Anyone with half a brain understands that laws are made to be broken. Thats why laws are made because there are people who intend to do the things prohibited by those laws. Therefore in reality laws arent made to stop certain activities but laws are made to reduce the frequency of those activities.

Nationwide ban of guns WILL NOT completely stop criminals from possessing guns. But it WILL greatly reduce overall gun-related crimes.

By the way, no offense to ‘gun lovers’ but for those of you who like spending your time hunting animals, cant you just find a less barbaric hobby? LOLZ

Yes you know what Mark is talking about - he is taking a point to the extreme in order to make a point. “A Modest Proposal” …

Again - as Steve pointed out we pride ourselves here on this forum to be able to discuss and disagree on things we may feel passionately about with sliding into the realm of the insulting.

> [@jankren](#):

> Are you implying things will be better if drugs are made legal?

You know I am pointing out that anything people want that is illegal will either be domestically produced or imported. And you know alcohol during Prohibiton and illegal drugs currently flow freely across the border. If law enforcement admits tons (literally) of drugs make it through then how many handguns would “tons” equate to?

If you don’t like those examples then use illegal immigrants as an example. If we can’t stop millions of illegal people from crossing the border how would you stop small handguns? If every illegal immigrant who came into this country were a handgun, how many would that be in the hands of criminals?

But all this still does not change the fact that gun ownership is constitutionally protected.

I guess I have half a brain. I thought laws are made to obeyed and to stop the activity. Period. That is why they are laws. And why you go to jail if you break them. Sometimes for a long time. Not because we want people to cut down on the number of rapes they commit. But because we do not want them to do it at all.

I do not believe that it would not come anywhere close to completely. In fact a nationwide ban on guns would only completely stop honest people from owning guns. It might reduce gun related crimes somewhat but it will not be greatly as they would just flow in freely from elsewhere.

But again that point is moot as the framers of our Constitution included gun ownership in the document.

Have I found the cruise of a lifetime for you :

I found a Somali cruise package that departs from Sawakin (in the Sudan) and docks at Bagamoya (in Tanzania). The cost is a bit high @ US$800 per daydouble occupancy but I didn’t find that offensive.
What I found enticing is that the cruise company is encouraging people to bring their ‘High powered weapons’ along on the cruise. If you don’t have weapons you can rent them right there on the boat. They claim to have a master gunsmith on board and will have reloading parties every afternoon. The cruise lasts from 4-8 days and nights and costs a maximum of $3200 per person double occupancy (4 days).
All the boat does is sail up and down the coast of Somalia waiting to get hijacked by pirates. Here are some of the costs and claims associated with the package.

$800.00 US/per day double occupancy (4 day max billing)

M-16 full auto rental $ 25.00/day ammo at 100 rounds of 5.56 armor piercing ammo at 15.95

Ak-47 riffle @ No charge. ammo at 100 rounds of 7.62 com block ball ammo at 14.95

Barrett M-107 .50 cal sniper rifle rental 55.00/day ammo at 25 rounds 50 cal armor piercing at 9.95

Crew members can double as spotters for 30.00 per hour (spotting scope included).

They even offer RPG’s at 75 bucks and 200 dollars for 3 standard loads

“Everyone gets use of free complimentary night vision equipment and coffee and snacks on the top deck from 7pm-6am.”

Meals are not included but seem reasonable.

Most cruises offer a mini-bar… these gung ho entrepreneurs offer… get this…

“MOUNTED MINIGUN AVAILABLE @ 450.00 per 30 seconds of sustained fire”

Sign me up!

They advertise group rates and corporate discounts…and even claim “FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY”

They even offer partial money back if not satisfied…here’s some text from the ad.

