I grew up eating kim-chi 3 times daily! It’s actually addictive. The real deal tastes much better than the fake stuff sold in supermarkets and Korean restaurants catering to Westerners.

People don’t always percieve the smells the same.

=) heh I received a negative rep for my theory opposing match-making in accordance to genetic make-up. 😛 It’s all good and all, since they’re only reps and a good reminder that not everyone’s going to agree with what I theorize. Whoever neg repped, if you could PM me and discuss the points about my fruitless observation, it would be doing me a favor by educating me on the matter and bringing in a fresh outlook on what you don’t agree with. It would also be more appreciated if you could sign your neg rep next time also.

That’s kind of low. Usually I’ll neg a person for being an ass, not because I disagree with a debatable point. That would be like me negging Daedelus because he and I have different political views.

> Umm… opposites don’t attract. That’s just a piece of “common wisdom” that has never been peer-reviewed in an academic journal 🙂 In reality, people always tend to look for common elements with themselves when they are attracted to something, or someone.

I was just giving an example of a ‘mindset’ that’s involved in higher corticol thinking, that factors into creating chemistry but has nothing to do with genetic make-up. However, I do agree that in most cases opposites don’t attract, BUT psychologically in instances that they do attract is when the spouse or mating partner has massive similarities to our parent. For example; one of man’s attraction factors is that a woman be like his mother in some way, and the same goes for a girl and her father. It’s just how our minds work, so if a guy holds no common interests with a potential parter, BUT she’s similar to his mother (through characteristics or values etc), then in that case he would still find subconscious attraction for the potential partner. So in this case, opposites do attract. But I do agree, we don’t tend to look for differences rather than common interests, but in some cases (like the above example), its not out of the ordinary to be attracted to an ‘opposite’. But obviously there’s exceptions to every rule.

I’ve been negged many times for expressing an opinion–anyways anonymously too. The internet is full of spineless cowards.

I’ve actually got a different take on that… I think we are attracted to people that are similar to our parents or ourselves even, but without the flaws. It’s probably hard to find real people like that, though, once expectations wear off perhaps people aren’t happy anymore. Familiarity does sometimes breed contempt.

Sure, being consciously aware, no one _wants_ the flaws. But subconsciously we’re drawn to them any way. Especially since certain flaws are always paired with certain characteristics. A common example you may see is _that one girl_ whose dad beat both her and her mother as a child, and she swears she’ll never marry anyone like him. Yet, somehow all the guys she ends up dating long-term are the abusive ones.

This isn’t a strong example at all though, since there’s never been a case-study done, and there could be many reasons why she’s always put in that position. She might have deeper rooted problems with her own psyche and tends to want to be put in some vulnerable position, or it could just be coincidence. Who knows? But yeah I do agree that we make conscious decisions to avoid the flaws, but for most people familiarity to an opposite gendered parent does lead to being drawn into the flaw any way 😉 (but not consciously). However, how we actually act on these attractions are individualized decisions, and vary from person to person.
