by the superficialy of these archetypes.

i was looking for good stuff - and i got tv stereotypes. sorry to be so blunt, but…well you know.

and taoistbiker - interesting breakdown on keeping tension. but imo, that’s more of a unisex approach, and not so much gender specific. I use it alot.

> So I urge you guys to explore and play out other possibilities in life. There’s always something new to learn. There is a big difference between deception and adaptation. Deception fires back at you when revealed, adaptation evolves. Regarding adaptation, respect and commitment to learn about a part of life/society to share physical intimacy with different types of women, I make no apologies.

You hit it here, AlphaW. I’m glad you know the difference, and more importantly, can live out and learn from the difference between adaptation and deception. When you can LIVE the persona, that’s when you know you are a rockstar. 😛🙂🙂

I think we are missing an archetype.

The basket case
celebrity analogy: Ally Sheedy in the breakfast club
Why we like her: Off the wall personality. A true individual. Desire to find out what is behind the barrier.
How to attract her: Break down the walls then you have to truely “get” her. After you acomplish this feat, treat her like she’s a princess.

Hey guys,

Have been busy for a while. [Instant Shine](https://a314.com/product/shine/) is pretty cool for opens. Someone should do an archetype profile from a female perspective for guys. That would be very interesting to read.

Every woman has something that is attractive about her. The sooner you realize that, the sooner you will gravitate toward an archetype of your own.

Because you’re Asian? Are you kidding? Do you know how many of my PUA friends dig Asian girls. They will trade me a HB8 girl of any other race for an Asian girl because they are intrigued by the culture and unique look of an Asian woman.

I’m adding a new archetype

Mysterious ane elusive Asian girl
Celebrity Analog: Zhang Zhi Yi
Why we like her: She’s mysterious and desirable at the same time, her physical beauty coupled with her deep cultural history compells us to find out more about her. Tread lightly, though as most Asian girls, due to cultural reasons are potentially sensitive to over displays of affection (at least in public) and what her peers think about her even if she’s attracted to you.

Just because she’s asian doesn’t mean she fits how others define the ‘shy outside’ asian type personality…I think thats where she was getting at. A person’s race should never be their defining characteristic (although it can have a lot to do with it). Its always funny to see how people tend to stereotype other ethnicities (Asian people do it too), even when they try to be open minded.

I know quite a lot of strong-minded, highly extroverted type Asian women… and men for that matter… who don’t fit that type of profile at all. This is particularly true with more westernized types who were born here and raised under western influences.

Also, most Asian celebrities horribly represent true Asian American culture…rather they seem to accentuate…or maybe even perpetuate perceived Asian stereotypes. They are popular and accepted Asian celebrities only because they fit into that stereotype of how the mass media views Asian people. There are a number of actors/actresses and films and television shows that really portray a true sense of Asian-American culture…however, none have ever had much success, although many of them are quite good!

Anyway this is way off topic, but I just felt like making the point

Great thread either way

This brings up an idea I had. On [slashdot.org](http://slashdot.org) they have slashdot meetups where members get together and talk about whatever. I wonder if people here would be down for that? An annual meetup in a few major cities. We could bombard each other with our own custom mixes.

Nice. We do this a lot in the pu world. It is great to meet face to face and see someone ‘in field’. Occasionally you meet wierd people but most of the time, the shared interest overshadows any differences in character.

You learn a lot that way. Thalion where are you in California?

When I think of archetypes, I think of the identities or ideals that people may associate with. For women, this might be identities like “Career Woman”, “Free Spirit”, “Nurturer”, “Librarian/Academic”, etc. As these identities and roles shift for the individual, so might the sensitivity to certain phero signatures shift as these roles may be mood related.

Maybe a multi-dimensional aspect comes to the front in which a woman who can embody different archetypes could be shifted between them by pheromones.

Does shifting the phero signature shift the archetype, or is the opposite the case?

(How did my view of the universe get so malleable? 🙂 )

Any thoughts along these lines?

Lucy Liu i think has had some success. But i think her subtle sarcastic viewpoint, and flipping of those stereotypes probably gets lost on a lot of people.