“We guarantee that you will experience at least two hijacking attempts by pirates or we will refund back half your money including gun rental charges and any unused ammo (mini gun charges not included)… How can we guarantee you will experience a hijacking? We operate at 5 knots within 12 miles of the coast of Somalia. If an attempted Hijacking does not occur we will turn the boat around and cruise by at 4 knots. We will repeat this for up to 8 days making three passes a day along the entire length of Somalia. At night the boat is fully lit and bottle rockets are shot off at intervals and loud disco music beamed shore side to attract attention. Cabin space is limited so respond quickly. Reserve your package before Feb 29 and get 100 rounds of free tracer ammo in the caliber of your choice.”

As if all that isn’t enough to whet your appetite, there were a few testimonials

"I got three confirmed kills on my last trip. I’ll never hunt big game in Africa again. ---- Lars, Hamburg Germany

“Six attacks in 4 days was more than I expected. I bagged three pirates and my 12 yr old son sank two rowboats with the minigun. PIRATES 0 -PASSENGERS-32! Well worth the trip. Just make sure your spotter speaks English” ----Ned, Salt Lake city, Utah USA

“I haven’t had this much fun since flying choppers in NAM. Don’t worry about getting shot by pirates as they never even got close to the ship with those weapons they use and their shitty aim–reminds me of a drunken ‘juicer’ door gunner we picked up from the motor pool back in Nam” ----"chopper’ Dan, Toledo USA.

He was the one insulting me with his demeaning argument. Xev already presented the same question except in more civilized way and I did try to clarify my argument further. I wasnt talking about idiotic genetic bullcrap. I was merely saying during tough times if there was two persons one with a gun and one without a gun anyone with 1/4 of a brain should know that which one may potentially possess far more dangerous threat to society.

I lived half of my life in a country with a very strict nationwide gun control and all the things you said didnt happen.

I guess gun control debate is like religious debate. A Christian wont accept Islam is the truth while a Muslim wont accept that Christianity is the truth.

Yeah it’s you!

And laws were made to be broken? What school are you from? Laws are made to be obeyed, and that’s why there are consequences for not following them!

Yes, I am implying that if drugs were made legal, well actually I’d prefer to see them decriminalized (hope that’s not to big a word for you), then crime would go down, drug related deaths would drop, and usage would go way down.

In effect, decriminalizing drugs would put gangs and cartels out of business, as there wouldn’t be much profit in selling something that you could buy at the corner pharmacy.

And if cocaine sold for $4.00 an ounce, as it did before being classified and regulated by the FDA, and adjusted for inflation of course, there wouldn’t be much reason for cutting it with glass, tide, amphetamines or anything else and overdoses would drop way down.

Lastly, at what age to people usually start using drugs and for what reason? In their teens, for the thrill of doing something wrong and to rebel. If they were legal, the reasons for starting woudn’t exist.

How was my statement insulting, especially when compared to you calling those that reject the idea of gun control laws gun freaks?

If you are religious and can actually put your feelings aside for a moment, you’d see that those religions, and most others are really not all that far apart. The players and profits are pretty much the same, it’s just the saviors or interpretations that differ.

And yet the bloodiest wars ever fought have been over religion.

Now, if you feel that I insulted you, then I suggest you step back and read your past posts and consider your statements about other peoples beliefs! Steve is pretty damn docile and does not step in often and demand that members refrain from insulting others, yet he had to do so over your initial posts!

EDIT: Just so everyone knows, for only about the third time in 1 1/2 years i negged a member here, and that was jankren because of his cocky statements and feeling that he can insult those that he disagrees with, but his word is gospel and anybody that disagrees with him is being demeaning. Anybody that wants to neg me for doing so, have at it.

And, the 1/2 and 1/4 brain garbage he spews just really started grating on me.

What I meant was its expected that there will be people who attempt to break the law no matter what. Meaning with the creation of law its naive to expect it to stop an activity completely.

Yea yea, keep on making assumptions. If we did this it would be that. If we did that it would be this.

People used to say that if prostitution was legal then human trafficking would decrease but a study I saw a while ago for example showed that human trafficking into the Netherlands didnt decrease even after prostitution was legalized there.

Please show real life examples of your arguments into the discussion then we can take it from there.

> Hey Bob, I think you are right, most gun owning Americans probably don’t own guns for reasons of shooting clays, or hunting, or even personal protection. I personally despise that we often fall to giving those reasons to excuse ourselves.
>
> I think when it comes down to the personal level most of us own guns for the identity that owning them brings us. Many of us were taught gun ownership by our parents and they from their parents. For many more of us the right to own a gun was something we earned when we earned our citizenship. We came from places where guns were owned by the privileged and few. It is a thing of pride among both groups to be numbered among “those gun toting Americans”.
>
> It is a touchable symbol of what being an American is all about. The idea that we are born with the right to own and defend property. The idea that no one can stop us from exercising our rights of assembly, of expression, of voting.
>
> Yes, the idea that we can band together and overthrow an oppressor like our founders did in 1776 is dated to the point of absurdity. It is, however, a powerful way of identifying with our founders. We feel if we lose that identity, we will lose the other things that bind us together. After all, we are not a nation of heritage, or place, or language. The USA is a nation based on the idea of a constitution held in common by a populace that declared themselves into being. The Bill of Rights is our constitutional coding of the Declaration of Independence. We defend gun ownership because in doing so we defend our decision to exist as a nation.

See, it seems that this is indeed a cultural thing. Having a fire weapon at home seems to be something normal in the U. S., in some states it may even be normal to carry them around. You’ve already grown up with weapons around and therefore completely got used to them.
In my region of the world it’s completely different. It’s something very unusual to have fire weapons at home, and someone carrying one around openly would have quite a hard time dealing with the police. As I stated before I never came in contact with anyone owning a weapon.
So of course I’ve got a completely different view on this than a lot of U.S. americans, and it’s hard for someone with my background to understand that a weapon can be some part of the identity of you.
Someone in this thread stated that people like me don’t know what they loose if they don’t insist on their right to owning fireweapons. But, if I don’t feel I’m loosing anything when not owning one, I have a hard time believing that this will actually supress my freedom.

Thanks for a very insightful answer btw!

> [@xev](#):
>
> You seem to be implying that when times are tough, a person who owns a gun (or is it gun rights activist) is going to be more likely to turn to violence or other type of bad behavior than someone who doesn’t have a gun.

Well, I’m positive that someone owning a gun will have lower inhibitions to use it in some cases than someone only equipped with a knife or something. And that is because someone with a gun can kill from a distance and is therefore much less likely to be harmed himself. When you attack someone with knife, he is still able to defend himself (well, not in all cases of course), when attacked with a gun he’s not. Also, killing from a distance provides a certain kind of anonymity, not only a physical distance but a psychological distance, too. So yeah, I believe if someone is inclined to kill someone else, he’s more likely to do it when owning a gun.

Wow, I strongly disagree with you. We have the fundamental right to bear arms. It is written in our constitution. We have the right to protect ourselves from bad people, and not wait around for the government to step in and do it.

What this has to do with Hitler, is the same it has to do with any government that wants to step in and take away your fundamental rights, all in the name of doing what is best for you. Hitler, Stalin, any government leader that snows you into thinking they can and will protect you while imprisoning you in more and more and more legislation is the same.

Which one of our founding fathers said, (paraphrasing) “Those who sacrifice a small amount of liberty for a small amount of safety deserve neither.” Oh, yeah, it was Benjamin Franklin.

Just want to pop in here and state that a correlation in no way shows cause and effect. It is just as plausible that the gun rate is so high because the need for self-protection in the populace is so high. Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

Evil men flourish when good men do nothing. Let’s all just hug and everything will be fine. I hate to bust your bubble, but there are a lot of very selfish, very evil people in the world, including here in the US \<gasp!\>.

Walk down any city street and you’ll see a dozen crack-heads, whose suppliers usually are pretty violent and carry (and use) guns. Not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to live in upscale, secure neighborhoods… Some people have to live in neighborhoods the police will not go into. I’m not making this up, btw. At one point in my life I was a single mother with two small children, forced to live in a neighborhood, where every week saw another crack house being set up. No, this wasn’t a slum, it was a formerly nice neighborhood, about 10 miles from city center. Put yourself in a truly vulnerable position with crime and violence all around you, and then check and see if you want your ability to protect yourself to be curtailed. I want to witness you going to all your new neighbors while you talk to them about gun restriction. They will laugh their asses off at your naivete.

Responsible gun ownership won’t prevent crimes, but it does increase your and your families chances of survival, if you should happen to be unfortunate enough to need it.

Yup good ole southern hospitality of Memphis where 98% of gun crime is committed with illegal guns. They are not registered, not obtained in any way that’s legal and its the second most dangerous place in the US. It is very difficult for anyone in Memphis to have a gun legally.

However in the next county over (where I live) having a gun permit is pretty easy, having a carriers permit is a bit harder but not impossible. Most cities with major crime statistics like Memphis spill over into adjoining counties. Guess what? Where I live is one of the fastest growing counties in the US with a extremely low crime rate. Last people who came in from Memphis tried to rape and rob two sisters at home.

Thank God they had a gun to defend off the scum and killed 2 of 3 and the third, well he is paralyzed and in prison. Thank God they were able to not be victims to horrible crime.

Bubble the example was to prove that even in your little country in the world (Germany), there are crazy people willing to commit crimes with whatever weapons are available.

Guns do not kill people, they are inanimate tools, People kill people, they have the ability of thought and to make action.

I have little to no tolerance for people who have never held a firearm and wish them banned, I have little tolerance for people who have never had the privilege of hunting and enjoying the sport. Or eating your kill that we waste nothing of, to provide food for the family table.

I am a Texan hunter, our family owns thousands of acres of land, we practice good land management as well as year round feeding for growth.

I consider it a insult to my principals when someone outright says firearms should be banned… because the children can get hurt (don’t leave it loaded idiot), or that someone will use it in a violent crime (If they had the inclination to inflict harm on another human, they would have done so with or without a firearm).

Gun control in America is getting out of hand, we need to put a stop to the Democrats trying to do this.

Obama’s administration the joke that it is, is going to make it illegal to posess ANY ammunition that does not have a serial number, the price of ammunition is about to skyrcket to as much as $60-80/box.

Understand this IS coming.

Careful Dj! 😃 Last time I looked Germany was bigger than Texas. 😃

I think Bob may have felt that between the title of the thread and some of the examples given, Germany was catching some undeserved flack.

I think we Americans sometimes mistake the genuine curiosity of Europeans for snobbery because of mere errors of language and translation.

This is the internet after all. We can’t see each others smiles or frowns. Besides I think I had a German great grandma from Texas. 😃

I like this quote from Atlas Shrugged" “There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who want a nation of law-abiding citizens? What’s there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced nor objectively interpreted - and you create a nation of law-breakers - and then you cash in on guilt.”

BTW The bloodiest wars were in late 19th and 20th century. The Civil War, WWI and WWII. They weren’t about religion. Religion caused many wars and deaths but the myth that it caused the most is simply an atheistic attack on religion. I’m not saying anyone here is attacking religion, just clarifying a common myth.🙂

To ensure the title is not insinuating anything against Germany (I lived there for several years and LOVED it) I have changed it.

It was not my intention to insinuate anything, but as previously stated I simply cut and paste from an email I received. I did think it was tacky and if I offended anyone with it I apologize.

Like I said I lived in Germany and LOVED it. A refreshingly awesome place with old world charm and downright great people. I look forward to the day I get back there and can enjoy some Schnitzel and Beer.

Gotcha Renny, but I am not comparing the size of Germany to Texas, our state has a unique shape LOL

I am commenting on how the social barriers and the mis-understanding on how a country like Germany who has been Socially repressed on gun ownership and how that relates to Texas.

Texas being a state who was once a independent country, and who has had 6 different flags fly over it’s soil.

We Texans are a proud people, and we do not like to be silenced nor limited in our sense of freedom. Perhaps it is the masonic principals of our founders of our state, original congress and house of representatives.
